"Dizzy Miss Lizzy" over "You Like Me Too Much" over "Tell Me What You See". Until the remasters I counted this as a favorite but after listening to both stereo remasters and the mono remaster, I'm not sure anymore. I found the second side pretty laggy, with "I've Just Seen A Face" slaying as usual and "Yesterday" duh but otherwise kinda dull.

Soul Finger! (Euler), Sunday, 20 September 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

This is the easiest one so far. I Need You - that fucking volume pedal is terrible.

nate woolls, Sunday, 20 September 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

"You Like Me Too Much."

vulva eyes (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 20 September 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

"Dizzy Miss Lizzy". Should have been swapped with "Yes It Is", which would have been a perfect closer whereas "Dizzy..." would have fitted better hitten away on the b-side of "Ticket To Ride".

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 21 September 2009 00:28 (sixteen years ago)

And I absolutely love "You Like Me Too Much". One of my favourite tracks on this album.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 21 September 2009 00:28 (sixteen years ago)

"Dizzy Miss Lizzy" easy, same rationale as "Rock and Roll Music"--pointless. This is my favourite Beatles album. Two songs on my short-list of absolute favourites--"I Need You" and "Tell Me What You See"--have already been mentioned...yikes.

"You Like Me Too Much". the lead electric piano part I find incredibly annoying

iago g., Monday, 21 September 2009 01:32 (sixteen years ago)

I'm strongly considering SB'ing the "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" haters.

I was going to post pretty much the same reasoning for "You Like Me Too Much" as iago g.

Size-zero-brigade-embrace-token-chubby-chops (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 21 September 2009 01:37 (sixteen years ago)

I trolled against "I Need You" on this thread - George Harrison: Search & Destroy - some good responses.

But my least favorite things here are probably "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" and "Tell Me What You See," which are both just a few BPM too slow, and kinda overbearing. I've heard the former a few too many times, too, so that.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 21 September 2009 02:45 (sixteen years ago)

Watch "Yesterday" win, just for lack of concensus reasons...

Mark G, Monday, 21 September 2009 07:00 (sixteen years ago)

btw, "It's only love" is great, and JL knows nowt.

Just because it was easy to write...

Mark G, Monday, 21 September 2009 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

BTW, about the film end credits:

At one point, the Beatles hum and lark around to the classical music while the end credits roll.

Until the credit "I Need You (George Harrison)" comes up, at which point George yells out "I NEED YOU GEORGE HARRISON!"

.. at least on the VHS copy. On the ahem DVD I have, the credits have obviously been redone, and george's shout is well off the credit appearing. Which sort of bugged me.

Is it in the right place on the latest DVD version?

Dizzy Miss Lizzy

kornrulez6969, Monday, 21 September 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

^^

i remember reacting strongly to it thinking "why is this here?" even when i got this album age of ten or something

rent, Monday, 21 September 2009 13:49 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah - would be much better as some oddity on Past Masters 1, y'know?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 21 September 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

Naah, it's a "heck, let's party" closing song, innit?

Mark G, Monday, 21 September 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, totally - it's just not the most vividly-performed such number in their catalogue...I dunno. I do like the searing quality of the lead guitar, though it gets a little exhausting over the length of the song. Would take "I'm Down" in its place for sure.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 21 September 2009 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

"You Like Me Too Much" over "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" over "Tell Me What You See" (over "I Need You," thanks for inventing America, George [and George]).

if I don't see more dissent, I'm going to have to check myself in (Matos W.K.), Monday, 21 September 2009 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

Rob Sheffield insists that this album includes the best George songs "known to man" to something.

vulva eyes (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 21 September 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

i love the volume pedal. "dizzy miss lizzy" for obvious reasons, tho it would've been a fine b-side.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Monday, 21 September 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I like the volume pedal, too, but think he used it a bit more tastefully on "Wait" and "Yes it is".

Darin, Monday, 21 September 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

While Rob Sheffield isn't completely right, he does have a point. "I Need You" and "You Like Me To Much" are both really great songs.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 21 September 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

Right, voted "Tell me what you see"

as it's just about seeing someone. That's in front of them. That's it. isn't it?

Mark G, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

can't see a bad one here. even ringo's one has charm

Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

even ringo's? "act naturally" is one of my favorite songs on this, and probably my favorite beatles cover, period (tho "you really got a hold on me" is close).

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

Gee, I kinda like the volume pedal on I Need You.

Can't say I like that damn riff playing over and over again on Dizzy Miss Lizzy though...

Moodles, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

Had a hard time with this one. "I Need You" - the effect of the volume pedal is great, though it would have been nice of George (Martin) to insist on another take or two till George (Harrison) got it, you know, right. But as an okay song and for trying for that vol. pedal effect, it stays on the island.

"Dizzy Miss Lizzy" is not too bad a rocker - again, George is kind of fucking up on his lead parts; he flubs that riff about half the time. John sounds exhausted, and not in a good way. Still, Paul & Ringo keep it driving along, and I can't knock any of the tunes that were on the Rock & Roll Music collection, because I totally rocked out to it when I was about 11 or 12; it was my fave beatles "album." It's wrong here, but it's not the "worst song."

so it's between "You Like Me Too Much" and "Another Girl".

