This isn't limited to the opera itself, since (I would guess) probably more people know Miles Davis' versions of some of its songs. I'm not sure where exactly consensus lies with regard to its racism; I would venture to guess it's one of those "yes, it's racist, but it's also important to the history of American culture..." viewpoints. And isn't it just weird to hear opera sung in English? I mean, it obviously exists, Britten comes to mind, but it just feels so unnatural. It's weird listening to it and understanding what people are saying. I would almost prefer it were in Italian..

And lastly, what do you think is the best song in the whole thing?

i only know the miles version but its my favorite of the gil evans records ... on that one, 'prayer (oh dr. jesus)' is just O_O
