Advice not taken

Do you ever regret not taking someone's advice on music? For example, a friend with very good taste warned me that the new Nick Cave album was pretty iffy and should probably be avoided. I of course ignored her and bought it anyway. She was right! It's not very good at all.

doh!

Nick Cave? Not very good?

Nirvana at JC Dobbs in Philadelphia 1991. (A place about the size of your bedroom.) A friend told me that I could borrow his ID for the show (I wasn't yet 21) but I was worried about getting busted and his ID getting taken. Silly me.

I'm usually more annoyed by the advice I do take.

Come to think of it, very few people ever give me advice on music.

Tom, if I gave you advice on music, you wouldn't take it. If you did, you'd probably regret it.

It is? How frustrating. The show last month was fantastic -- oh well, I'll have to listen and judge for myself.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ned, you STILL haven't listened? i demand that nicole explain herself. what do you mean "it's not very good at all"? i quite enjoy it, myself. ned, my advice to you is to listen to it. ;)

I suppose I regret not taking Simon Reynolds's advice on the street / undie rap divide earlier than I did.

Stevie T is always eloquently banging on about new bands and things I've never heard of, and sometimes I might as well have believed him from the start, rather than waiting to discover that he was right all along. Then again, I'm convinced that he's wrong about some of the things he promotes, so maybe this caution is ultimately necessary.

Immediate gratification, Fred, is not the only way to proceed.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i suppose not, neddy, especially when one has so many YO LA TENGO records to listen to before proceeding to so-called new releases.

;)

To be honest fred I've only listened to it a couple of times so far so it might very well grow on me. But so far, the album has been a real let down. I have a big problem with the production -- it seems too slick and 80's; not in a Duran Duran sense, but more of a Don Henley or Sting solo album sense. It's very distracting. And the singing style! He seems to be striving for a sort of croon on this album, but oftentimes it comes across as very Phantom of the Opera. With another singer this could have worked for me, but with Cave it seems very odd. And the McGarrigle sisters backing vocals add nothing; again, very distracting and unnecessary. The songs themselves seem a little too weak lyrically and musically, but that may be due to the production. There are a couple I like, but the rest is very disposable. Not terrible per se, but terribly disappointing.

So speaks a man whose back catalogue of Smashing Pumpkins bootlegs to listen to mounts daily.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins bootlegs sounds like a whole lot of fun. A big mountain of them. WIth a sledgehammer.

Nick, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

With Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer'.

Follow your instinct. What's right for you, ain't necessarily right for someone with 'very good taste'. Someone with 'taste' told to avoid LUOMO. Mind you, I can't get over 'Live to Tell' by Madonna, so don't take my advice.

K-reg, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nor can I.

I followed my instincts and wasn't thrilled with the results this time...

I don't think it's a great idea to chase music trends in a lemming- like fashion, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to listen to recommendations (or lack of recommendation). I wouldn't have found out about a lot of music otherwise.

Nicole, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn straight. But, an example of what I mean, a couple of times friends have asked me to help them pick out a good stereo, cause they don't know what sounds good. But if they don't know what sounds good, what does it matter. I only find recommendations useful when I cross reference them: with other people/sources, with what I know about the person recommending it. You're right, it's not a great idea to chase music trends, but it's a good start.

K-reg, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I shoulda gotten into jungle two years earlier than I did.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend of mine warned me that Doves was pure shit. I borrowed the album from another friend and listened to it. What an awful way to waste an hour of my life...
