Lots of good ones in here, lots of good doo-wop, one of my favourite Holly songs, etc. (+ "Rip Van Winkle" is one of my favourite discoveries from the book), but there's no way it can be anything other than "I'll Be Around."

sw00ds, Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

Voted for Newcleus.

vulva eyes (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

I never understood why he put "Jam On Revenge" in the book instead of "Jam On It." (Or did he? They're two different songs, right?)

Anyway, I might go for "Jam On It", too, if that wasn't so ambiguous. But Bob Seger gets my vote.

xhuxk, Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

In my copy it's listed as "Jam On It.|

Shut up.

Anyway, maybe it was a fact-checker error, corrected in a later edition?

xhuxk, Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

Spinners, just over Newcleus.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

Marvelettes over Buddy, Frogman, Spinners and Newcleus.

all you need is love vs. money (that's what i want) (Ioannis), Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

Spinners for me too, with not much competition. I'll disagree with sw00ds about the doo-wop, though, which for me is kind of pedestrian.

clemenza, Sunday, 13 September 2009 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

It's not in the book, it's whoever put the list online that mistitled it. Anyway, I voted Marvelettes.

if I don't see more dissent, I'm going to have to check myself in (Matos W.K.), Sunday, 13 September 2009 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

I probably was a bit quick on the draw with my doo-wop comment, but I do love "A Thousand Miles Away" and Jesse Belvin's "Goodnight My Love" but I'm not sure if that counts (maybe it's "r&b"?). I don't recall either Shep & the Limeliters song that well, though.

sw00ds, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

Classic Old school from Spinners/Stylistics, fun Bobby Day, early R&B from Jesse Belvin, great Doo Wop and "Lucille", but I'm going with the Spinners because Phillipe Wynne is one of the most overlooked R&B singers ever.

jetfan, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

well, fuck me. this is hard. here are my top, uh, eight:

Etta James I'd rather go blind
Buddy Holly Well all right
Chuck Berry Nadine
Spinners I'll be around
Jesse Belvin Goodnight my love
Bob Seger 2 + 2 = ?
Fats Domino Ain't that a shame
Stylistics Break up to make up

i almost voted for "ill be around," but in truth although it's a beautiful song, it can easily wear out its welcome by how repetitive it is as a piece of songwriting.

amateurist, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

so yeah i vote for etta.

amateurist, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

some serious muscle shoals shit right there.

amateurist, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

"Nadine" over Spinners and Beatles.

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

damn, I missed the Spinners--that's definitely my favorite here; ah well

if I don't see more dissent, I'm going to have to check myself in (Matos W.K.), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

Buddy Holly. Well All Right was the winner in the recent Buddy Holly poll, too.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 14 September 2009 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

I missed seeing the Spinners too, actually. Not sure whether I would have voted for them, but it would've been close. And Seger deserves at least one vote here, so I really don't mind.

xhuxk, Monday, 14 September 2009 00:50 (sixteen years ago)

the seger is pretty great, perhaps not deathless.

amateurist, Monday, 14 September 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

"I'll Be Around" over "Revolution" and "Lucille"

wacky spelling error (Euler), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 09:02 (sixteen years ago)

Heh. I was gonna vote for Seger, but Chuck's apparently got that covered. Clarence Brown singin' like a frog it is!

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

Clarence Henry, rather. Dunno why I do that so often.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

Hearing the Clarence Frogman Henry record is basically guaranteed to make people happier.

dad a, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

True! But I'm still voting Seger.

Oh, and it's "Jam on Revenge" in my copy of the book too.

3-Way Tie For Last

(actually first)

President Keyes, Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

it's "Jam on Revenge" in my copy of the book too.

Okay, this is getting curiouser and curiouser. Like one of those weird "variations" that baseball card collectors love so much. I hereby request that everybody who (unlike me) owns a copy of this book tally (1) which Newcleus title their copy lists and (2) what the edition/ copyright year of their copy is. My theory is that some books came out with "Jam On Revenge," and Marsh blew a gasket, and then had it fixed.

xhuxk, Thursday, 17 September 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

...uh, never mind, sorry, false alarm, I misspoke...it's "Jam On It" after all. I was posting from work and relying on my memory - not always a good idea. (One of TWO factual errors I posted yesterday btw.)

Random trolling, brutal snubs, darted zings & decisive bans (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 17 September 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

(To put it in proper context, though, there are quite a few mistakes by Marsh in that book)

Random trolling, brutal snubs, darted zings & decisive bans (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 17 September 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

both my copies are "Jam on It" First Printing, October, 1989 123456789 Plume.

I voted Marvelettes because it's the one I've listened to most often the last few years. Rocks hard and sexy.

Zachary Taylor, Thursday, 17 September 2009 15:59 (sixteen years ago)
