Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes is currently in his Athens, Georgia, home studio working on the band's tenth album, which will be titled False Priest and is tentatively due out next spring. We briefly spoke to Barnes this past Wednesday about his progress on False Priest, which he says is influenced by Parliament and the '80s No Wave scene. "We're kind of making this psychedelic, No Wave, funk album," says Barnes.
So what are you guys working on right now? Are you working on the new record already?
Kevin Barnes: Yeah actually, I'm working on a new record it's gonna be called False Priest. Right now, I'm just kinda like fooling around, just making songs and experimenting. And I'm not so much thinking about what songs are going to be on there or what I'm going to do with the songs. I'm just going to be really free and not think about the outside world at all. I think that's the best way to make music—if you're not thinking about anything other than just being absorbed by the creative process. So that's what I'm trying to do now is just listening to a lot of music and making a lot of music and just kind of immersing myself. I have enough songs now for one album, but I want to just keep writing, see if there's anything else pops up. And then we'll probably release it in the spring of next year...

For a while now, theatrical Athens art freaks of Montreal have been working on a new album called False Priest, featuring production from film composer and Kanye West/Fiona Apple collaborator Jon Brion and guest appearances from indie-loving R&B sirens Janelle Monáe and Solange Knowles...
Brion co-produced the album with frontman Kevin Barnes. Barnes recorded an initial version of the album at his own Apollinaire Rave studio in Athens, Georgia, then re-recorded, mixed, and engineered it with Brion at Ocean Way Recording in Los Angeles...
At this website: http://iheartvinyl.polyvinylrecords.com/em/coquette/ , download lead single "Coquet Coquette", a song that'll get a video later this summer. The LP is also up for pre-order now.

Jon Brion earning his keep there - sounds a hell of a lot more expansive than the recent LPs.

yeah much better than that first one. these last few albums have sort of been a whole is greater than the sum of the parts thing, though, so i'm trying not to put too much stock in these random mp3s
― Jacques_Lamure, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)
From two released songs (plus the janelle monae collab), it sounds like they may have gone back to what made me love them in the first place - fun, sunshiney, slightly quirky, danceable beats.I hardly ever listened to Skeletal Lamping; it was too all over the place for me (although it did have a few nice moments). But I think False Priest has promise of picking up where Hissing Fauna left off. At least, I hope.

Listened to the first few tracks this morning... interesting. a little more organic and rocky from what I could hear. There was a song about a guy who's infatuated with a girl and when he eventually starts going out with her she turns out to be extremely mean and controlling.

Not sure I'm digging this album yet - it sounds kind of strait-laced and rocky compared to the last two, and a lot of the lyrics (as alluded to in titchy's post above) verge heavily on the self-parodic. Then again part of me is hoping it'll grow on me. Apparently they got a band and full orchestra in for this one, but I can't hear it.

Saw these dudes monday night. Crowd was more into Janelle Monae than the new material. False Priest is basically their worst album since before Sunlandic Twins. "Our Riotous Defects" is the worst song they've done in a long time, and it's absolutely bizarre that it's the second song on the album. The album ends strong though, over the last six or seven songs plus coquette coquet. I'm not giving up on this band, but I feel like their basically back to putting out albums that are more miss than hit.

Another disappointing album, two in a row now. I'm guessing they'll never quite get back to the Satanic Panic/Sunlandic feel, which was definitely my favorite period of theirs.

Went to see them a couple weeks ago even though I don't really like this album at all. Have seen them 3 or 4 times before and they were always excellent. Walked out after 4 songs. The sound was awful and they completely fucked with and changed the two old (read: good) songs they played. It was sort of embarrassing to watch.

I dont like any of their albums since The Sunlandic Twins, which with Satanic Panic.. are the albums that are what I see as their twin peaks of utter fabness. I am not trying to be controvertial or dismissing their post Sunlandic output but my humble opinion is that Hissing Fauna, Skeletal Lamping and False Priest all could be edited into fantastic EP's and are very frustrating to listen all the way through. It really annoys me because I have a lorra goodwill for them and have been dissapointed with every album since Sunlandic. Maybe I am just a cloth eared cunt or something.

of Montreal‘s latest studio, False Priest, arrives September 14th. That’s three weeks from now. Yet in a recent interview with Express Night Out (via Prefix), the band’s figurehead, Kevin Barnes, revealed that he’s already eying the release of another studio effort. In fact, he already has a title — The Controller Sphere – and release date — Spring 2011.According to Barnes, the EP represents the final part of an ongoing trilogy that he first envisioned in 2007 and which was later realized in 2008′s Skeletal Lamping and the forthcoming False Priest. The songs on The Controller Sphere were written at the same time as the material on False Priest, and at least one came from the same sessions with producer Jon Brion.“There’s three songs that we were initially going to put on False Priest that we decided to cut at the last second,” Barnes said. “I haven’t decided which I want to put on there but there’s a lot of material to choose from.”More details as they become available. Until then, enjoy False Priest (via Polyvinyl) on September 14th and/or of Montreal on their currently ongoing North American tour.A mini-album of sorts, thecontrollersphere is a folk album only in the way of Montreal could envision a folk album.Clocking in at 23 minutes, thecontrollersphere includes the long-awaited studio version of live favorite “Black Lion Massacre” — a pulsing sonic freakout that is the darkest and noisiest song Barnes has ever written and serves as thecontrollersphere’s mission statement.
