ARGH @ title pluralisation.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

The truthful answer is that I've never had a favourite Beatle. It's a bit like asking me what's my favourite part of a ham and cheese sandwich: the bread, the butter, the ham or the cheese. (Or the lady in the sandwich shop who made the sandwich. Or the turkey that was in the sandwich yesterday.)

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:02 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely the butter.

Comedy last three options put in so people don't complain

wanted to vote for yoko and/or billy preston actually

thomp, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

No Klaus Vorrmann, no credibility.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

I had pondered putting Steve Sheridan and Brian Epstein in.

I was just having this discussion in the office, and my answer was "Paul without John is too saccharine, John without Paul is too misanthropic, George without either is a bit anal, and Ringo without any of them does Thomas The Tank Engine."

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:13 (fifteen years ago)

klaus was awesome actually

maybe another poll: "favourite beatle that wasn't actually one of the fucking beatles, shut up you twats"

thomp, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:17 (fifteen years ago)

"Ringo without any of them does Thomas The Tank Engine"

Exactly the reason he's my son's favourite Beatle.

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

there was turkey in the sandwich yesterday? then she shouldn't be selling it to you imo.

jabba hands, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:20 (fifteen years ago)

ARGH @ title pluralisation.

Thanks for getting my hopes up, I was looking forward to voting for the Beatle Barkers.

write-in for pete sutcliffe

aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck me, I put Stuart Sutcliffe.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

& Steve Sheridan, wtf?

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah?

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:05 (fifteen years ago)

Um, Stuart Sutcliffe is right, yeah?

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

pete sutcliffe

Maxwell's Silver Hammer?

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

it'll be funny if this gets an "ironic" winner !!

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:08 (fifteen years ago)

Stuart Sutcliffe was in The Beatles and Peter Sutcliffe was the Yorkshire ripper?

I'm editing oodles of web pages for the uni and evidently my ability to remember simple fgacts has suffered as a result of the amount of times I've had to change e-mail to email.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

See also: George Best, Tony Harrison, Aaron Lennon, Robert McCartney QC, Georgina Starr and Todd Martin.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

Now I see that you're trying to confuse me but I KNOW that George Best was in The Beatles because he had the hair.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

Did anyone see that "Beatles Cover versions" BBC Special?

Specifically Buddy Rich?

Now, that was a Beatle hairdo!

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

(Please note: Georgina Starr's birth name was David Starkey).

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

this is beautiful

"Paul without John is too saccharine, John without Paul is too misanthropic, George without either is a bit anal, and Ringo without any of them does Thomas The Tank Engine."

Who would win in a Favourite Beatles Wives POLL?

I saw your posse, but now it's me who's bossy (DavidM), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

Sonia Sutcliffe?

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

as a lad, John by a fair distance. as an adult I have grown much more partial to George.

Hat Trick Swayze (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

usually say john. tho some of my favorite beatles tunes are paul's (you never give me your money, all the great side 2 stuff on abbey road, etc)

mark cl, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

Paul's the only one I've come into 'contact' with.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

And wot kind of "contact" was that, Mark??

t**t, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

Hippie John annoys me, making this hard. I find John the most lovable in A Hard Day's Night and it's that film that I return to in thinking of my favorite Beatle; so I'll vote for John.

wacky spelling error (Euler), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

Paul is also the only one I've come into "contact" with. (Can this be the 10th thread on which I tell the story of sitting next to the McCartneys at the cinema for Bedknobs and Broomsticks? I gave all my sweets to Stella.)

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

Patted him on the shoulder.

There was a Personal Appearance in a bookshop on Picadilly, back in the day. Many people outside, as you may expect, and as there was a TV crew around, I sort of acted like I was one of them and stayed where I was (outside Boots), out of the general scrum. To get to meet him, you had to have purchased the book and reserved yr time slot in the shop, etc...

Just then, his limo arrives and paul gets out, waves, and walks past me. General scrum, I think to myself "hey, it'd be rude not to" in the general mobbing, so gently patted his shoulder.

There you go.

A few years later, we (i.e. I and Family) met Stella, properly. She was nice.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, I'm sure it was Mary who got all my Opal Fruits - we're much closer in age.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Well done, both of you.

t**t, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

After lotsa afterthoughts, I think I'll vote for George.

t**t, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

Used to think Ringo was OK until he appeared in those 2 Aviva adverts, the first saying "would I have got where I am today if I was still called Richard Starkey", the 2nd whinging "don't call me by my stage name", that and telling fans to stop writing to him because he's too busy shilling for insurance companies to read them. Fuck off Ringo.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

^^^Nailed Ringo

Gotta be George tbh, even though he became a curmudgeonly "GERROFFMOILAAAAND" type in his later years. Would like to see Paul achieve a second place showing for his charmingly ridiculous Glastonbury '03 performance.

give me sluts (Upt0eleven), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

John, because he was the most flawed as a human being, the coolest (until the bed-in, that is), and also for his vocal on "Rock and Roll Music."

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta be George tbh, even though he became a curmudgeonly "GERROFFMOILAAAAND" type in his later years.

Our "centre of operations" (i.e. the crash house) was just down the road from his mansion. Never did see him around. Although my sister's dancing teacher was mates with Olivia, so she got in on a regular basis...

