i ask you ladies and gentlemen to consider the songs you adore. what, if anything, do they have in common?

unrelated: does anyone here have any pickup lines that have yielded results? the losers on the bulletin board i traditionally frequent wouldn't really be of much help on this matter as this photo will best illustrate:

thank you and good night.

For me, the most essential ingredient (there are loads) is the chord structure.

Re chat-up lines, I asked my mum this when I was 11...& her reply was "Hi there good lookin'". I can't believe I've just told everyone this...

"this place/these people/this band/whatever sucks, lets get out of here" is good.

unknown or illegal user, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as a "chat up line" i mean.

unknown or illegal user, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"You have very beautiful breasts" said in a non-leering manner tends to work quite well.

*SMACK!*

For me, I think honesty is a key ingedient. Another would be originality. Pretension, however, will ruin the recipe immediately - I prefer originality without striving for originality, honesty without striving for "honesty." Mostly only insane or eccentric people can accomplish these feats. They (the artists) have got to be able to make music without worrying about what others think.

Those I have on my music list right now are: The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Nick Drake, Tiny Tim, Brute Force, Burzum, Captain Beefheart, Daniel Johnston, Wild Man Fischer, Harry Partch, Hasil Adkins, Jandek, Joe Meek, Mayhem, Pink Floyd (w/ Syd Barrett only), Syd Barrett, The Shaggs, and Wesley Willis. Others I like are The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, David Bowie, The Southern Death Cult, Eric Pounder, Monte Cazazza, Modest Mouse, Neutral Milk Hotel.

Can't say it any better than Philip. Musical innovation and honesty, without feeling any need to "justify" the music.

Siegbran Hetteson, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone else start reading Philip's post and think he was talking about chat-up techniques?

chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its SOUND must excite me. Hence why I listen to Noizu. In brain! In brain!

Pickup lines: "I've watched you dancing there for quite a while, and it seems obvious that you CAN'T. So I wondered if you fancied a chat & a drink instead???"

"Your teeth are like the stars - they come out at night."

Just flat out asking someone to come back to your place does work, but not all the time.

I've no idea what makes good music. Every time I think of somehting I come up with an exception. If anything, sincerity, and keeping it simple.

Andrew, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to find that ladies prefer gentleman not obsessed by the FMBB or people who post on the FMBB. On going FMBB jokes are as tedious as "dingo" jokes or "comparing you to Larkin" jokes. Who gives a fuck.

As for good music -- the opposite of Malkmus.

Jack Cole, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh it's an FMBB thread.

Anyway - hooks. That's about it. If you're sincere and/or honest yourself you shouldn't have to worry about other people being so (unless they're your mates, in which case you're probably getting your records free anyhow). If you're not you certainly shouldn't worry about it.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''Anyway - hooks. That's about it.''

So all this writing abt music, all this guff on FT and all the 'issues'...and when it comes down to it it's just...hooks.

I wish it was that easy for me. The more I listen to the less I know.

It is very important not to have an irritating voice; that's why I find female vocalists annoying (I'm talking about good music here!) There are 2 different types of song that require different things: 1)Good chord sequence and catchy tune, or 2)Unusual\weird. I liked the teeth line.

you need at least a heaping teaspoon of the phrase "c'mon c'mon," as it's been scientifically proven that any song with "c'mon c'mon" in it is going to be pretty damn great.

Music must have something interesting. May be the way it is played, the chord sequence, the lyrics, a bass line... I listen to all kinds of music, and there is infinite ways to listen to music. each way is a discovery.

pickup line: as i am good looking, anything works...

Elvis is Dead, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the space between the notes that seperates good from mediocre.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

that sounds kinda zen, cos i don't know what it means.

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

as per my above post, all you've gotta do between the notes is say "c'mon, c'mon." it's that simple.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

...or maybe "umami" is the answer. Shotgun on that band name, though I'm sure it's too late

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

it's like you want to get excelsiored.

get that pion down you son (Frogman Henry), Thursday, 25 December 2008 08:43 (seventeen years ago)

obviously the most important ingredient to good music is good melody, as unnecesarry and vague a thing that is to say. whenever i think that i could never like a song in a certain style of music, invariably i will eventually hear a song with such an undeniably beautiful melody that i just won't be able to resist.

as far as your question goes, i have to differentiate betwen two different types of favourite songs: songs that struck me the first time i heard them and i have loved ever since, and those that grew on me. as far as the latter goes, i have no fucking clue what makes me like them so much. the former, however, are less mysterious in their appeal. instantly likeable songs tend to have something weird and shocking about them. they present a new permutation of our twelve notes that i wouldn't have ever conceived as being possible, and thereby expand my perception of what music can be. they are often simple catchy, but stick their fingers directly into my brain and are impossible to ignore.
