songs from the '60s that sound like they were recorded by retro-fetishists 20-40 years down the line

it's kind've a strange feeling when a psych-pop type song comes up on shuffle and I immediately think, 'this must be some Elephant 6 stuff,' only to discover I've been listening to Sagittarius or the Beach Boys or some other 40-year-old record. like, the first few seconds of the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night" always put me in the mind of the Dukes of Stratosphear, the first track on the Millennium album really really seems like something Cornelius must've pieced together, and "Lazy Day" by the Left Banke would sound exactly like the Sunshine Fix if you changed the first word of the title to "Sunny". for a few confused seconds I feel like this stuff can't possibly be from the '60s, so it must be the product of some paisley-wearing '60s-obsessed indie dudes from Georgia.

I'd love to see some more examples of this, if anyone has a few.

"Feel Flows" by the Beach Boys sounds like any number of current "sunshine pop" bands could have recorded it.

dumb thread? :-/

Well, no. But the question could be rephrased as "What bands/songs are people imitating today?"

fair 'nuff

but that's not what I have in mind, really. I'm looking for stuff that's so clearly recorded ("modern-sounding") and so stereotypically '60s that it really sounds like the product of revivalists rather than authentic period work. eh, maybe it's too tough an order, because I can't even come up with more than a few examples myself.

last song that did that for me was the four season's beggin. sounds kinda like something cee-lo/gnarls barkley would come out with today.

xpost huh, I saw that ad and assumed the music to be something recent. So that's a good one.

the Four Seasons clip is a remix to be fair, but I see what you mean -- if you made the drum sound from the original version a little louder & higher in the mix, you'd end up with a definite hip-hop feel. great song btw.

i missed the follow up description of the request. The Carole King doesn't fit it at all. I was thinking of stuff that has qualities that are so far ahead of their time, like the King song which sounds like some contemporary noisy psyche thing.

wrong!

the zombies "butcher's tale" always makes me think some band of like, 19 canadians with an annoying name is being played. i like the zombies, though.

Rotary Connection was one of my revisionist ILM 70s poll discoveries, but I still haven't heard much. They seem really great though.

xp you should check out their first couple of albums

Turangalila, Sunday, 25 April 2010 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

thanks Reverend, that's great stuff. it's interesting to hear Minnie Riperton's voice in a psych-pop context when I'm more familiar with her chamber-soul stuff. and those drums!

The new Apples In Stereo sounds a lot like Sagittarius' second album. Or maybe more the other way round, as such extensive use of synth was not usual in 1969...
