This album is one of the funniest things I've ever heard, especially the contrast between the perfect female backing vocalists and Dylan's croak. It sounds like it's all he can do to keep it together and not crack up laughing. Next stop: Bob Dylan kids record!

Here's "Must Be Santa": http://pitchfork.com/news/36800-hear-bob-dylans-must-be-santa/
So so so amazing. The best part is the completely arbitrary listing of Presidents' names that comes at the end.
― kshighway1, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 04:33 (fifteen years ago)
Idiot David Hepworth on radio 4 is squirming away, verbosely and flamboyantly trying to avoid saying this album is awful. the clips they played were dreadful, embarrasing.
― mu-mu (Pashmina), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 07:56 (fifteen years ago)
Is there a rendition of "Groove is in the heart" with the word Christmas in it?
Nothing else matters...
― Mark G, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 08:30 (fifteen years ago)
I love (hate) the Lawrence Welk-y arrangements. Instant kitsch. Doesn't make it any good, but its egregiousness is perversely admirable.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:23 (fifteen years ago)
Heard this leak last night when I was drink and silly and it was a wonderful and funny experience! I think those are the ideal listening conditions....
― Adam Bruneau, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 15:29 (fifteen years ago)
drink = drunk obv
I actually collapsed on the bed in full-on hysterics when they played excerpts on Radio 4 this morning. Thanks for brightening my day, Bob!

they didn't help him by preceding his carols with versions by the king's college choir.

― headroom (max) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 16:10 (fifteen years ago)
wow, "Must Be Santa" is great, kinda like the Pogues! I'm going to be singing this all the time, I can tell.
― Euler, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago)
shockingly I love this album but I'd be cautious who I played it for, because his singing here is kinda like hoppy beer or stinky cheese...not to everyone's taste I think.
― Euler, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 19:24 (fifteen years ago)
This is really beautiful. I love how old it sounds, everything on it sounds like it was recorded in the 60s (except Bob) especially the backing vocal arrangements!
― Adam Bruneau, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
He's so natural he clears his throat while he sings. I'd say it'd make a funny SNL skit, but it's TOO funny for an SNL skit.
What happened to the old thread on this? I tried searching Dylan, Christmas album and only this one came up. Really liked some of the suggested album titles. Much better than the Dee-Lite inspired title, as mentioned upthread.

Yep.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
Just heard "Must Be Santa" yesterday. Bob borrowed/stole the ENTIRE arrangement from Brave Combo's 1991 holiday album "It's Christmas, Man!" and I don't believe BC were credited. Are arrangements not copyrightable?

Yeah, really. Dave Van Ronk and a bunch of others say hello.

must be santa is kinda great imo, will def be adding this to the list of xmas cds at work when we inevitable have one lol
― plaques (I know, right?), Saturday, 7 November 2009 15:18 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think arrangements of popular music are copyrightable.
― I've got some funny ideas about what sounds good (staggerlee), Saturday, 7 November 2009 17:17 (fifteen years ago)
i'd be surprised if there wasn't a pretty direct connection from Dylan's touring band to Brave Combo. Lotsa Texas type dudes in there.
― tylerw, Saturday, 7 November 2009 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
Apparently the guys in Bravo Combo are cool with this: http://www.brave.com/bo/wordpress/?p=386
― Euler, Saturday, 7 November 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)
That's good. I'm hopeful that Muddy Waters will soon post that he's happy for Dylan to claim credit for Rollin' and Tumblin'
― Duke, Saturday, 7 November 2009 22:59 (fifteen years ago)
Ignoring the snarkiness upthread, after Christmas dinner and primed with a few glasses of wine this is perfect comfort listening.

This seems to be the Brave Combo link that's broken upthread:

― warn me about a lurking rake (One Eye Open), Thursday, 26 December 2019 05:46 (five years ago)
Saw Low do a Christmas show a couple weeks back and they used this for the house music before and after and during intermission. Made me very happy.
― by the light of the burning Citroën, Thursday, 26 December 2019 14:45 (five years ago)
Dylan’s voice works as kind of the anti-Pentatonix of Christmas standards. Also glad he brought in The Ditty Bops.
― ... (Eazy), Thursday, 26 December 2019 20:22 (five years ago)
This year was the first time we made it to the last track.
Not a reflection of the quality, more that we'd swap it for something else usually.
― Mark G, Thursday, 26 December 2019 22:45 (five years ago)
this album is great but i wish it included his recitation of "twas the night before christmas" from his radio show
