xp I'm generally very very reticient to say that any given genre of music has no redeeming features at all but I think pornogrind might be an exception to that

In the absence of "True Scottish Pirate Metal," I'm going to have to go with power metal since "Alestorm are a power/folk metal band from Perth, Scotland" and power sounds radder than folk.

I still need help understanding the difference between Power Metal and Symphonic Metal. Which one is Helloween?

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Monday, 21 September 2009 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

Helloween is power metal. Symphonic metal is really heavy on the orchestral arrangements & such, like Therion and Epica.

A. Begrand, Monday, 21 September 2009 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, OK. I sort of thought the 'Symphonic' was meant to denote a massive, striding sound, rather than, er, the actual use of symphonic instruments. Don't know how I got that notion.

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Monday, 21 September 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

Well, stylistically there's not much difference between power and symphonic, so that kind of confusion is understandable.

man I love three of those five bands & think disembowelment is all-time but you do actually see the point of sarahel's (facetious? dunno, I am not good w/"I was saying that to garner response not 'cause i meant it" scenarios) remark right - I think doom is beloved by a lotta indie rock ppl who can't get down with a lot of other metal subgenres for a variety of reasons (conversely tho I don't know anybody who loves lots of other kinds of metal who won't also rep for st. vitus & candlemass, I mean c'mon)

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if there are any bands that can hold a candle to maiden.

I've been a metalhead for 20 years, but can't stand maiden. too much galloping and warbling, not enough CRUSHING.

yes, I know, burn the heretic, etc.

m the g, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

xpost: "beloved by a lotta indie rock ppl who can't get down with a lot of other metal subgenres for a variety of reasons"

What reasons? I don't have particularly strong feelings on this, I'm just curious as to why indie rockers should go for what, on the face of it, isn't the most accessible of subgenres. There are certainly much more song-based flavours up there.

(Much amused by the 2:1 Death/Black result, given the epic battle on the previous thread.)

Soukesian, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

I am a metal dilettante but doom = no way my favorite type of Metal. Have tried 6 or 7 of the most oft-cited doom acts; too much of it's just plain boring and makes me wanna put on Sabbath instead.

Now PROTO-doom is another matter <3 <3 <3

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

I guess logic would dictate that the pace of doom, or at least the trad Sabbathian stuff, would chime with indie rockers a bunch more than death or thrash would given that there isn't really any indie rock that's played at that speed. Thing is I've never actually seen evidence that this bears itself out... unleeeeeeess we are putting like Isis and Palican under the doom umbrella in which case I shouldn't be wearing this hat anymore

To be fair, their new singer does look like an overaged pr0nstar. Which is awesome, off course.

Thijs, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

and their "new" singer comes from one of the finest doom bands in America.

Most people who dislike Candlemass are because of Messiah's vocals anyway. Same with Cathedral.

people dislike cathedral vocals?? surely the craziest strawmen of all.

original bgm, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

and their "new" singer comes from one of the finest doom bands in America.

I know, but that doesn't make him look any less like Ron Jeremy now does it.

Btw, I don't think I have ever disliked a metal band just because of the vocals, or the drums for that matter. As long as the riffs are good I really couldn't care less about either. It's a real shame so many non-metalheads keep focusing on the 'ridiculous' vocals all the time.

xp

Where do you guys live that doom metal is a crossover genre? Where I live, which is New England and the Internet, non-metal people like Mastodon.

Also, surely Dio's existence makes it moot to pick on the appearance of any other band's singer.

I love Solitude Aeturnus and I prefer Rob's singing to Messiah's. But we all know that Johann Landquist on Epicus Doomicus... is the best singer Candlemass ever had.

I do think some classic doom is an easier thing for non-metal folks to hear because in the olden days, doom singers used to be able to sing. The whole stoner rock crossover and Rise Above resurgence in the late 90s fucked that up though.

Now you just have to be able to tune down and buy Orange/Green/White/Black/Matamp stacks.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

epicus doomicus is a stone-cold classic. since number of the beast just finished, I think I'm gonna listen RIGHT NOW. (loving this thread.)

original bgm, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

epicus is easily the best candlemass. I can stomach messiahs vocals for 1 album at a time. Cathedral i find very hard to listen to at times due to Lee,but the band I just cant stomach due to bad vocals are Clutch (apart from the 1st album which i played to death at the time but as they changed their sound the vocals just didn't fit with me)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

mind you i used to dislike john garcia's vocals in Kyuss (a comon complaint amongst some fans actually) til i heard Unida and i totally love the guys vocals now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

I love Solitude Aeturnus and I prefer Rob's singing to Messiah's. But we all know that Johann Landquist on Epicus Doomicus... is the best singer Candlemass ever had.

Thijs, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

I never thought of Lee Dorrian's vox as that likely to be offputting but YMMV etc. Dunno who on here has heard them but the singer from The Lamp Of Thoth had me lolling too much for me to get into them - they play solid trad doom but he sounds like he should be narrating a Children's BBC programme from the mid 80s

hah, I love the vox on all of these controversial "c" bands (candlemass, cathedral, clutch) but was never really down with kyuss vox.

original bgm, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Guys the only Candlemass i have is Nightfall, is it representative?

(like it quite a bit actually)

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

alan do you like Unida?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

never heard any unida.

original bgm, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

and I'd say nightfall is unmistakeably candlemass but it's also their most unique album. that 80s production (with the super, SUPER gated drums) gives it a different vibe than the rest.

original bgm, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

Jon, DEFINITELY pick up Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. And if you like Nightfall, you'll find Ancient Dreams and the self-titled to be cut from the same cloth (albeit with worse and much better productions, respectively). That purple live cd from 1991 is also excellent.

I also am a big fan of their lost record Dactylic Glomerata, but would only recommend it to obsessive fans as it's a totally different beast (and in my top 5 Candlemass).

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

BTW, never liked Clutch vocals. Never liked Kyuss vocals (especially when I saw them in '92--hated Garcia). But yes, it totally worked with Unida.

As for Cathedral, I can only really handle Forest of Equilibrium (a personal fave and doom metal pinnacle); and this has everything to do with Lee's vox getting cornier with each release.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

But we all know that Johann Landquist on Epicus Doomicus... is the best singer Candlemass ever had.

i've never seen anyone even try to argue this.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 30 September 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

Hmm I guess I was kinda fucking up on the nomenclature upthread-- I do like a lot of doom, but more the medium-plodding, wailing, eventful kind like that Candlemass album. It's the super-glacial borderline ambient stuff that bores me.

We're gonna destroy their van, we're gonna destroy their faces (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 30 September 2009 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

If you like trad doom, you should also check out Through The Darkest Hour by Solitude Aeturnus, any of the first 4 Trouble albums, and the strangely neglected masterpiece that is Witchunter Tales by Thunderstorm.
