gotta be theo's

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

when i first saw this on spotify i was o_O and then :D when it seemed that each remix was based on more or less each different phase of the original in order. can't say i prefer any of them to the original bits really but the parrish one is simultaneously the funkiest and weirdest of the bunch no?

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

voted for Padded Cell because it best utilizes that freaked out space voyage spoken bit.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

theo might be the weirdest, but pilooski is pretty weird. maybe not the funkiest. prins thomas is pretty funky too. and what about trus'me and prince language, the secret weapons of the bunch?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

is the vocal sample in the pilooski remix saying "new york, suck my french"?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 23 September 2009 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

"do you accept our friendship"

Still haven't heard these yet- who gets the segment that starts about 23 minutes in (with the "when you're out in space, you feel so good" vocals)?

prins thomas, theo parrish and trus'me all take a crack at it

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 24 September 2009 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

The Macallan 18 Year, Thursday, 24 September 2009 04:52 (fifteen years ago)

*except where's tensnake/classixxx/holyghost! for the youth demo??

The Macallan 18 Year, Thursday, 24 September 2009 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

^didn't they originally commission these a few years back? not sure it's too representative of 2009 or anything, but they're all great producers regardless

the theo one seems to be missing something, even tho it is the weirdest of the bunch. gotta be padded cell or prins thomas for me

Theo P was calling this segment "Lies" in some of his tracklistings.

i feel like the Riley Reinhold remix is pretty underrated (going solely off conversations with friends & geeks at record store). It's a really tight production for a spacey piece; i love it. Still, my vote will probably go to Prins Thomas because it's the best of the more vocal mixes imo & the one i've spun more than any other. Also very fond of Runaway's take which is vaguely Theo-ish to my ears.

I am surprised that not one of these remixers used the giant lead bassline from the original track. It might be hiding in the Parrish remix.

- Runaway: cool dj tool house, manages to encapsulate the original track into a slightly anonymous 4/4 workout, nice
- Prince Language: seriously good male diva piano house
- Prins Thomas: wobbly chugging kraut-disco edit, probably the most classic/listenable of the bunch. "Adult Oriented Rock"
- Theo Parrish: structurally and sonically riveting. I love the interplay between light and heavy and between wireframe-y structure and jazzy improv.
- Trus'me: rootsy disorienting deep house
- Padded Cell: this one's just here so you remember how funny the monologue really is
- Pilooski: an electro remix in the style of Robotnik, probably the most literal of the batch in terms of interpreting the outer space content in the monologue
- Riley Reinhold: what sounds like extremely linear, pretty and floaty tech-house reveals itself to be approaching instability on a close listen. I am reminded of the Baby Ford remix of "Revelee" though the two are quite different sonically.

nice breakdown!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 27 September 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

i especially like the extra echo and the extra synth line on the prince language mix

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 27 September 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

yup, the arpeggio is a nice touch.

There's a track on the new Vladislav Delay album (second song on side B) that is very much in the vein of the Parrish remix. Very pleasantly surprised by that, although I shouldn't have been given Vertical Ascent.
