yeah, the drone-on music group (to which I am a subscriber) were discussing this a little bit.

As i recall (I delelted the emails) Matt was writing a music column for some LA paper back in the 80s. He is a fan of Beefheart (a doc on BBC2 had some excellent stuff from him on the recs, his reaction to playing trout mask for the first time kinda mirrowed mine), Residents, Zappa, all sorts apparently (though he sold a lot of it, as someone was saying, and was just listening to Dub reggae! but again, its 12 am and my brain is tired).

But yeah, he is the first non-musician to curate it but I haven't heard of any acts yet.

I suppose you can expect Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, at least..

The reissue of 'Blind Man's Penis' by John Trubee has sleevenotes by Matt Groening - and he also drew the cover for the 'Crazy Backwards Alphabet' alb by Henry Kaiser, John French and pals.

Andrew L, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha henry kaiser even JULIO cannot like him surely?

mark s, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Mark you are wrong and I am right. Henry Kaiser is very good. If you stopped listening to that Beatles fucking shit perhaps you would understand.

Andrew L, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i shall set your hair on fire andrew

mark s, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark- I got a guitar solo alb by him and I sold it backa couple of weeks later. Now that was post derek bailey bollocks!

But i understand he is prolific so taht might have been a bad rec.

St you're both wrong and only I am right.

''If you stopped listening to that Beatles fucking shit perhaps you would understand.''

Sean did indeed play me some bits of 'Revolver' when I went to his place for a 'listening session'. It's all right but all of the Beatles is all right. I must conclude that likeing the Beatles tells you more abt your age than anything else.

haha mark s is an old bugger.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK i haven't heard all of the beatles. Just bits of revolver and the white alb.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio - do you like satire?

Andrew L, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, OK. I have just woken up here (so that's my excuse)!

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah give the grad student a break, getting up at noon is hard work.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

matt groening had a column in the la reader around '80. two thirds of his reviews were on-u sound and related stuff and the rest dealt with beefheart/zappa-type things. i am hoping for the pop group to headline with maffia and rip rig opening, plus a magic band reunion.

dan, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

noodles-I got up at 8am and I posted at 9:30 am, when I wasn't switched on.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah, I could never find any of our grad students up before 12. OKay we only had two but it extends to Dal and UNB, over earger Laywers and engs aside.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not that i have much choice in the matter. my supervisor might kill me if i ever woke up that late.

JUlio Desouza, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Your prof is up? Yikes, must be one of those keeners UofT shell out the big bucks for.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Count yourselves lucky that Bleeding Gums Murphy is dead, that's all I can say.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How many bands have appeared on the Simpsons? Ramones, REM, Arrowsmith, B-Sharps, Sonic Youth, Peter Frampton, Cyprus Hill, Smashing Pumpkins, a Beatle and his protoBez of a wife and who else?

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yoko ono was barney's wife on the B-sharps episode.

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, Matt Groening and music. I do like him.

Some day I could see myself listening to nothing but dub (real reggae- based dub, not electronica dub).

Mark S, based on the "Lemon Fish Tweezer" collection, I think Henry Kaiser is quite good. Unjustly neglected, and so forth. I have heard some bad things by him, however, including some kind of Grateful Dead cover album.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not only a beatle but the beatles. Remember whe lisa goes to the dentist and she is gassed: she has that psychedelic dream. Michael jackson did the vocals on an episode. U2 has appeared.Tom Jones as well. The guy who sang 'moon river' (don't know name).

A reference to dexy's and the midnight runners on the B-sharps episode as well.

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''based on the "Lemon Fish Tweezer" collection, I think Henry Kaiser is quite good.''

That's the record of his i heard deraymi. I never thought it held very well.

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 19 November 2009 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

that looks pretty dope. super let down by the first additions to the pavement atp tho. the line up doesn't have to be the sum of yr influences dudes.

ennui soundsystem, Thursday, 19 November 2009 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

david cam'ron (tpp), Thursday, 19 November 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

Not that I'm going as it stands but Endless Boogie playing the Pavement thing counts for a lot in terms of my goodwill
