I love these guys. Rock Cottage is the only thing I'd heard from them before now, but their other stuff is really really good! Full of weird noises and awesome vamps and just all manner of crap. God I suck at describing music. Hiss is really, really great.

"Foreigners with bad hick accents growling, "Hmmm, hot sausage..." says the Wikipedia bio, quoting from my Village Voice review of Benson Burner.
The album was kind of packaged as a satire of American white trash hard rock but the joke was lost here. They weren't quite good enough to get a buzz going even though they were recommended in the NY Times.
They had a song about sucking teen knockers and enjoying Thai ladyboys called "Tits." Shouting "Cock . . . holiday! Cock . . . holiday!" does nothing for your chances in the US, particularly when you're ironically pitched to a hard rock crowd.
"Under Heavy Riffage" was the best tune on the record. It also had the least lyrics, being just the title.
"I Am the Robot Tourist" was a poor man's B-52s. Not bad but not great.

?? "Robot Tourist" sounds 0 like the B-52s!
I didn't realize these songs were ironic, either, I just thought they were fun.

I'm surprised anybody can pick up an accent in Rock Cottage, either..

"Magical Moon" is like a cross between Syd Barrett and The Velvet Underground. Until the fracking crazy SOUND comes in halfway through.

'Rock Cottage' is delivered in a sort of northern English accent as I recall.
At their best they reminded me of Railroad Jerk

Northern accent?? There's like 5 words in the whole song! It sounds American to me (and I'm American)
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 27 July 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)
So maybe it's a Northern soul accent! (And they sure sounded a lot more like hard rock than like Railroad Jerk to my ears.)

No, you're right. Ignore me. I might have been thinking of another of their songs. Nah, I liked the self-aware hard rock stuff, built-in obsolescence and all, but they first came out about 1997/98 over here and were a lot more sort of stripped-down messy rockabilly then. I was really into 'One Track Mind' by Railroad Jerk at the time and Ten Benson live was the closest thing I'd heard to that
