Perhaps because of my own skewed view on what writing about music actually is, I find the refresshingly enthusiastic reviews on Amazon enjoyable reading.

I not convinced their is a direct causal relationship between reading reviews and a listeners response, but there is one between reading and purchasing decisions. Amazons in house writers are mostly awful, but the users comments I like a lot.

Anybody spotted any especially interesting ones? Make sure you say if its .co.uk or .com

erm, I did mean music reviews, but you really have to admit "I found the storyline of the book to be very good. It was a great story about what happens along his way and the people he meets" manages to capture the essential core of Conrads work.

I quite like a lot of the .com David Hasselhoff reviews, though some of them are just too obviously spoofs.

There is a review of a Be Bop Deluxe album on amazon somewhere that says something like 'I like this record so much I know most of the words'. Isn't that just a fantastic comment?

Sigur Rós' Ágætis Byrjun is quite possibly the most gorgeous,
impeccably produced album I have heard all year. With their latest,
the Icelandic quartet has released one of the most potent packages of
orchestral sound in recent memory.

And I hate every minute of it...

Review posted on Amazon.com for Toni Morrison’s ‘The Bluest Eye’

Reviewer: gsundar from Wichita, Kansas

'I have not read this book, and tell you the truth I have not read any books since I was forced to back in high school. And yet, Toni Morrison is my favorite writer. Oprah Winfrey talked about this book on her show a few weeks ago and it just made me cry. I don’t remember what she said about it- maybe something about some girl who had real blue eyes, but she was black or something, and Oprah started crying. And I just couldn’t stop crying. Hence, this book has made a deep and lasting impression on my life, even though I will probably never read it. I think every woman, black and white, needs to read this powerful book by Toni Morrison.'

On the subject of Amazon, have you noticed that they hardly stock any CDs now? It's all Limited availability & Special Purchase.

South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut, reviewed by Yi-Peng from Singapore:

What a disgusting CD! This is a horrible CD with nothing but bad words on every track. My system of good values would never accept such trash, such twaddle, and such filth. There is a song that has the F word on every line, and worse still the female B word. If I had the chance, I would definitely NOT buy this CD at all and I would give this a zero-star rating.

First thing I looked for were Fugazi reviews, seeing as how their fans seem the most prone to... "entertaining" comments. I was not disappointed:

"In my opinion, anyone who tries out Fugazi even once is doing themselves and the music industry a service... Any adventurous music listener who gives a damn about ethics will give these guys a try."
"Fugazi were (are) by far the best band of the 90s. Don't just buy this album- BUY EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIRS. I can guarantee that their albums will forever become among your favorites. I got hooked in 93, and I still love them. But do yourself a favour- don't buy them on amazon or in a store. Buy them from the label, www.dischord.com, as their cds are postpaid and much cheaper."

The reviews of 13 Songs are even more... enthusiastic. I swear these peoples' evangelical fervor scares me a little.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Said 13 Songs page also features possibly the ONLY negative review of Fugazi ever published in the history of all print and internet media, by some kid named Tylan who also gives the dumbest review of the Stooges' Fun House this side of Jul- no I won't say it.

There's Henry Raddick, although his reviews are mostly of books - there are a few CD/movie reviews though. He used to have some Listmania lists, but it appears that they have been removed. My favorite: "Bands whose keyboard players slept with my ex-girlfriend."

IMDB has user reviews too, which are often a source of more entertainment than the film. Here is a favourite, about the movie Best Men:

"The best way I can sum it up is a cross between a David Mamet movie and Starship Troopers. Here is why... There are two kinds of people. The people who understood STARTSHIP TROOPERS, and those who didn't. These are people who looked at the superficial exterior and then stopped there, failing to see the true brilliance of the satire and the other fascinating qualities it had to offer. These are the kind of people who look at the sand on the beach, and see only dry sand. They then assume that all the sand is dry, even though it is wet just below the surface.

