Ad Rock

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

MCA's got one of the coolest voices of anyone making records then or now. I love that he usually stays in the background and is only deployed for maximum impact at just the right times.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

John Berry wuz robbed. I mean if you're going to include Kate Schellenbach.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

oops, sorry John Berry

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

I am voting adrock and I really can't imagine how anybody could vote anything else.

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

MCA, for reasons given above by Johnny Fever.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

Mike D, for reasons not given by Alex in NYC

xhuxk, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

I just find Mike to be the wittiest and -- dare I say it -- funkiest of the three.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

mike d's verses are just big commercials IMO

rap telekenisis or some equally retarded nerd shit (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

and he's a good drummer.

xp

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

Also Mike D, but based on this I may change my vote to Mixmaster Mike.

Mario Brosephs (Pancakes Hackman), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

I just find Mike to be the wittiest and -- dare I say it -- funkiest of the three.

Mike always had the least rhythm (in re rapping) of the three, and has become MUCH worse as he's gotten older

Young Scott Young (sic), Thursday, 10 September 2009 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know, the most rhythmically clunky delivery i can remember in b-boys song is MCA on Ch-Check It Out, i.e.:

Blowin' doors off hinges
I'll grab you with the pinchers
And no i didn't retire
I'll snatch you up
With the needle nose pliers

amarillo fat (jim), Thursday, 10 September 2009 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

He don't need rhythm; he's Country Mike!

xp

myndbloom, Thursday, 10 September 2009 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

I might vote Mike D cause he seems the least concerned with sounding cool of the three; he exists in his own little world

we like cars, we like cartoons (dyao), Thursday, 10 September 2009 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

ps reason for choosing MCA: a year and a day
reason #2: all the groaning-monk funk on Ill Comms

rich, velvety condescension (stevie), Thursday, 10 September 2009 08:06 (fifteen years ago)

^ kept resisting saying MCA deserved it just for A Year And A Day until I thought of some other reasons.

Mike certainly loses out if you start ranking them on the basis of side-projects:
MCA did the Drum Machine re-versioning with Burzootie
Adrock did the amazing first BS2000 album and Spam
Mike D played brushes on a Ben Lee album track

(BTW stevie we were on the Beastie mailing list together back in 97 or so)

Young Scott Young (sic), Thursday, 10 September 2009 10:44 (fifteen years ago)

ha! omg... i was regularly trolled there bitd.

rich, velvety condescension (stevie), Thursday, 10 September 2009 10:45 (fifteen years ago)

Adrock also did Dead Fucking Last.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 10 September 2009 11:18 (fifteen years ago)

Is David Lee Roth wearing a Kappa tracksuit top in that picture?

vain_bowers, Thursday, 10 September 2009 11:20 (fifteen years ago)

We were listening to Ill Communication last night after a bad day at work and boy did it help but the spring back into my step.

Voted MCA - get well soon buddy!

ch4rlie fr4m3, Thursday, 10 September 2009 11:23 (fifteen years ago)

polling members of a group when one of them has recently fallen ill is probably not a great idea

some dude, Thursday, 10 September 2009 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

Aw, that bums me out. I just posted it because they were on my mind with the news about Yauch - didn't mean it to be crappy.

Brio, Thursday, 10 September 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

when i was a kid and saw the fight for your right to party video i thought ad rock was the coolest by far, so i am voting for him on that basis.

rap telekenisis or some equally retarded nerd shit (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 10 September 2009 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

it's all good, Brio, just saying! i like the idea of fav band members polls, though.

some dude, Thursday, 10 September 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

Schellenbach, just because who the fuck cares, really?

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Thursday, 10 September 2009 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

ha! omg... i was regularly trolled there bitd.

yeah yeah, I remember the heavy teen American membership going from “this guy claims to be a critic, what a LYING LIAR trying to impress us,” to “oh shit he really is... well how DARE a PASTY BRIT even THINK about writing about our Boys”

Young Scott Young (sic), Friday, 11 September 2009 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

Get On the Mic

Random trolling, brutal snubs, darted zings & decisive bans (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 11 September 2009 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

From "Girls" on, Ad-Rock's definitely brought the best game vocally - that MTV Movie Awards makes his relative enthusiasm more than clear. MCA's rasp used to be cool (plus I love that "I Don't Know" song) but post-"Alive" that shit sounds shot. Mike D um yeah I can see why Rick Rubin wanted this guy gone. Though it's not like any of them sound good on the new one.

da croupier, Friday, 11 September 2009 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Voting Mike D for that amazing story he used to tell about DJ SHAdow and James LaVELLE.

Mark, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

what's the story?

Brio, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

"DJ SHAdow and James LaVELLE"

Ha, like the spelling! That's from 'Psynce Fiction' isn't it?

Now I'm a break it down in the UNKLE style
Drums of death that are worth your while
In the file, I'll dial, I said
Anyone who says we're not versatile

Cause it's me, M-I-K-E to the D
Getting down, U-N-K-L-E
For this you pay a fee
It's not for free
We're coming to the end of the century

Crossing continental with these beats
And getting your ass up and out your seats
The drop-top up with the Flintstone feets
We're gonna put you down with the tasty treats

Hand me the mic and I will say
Living positive each and every day
Whether in the fall or the month of may
Lavelle be getting down with no delay

Yeah drums of death y'all
Put me to the test y'all
Never rest, y'all, yeah
Check it out, uh

I got a little story to tell
With DJ Shadow and James Lavelle
It starts right now in history
And I am known as the rapper Mike D.

Funky funky beats, one-two, break it down
Deliver it on down with the A-1 sound
Ounce by ounce and pound for pound
Got the shit that's out of bounds

The beat's on time and I hope you feel
Nice and complete like a happy meal
Sounds of tomorrow. Can't y'all just steal?
Or is it too hectic for y'all to deal?

Gotta keep moving 'till we hit the top
My boys Unkle gonna let the beat drop
Grab the mic and I start to mop
Like I done since day one in the game of hip-hop!
Hip hop....hip hop

Mark, Thursday, 1 October 2009 01:53 (fifteen years ago)