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

> became a curmudgeonly "GERROFFMOILAAAAND" type in his later years

does this have much to do with one of his bandmates being killed and he himself having been stabbed by a intruder, do you think?

koogs, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

heh, that might make one a little paranoid. But I actually liked that George -- after seeming pretty dour throughout the 70s -- actually did seem to lighten up a bit in his older age. At least that's the impression I get from the Traveling Wilburies ...

tylerw, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

George bankrolled some great movies

Hat Trick Swayze (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

Time Bandits, Life of Brian, Withnail and I, How to Get Ahead in Advertising

Hat Trick Swayze (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

I would've said Paul at any time during the last few years - I love his bass more and more with time - but since I saw him on Ed Sullivan I'm saying George. I thought he was meant to be the shy awkward kid, but seeing him mugging and standing in the middle, and walking around the stage like he owned it, was a revelation.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

Him or Apu.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

in some ways, I'm inclined to vote for George not just because of his Beatles songs, or All Things Must Pass, or the Cheer Down single, or for introducing the west to Ravi Shankar, or for the genius of "Don't Wait Me Wait Too Long", or the films... but also because he seems like the least assholish/boorish of the bunch. A guy who was genuine and funny and warm and understated and, in his own way, very wise

Hat Trick Swayze (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

probably had the worst teeth of all of them tho yikes

Hat Trick Swayze (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

Lennon - until he started crying for his mommy.

musicfanatic, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

Paul was in the best Simpsons episode.

Can't use that as an indicator of who to pick though as John was long dead. Lennon wrote more great song than anyone else, so it has to be him. Would most probably vote Lennon in a "which Beatle would you most like to punch in the face?" because I loved Thomas The Tank Engine as a kid and Paul redeemed himself by being in my favourite Simpsons episode and bankrolling some shitty fake sausages.

Like BANG! Bust 'em in the wang like it aint no thang (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

John up until the time he met Yoko..

Paul in the early to mid 70s - in his laid back spliff-smoking 'farmer mc cartney" phase, before Wings become too big.

George in the mid-late 70s from the time he met Olivia and cheered up a bit

Bob Six, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

george was always my favorite. true fact: i had some friends i used to play beatles with when i was about 9. we'd put on the records and mime the music. i was always george.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

John for this...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBRss3HUipw

I've come to the conclusion that Magical Mystery Tour is a piece of random WTF genius.

leavethecapital, Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

No Yoko, no credibility. She's always been my favorite Beatle.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

shakey OTM -- ha, i thought i was the only one who loved 'cheer down.'

but i'll have to go with john, because in the end he's still the most interesting one of the bunch.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 17 September 2009 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

Simply cannot choose. So, I won't be.

Mark G, Thursday, 17 September 2009 06:42 (fifteen years ago)

No Yoko, no credibility. She's always been my favorite Beatle.

Any particular reason?

Bob Six, Thursday, 17 September 2009 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah because the world has caught up to the Beatles and it still hasn't caught up to what Yoko was doing in the early 70s. She's a fine artist, and the other guys are/were craftsman (albeit with a ton of soul).

Not taking anything away from the guys in my favorite band--I just have always found Yoko utterly compelling ever since I discovered her on b-sides of my mother's Lennon records.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 17 September 2009 07:33 (fifteen years ago)

Thinking back:
1964 to 1970 - Ringo: the funny, cheeky, dorky, kid-friendly one.
1970 to 1973 - George: My Sweet Lord, What Is Life, Hare Krishna mystic exoticism.
1973 to 1976 - Paul: this was my Wings phase.
1976 to 1981 - John: original rebel rocker, stick it to The Man, etc.
1981 to now - no favourite.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

1976 to 1981 - John: original rebel rocker, stick it to The Man, etc.

This was his housewife period though. "Double Fantasy" was the only thing he made (which is a nice album btw)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 20 September 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, but I was talking about my personal viewpoint during that period. So it didn't necessarily have anything to do with release schedules.

mike t-diva, Monday, 21 September 2009 10:29 (fifteen years ago)

Missed this poll but I guess Paul has finally overtaken John for me, mainly because I find just about everyone of Paul's post Beatle releases fascinating however flawed they may be. I really only have time for John's first solo album and parts of Imagine. (Of course, I realize Paul's had the chance to record for thirty years more than John did).

Also, because of Paul's songwriting on Revolver. Not that Lennon's isn't great either...

ColinO, Monday, 21 September 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

Ringo was always the best Beatle. He wrote their best songs.

Mike Crandle, Financial Analyst, Bear Stearns, New York, NY 10185 (res), Monday, 21 September 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

I love his stinging guitar fills.

vulva eyes (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 21 September 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

he's my favorite simply 'cause he was the biggest Beatle's fan of the four; he REALLY loved being in this band.

all you need is love vs. money (that's what i want) (Ioannis), Monday, 21 September 2009 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

I'm coming to terms (while listening to the reissues) that even though I'd take post-Beatles Paul any day, it may be John while the actual band existed. I don't like this, but there you go.

dlp9001, Monday, 21 September 2009 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

'cause he was the biggest Beatle's fan of the four

honestly I think this was Paul, not Ringo

Hat Trick Swayze (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 21 September 2009 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno, Ringo always seems happiest when they're all together. also, he's the one that worked with all three post-Beatles, no?

all you need is love vs. money (that's what i want) (Ioannis), Monday, 21 September 2009 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

"he REALLY loved being in this band"

He was also the first to try to quit because he felt unappreciated.

Nate Carson, Monday, 21 September 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

So McCartney just played the drums instead! That must've really helped