"Best men is like Mamet in that the dialogue is not the way real people talk, but is stylized, much like Shakespeare stylized his. The way shakespeare wrote was far from the way people talked back then. BEST MEN actually has close ties to shakespeare, as his work plays a major part in the plot. The film is in a way a tribute to shakespeare and his work. The script is in my opinion one of the best and most layered scripts I have ever seen or heared. Unfortunately I don't know if most people will realize how good it really is. The acting is acceptable for the most part. The only really great performances are turned in by Dean Kane, and Brad Dourif (who is one of my very favorite character actors.

"If you are going to see this movie, I would recommend seeing it with a completely open mind, have no pre-notions of what it will be, because you won't get what you are expecting. I didn't, I expected a Drew Barrymore movie, but she actually has a rather small role, but I good one.

"- Chaim Dauermann"

He's right about Brad Dourif, anyway.

Thank you so much for Raddick's reviews!!!
His review of the book: 'God, Why Did Dad Lose His Job?' goes as follows: A truly wonderful guide which has enabled me to explain my recent sacking for vandalising company property to my children in terms of a minor act of redemption. First rate.

A Kid's Review
I heard this album on my best friend's older-sister's stereo. She was playing it so loud we could hear it from ANOTHER ROOM! So we heard it and it was good. And, we yelled "Who is that person playing?" And Brian's older sister said its you guys. We thought it was a funny name at first, buy then I found out later how it was spelled.

I just think it's a funny little story. I always remember this when I listen to Gaze.

This music is so stupid and weird not in a good unique way but just an uncomfortable way like when you are at someone's house and you don't like them and want to go home but you can't and you probably have to spend the night in their living room....really really crappy don't do this to yourself forget this crap and this stupid type of music

A new definition for "terrible", December 31, 2003
Reviewer: L. Eccel "Kovier" (Sacramento, California) - See all my reviews
Oh dear Jesus. This has to be one of the worst albums every recorded in the history of time. It sounds like a bunch of badly recorded noies thrown together with lyrics no one can comprehend. How they get off selling this for $11 boggles the mind. This seems like the kind of music you'd find in a nickel cassette bin at a car wash.
If you have any taste in anything whatsoever do not buy this cd. Even buying it as a joke encourages them to make more terrible music of this nature. Or not, seeing as how they've done absolutley nothing for the last ten years.

Very jumbled over-layered fuz., July 8, 2004
Reviewer: A music fan
So amny people love this album but I think it's one of the most over rated albums ever.
Take a guitar, turn the reverb and volume all the way up and let it go over the vocals and you have this album.
Can't understand a single thing that is "sung" and the music sounds like it was recorded on a tape recorder that the batteries were about dead in.
Almost ever song sounds alike.
Sorry, but I think this album stinks.

All Hype, September 7, 2006
Reviewer: Robert J. Bruce (Angola, New York United States) - See all my reviews
I bought this album because I am so into Sigur Ros at the moment and it seems all the reviews I read say that "...if you like Sigur Ros you will like MBV.." Let me say this album is no where near a Sigur Ros experience. If I could compare them to anyone it would be very early Cocteau Twins , though I must be clear I don't think the singer is anywhere close to the artistic sense and vocal talent of Elizabeth Fraser.
It would be more palatable if the production value was higher....it sounds terrible. The sound quality is comparable to some old VHS tapes I have from the mid 80's that I recorded off the TV ( Then soaked in water for a few days!) .

An Amazon UK customer review of Free's Heartbreaker:

For adults who want to listen drinker it, 19 April 2006
Reviewer: mm (Mars) - See all my reviews
Because FREE has a peculiar charm to any album, the best album of the fan seems to be strong in my favorite album to give whole mind, and to be more different by each person.
It was different from the studio board, and felt fifth work as shifted to giving of the oneness of heat and the band the thickness to the sound from felt live board and tune making, etc. the fourth work that can be visited the third work that comes into view and confidence and room to the tune making the first overflowing work, the second experimental work, and directionality to the tune making the ambition and young
The ambition and zeal were passed, and I feel a big charm in this work where even a calm, solemn atmosphere is felt now though I hesitate very much in the fourth work "Highway" and this work.
Any tune becomes very good feelings if it listens though is a drinker because the part of rust starts appealing dramatically to the emotion it.