"You Like Me Too Much" sucks in pretty much every way it's possible for the Beatles to suck: it's too cutesy-pie, George's vocal is listless (and not helped by Lennon & McC [and Martin, guilty too], who obviously wanted to get through the obligatory George numbers here and spent all their energies concentrating on arrangements for, you know, the good ones.) Couldn't someone have come up with a catchy guitar lick for the end of the refrain or something? Slackers. The one attempt at something neat in the production is that wholly superfluous piano intro (altho the call-and-response guitar and piano break is OK). There's no cohesiveness to the lyrics - where's the emotional centre? Nowheresville, that's where.

"Another Girl" stinks in most of the same ways. Paul's sleepwalking through the delivery, and no wonder: these lyrics are abysmal in a way I don't think he ever really equalled. The middle eight has a nice little chordal twist to it, though. And... it stays on the island because its chorus isn't as needlingly gooey PLUS it's 30 seconds shorter than the winner:

"You Like Me Too Much." Sorry, George.

staggerlee, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

Definitely better use of volume pedal on "Yes It Is" and "Wait". (And maybe on "Love You To" too?)

Paul is great sometimes, but he's always too bright. There's nothing dumber than a dumb Paul song.

No volume pedal on I Need You. While George played the lead guitar bit, either Paul or John swelled the volume knob on his guitar. That's why it's so choppy. Volume pedals existed at that point in time, but they were pretty much only used by pedal steel and lap steel players.

The Night Before got my vote. I'm pretty partial to the rest of the album.

Brooker T Buckingham, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 06:51 (sixteen years ago)

You Like Me Too Much has a great melody. You're on crack, Staggerlee.

Brooker T Buckingham, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 06:52 (sixteen years ago)

Back when I had this on vinyl, I rarely turned over to side 2 and consequently thought this was quite a weak album.

Bob Six, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 07:00 (sixteen years ago)

"Another Girl" I give a pass on sheer catchiness and fun - agreed that the lyrics don't sustain any kind of close attention, but this is a really hooky song! Especially the way he sings "I ain't no fool" - I'm sure people who don't like Paul can't STAND that, but for a Paul fan like me it's exactly what keeps me coming back for more.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 12:28 (sixteen years ago)

I rarely turned over to side 2 and consequently thought this was quite a weak album.

You didn't play the side that has "Yesterday" on it? You have to be in quite a minority there.

Despite "Yesterday" and "I've Just Seen a Face" (a really great Paul song, sez me) I think of Help! as a John album. His big fat angst sets the general tone. If you put the John songs on this and the ones on Beatles For Sale onto one record, you'd have a seriously dark moment in pop history.

No it doesn't. It's a totally half-baked one. And your mother sold me the crack, so there.

staggerlee, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for it without listening to it again, and now I just did, and it's worse than I remembered. The part that goes "IIIIIIIIIIIIII reeeeeealy do!" is so lazy it's almost funny.

tie me up, dress in drag, and read to me from the bible (kenan), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

George is sort of atetmpting John style mysoginy, but comes up short.

Back whenever, I decided it would have been better as "You like me too much, and I love you"

i.e. the actual level of attraction being somewhat unbalanced. She wants to end it, but she doesn't want to hurt him.

Which is sort of hinted at, but again it's come up short.

So, OK, its fair enough to vote for it.

Did I? Cannae remember.

Good tune though!

"You Like Me Too Much" is a Lennon/McCartney pastich in a lot of ways, but I think it turns out a good one. I like it better than "I Need You" even though together the two of them are the first really good Harrison songs. On this album, the Harrison songs are just as good as the rest.

Who the hell voted for "Ticket To Ride?????"

Pancakes Batman (Pancakes Hackman), Friday, 25 September 2009 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

I've never been a huge fan of Yesterday, but I really can't understand how it came second here.

And yeah, who on earth voted for Ticket To Ride?

The Boxing Kangaroo, Friday, 25 September 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

I don't like "Ticket To Ride" much at all, but voted for "Lizzy" because it's actively bad.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 25 September 2009 01:12 (sixteen years ago)

Huh, looks like I forgot to vote, b/c I very definitely meant to vote for "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away." Oh well.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 25 September 2009 02:26 (sixteen years ago)

Ticket To Ride is the point at which I stop thinking The Beatles are a wicked 60s beat poop combo and start thinking they're properly awesome.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 25 September 2009 06:57 (sixteen years ago)

Indeed, where have all the wicked beat poop combos gone?

Doctor Casino, Friday, 25 September 2009 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

I think that was a typo. It should be bear poop.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 25 September 2009 13:53 (sixteen years ago)

voted for "Yesterday" using pure Geir-logic - i.e. it ain't a Beatles song; rather, it's McCartney solo, innit? automatic disqualification according to one Geir Hongro, as i do recall.
