What "goths" from the eighties have used funk beats? Surely goth music isn't all about shooting up and slashing your wrists. I am trying to make a new mix CD and your suggestions are appreciated.

Dude, get thee to Bauhaus' art damaged glam disco circa Mask. Check out the basslines on Dancing and Kick In The Eye (especially the live versions thereof) and those disco hi-hats and tell me goth is depressing?
― Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)
The Pop Group is sort of in this ballpark.
Bauhaus did cover Third Uncle, which has kickdrum syncopation not unlike that found in funk.

there's syncopation in the reversed horns and hi-hat, and most of the other parts. seems like they're going for a version of that 80s funk thing. the kick & snare are holding it down on the beat, just like in 90% of prince and p-funk songs.
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

Also, if industrial (Wax Trax style) counts, there's lots of stuff, probably -- from KMFDM and that Minsistry album that Adrian Sherwood produced on down. But I don't know if it does.
And lots of disco and rap (and probably funk) groups have incorporated music that sounds like goth, too. But that's another thread.

Yeah Bauhaus def dabbled in this, especially on their B sides/ep tracks and things.
I'm thinking you could, in a pinch, put "Peppermint Pig" by the Cocteau Twins in here. It's at least dance-beaty, if not strictly funky.
There any Kate Bush that's got a funk thing going on?
― Dearth Disco (Trayce), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

Are Love & Rockets considered gothy, or did Peter Murphy take that with him? I've always considered "*** (Jungle Law)" to be kinda funky...
― henry s, Thursday, 10 September 2009 01:08 (sixteen years ago)
we've been stretching the definition of goth pretty broadly already in this thread, so L&R are hardly out of place.
