I think a more complicated answer than Jack's (nothing really wrong with his but I think it's relying on something else that would 'explain' why gay people might prefer straight artists too) would involve something about the way the performer presents their identity or identities to the listener, or plays with identity.

Most of the people I interact with daily are gay and none of them have heard of the pet shop boys. I know one person who knows of them, and likes them, and he's a straight, sort of frat boyish guy.

Hey, we're a target audience, and we respond to being targeted.

Also, it helps to be able to relate to some of the lyrical content, although I'm struggling to think of anything in particular - in fact, the only song that really moves me is "Always On My Mind" and that's a cover of one of them heretersexuals innit?

And they sang with DUSTY SPRINGFIELD! 800 gay points for that.

This question was a joke, right? The Pet Shop Boys are fuckin great, so they're really popular. That will inevitably give them gay fans. And then they're actually gay...and they sound really gay. So obviously they're gonna have a ton of gay fans. I mean, maybe not anymore, now it's probably different because they're kinda out of style and most of the people that still listen to them are probably somewhat "into" music. But I'd imagine of those people who are still listening to them, a fair share are gay--the gay appeal will never wane. It's like wondering why lonely smelly guys love Dinosaur Jr.
