RFI: April Showers "Abandon Ship"

After seeing this go for a trillion dollars (almost) on eBay, and hearing stories about it being a 'lost classic' my interest was piqued.

So I managed to track down a promo CD copy of it (which has a Chrysalis logo and cat #). It is a great song, but why are the vocals so damn low? Is this how it's meant to sound? Have I got a dodgy bootleg? Can anyone offer insight?

Though Mr. F's answer is likely to read something like this.

Can Chrysalis have been putting out promo CDs in 1984?

The CD certainly isn't from '84 - I doubt it's even 10 years old. Maybe there was a planned reissue that didn't happen? I don't know. All I know is the music sounds ace and the vocals are nigh on inaudible.
