I think the correct answer to this question involves the structural integrity of the clothes in question, how much flesh they are meant to cover, and whether or not the band members actually bought the clothes directly or had them especially made.

You've obviously never been to San Francisco Gay Pride, mark.
I've always hated Mike Watt's "flying the flannel" grunge realness schtick. Nice guy and fab bass player, but I can't stand the look.
As for Husker Du, Greg Norton always looked quite dashing with his Snidely Whiplash 'stache, but then he wasn't the gay one. He just looked like the gay one.
How about the Allman Brothers? They looked horrible on the cover of Live at Fillmore East, but maybe it's cause I LOATHE pictures of rock bands laughing, especially when they're used as album covers. I'm sure Marshall Tucker dressed worse. Wasn't there some band that all wore dusters? Well, at least they were making an effort.
And I think Ozzy looks great on the cover of Sabotage, Alex, that caftan and platforms combo is awesome!

And at first, I thought the Jon Anderson pic was Robert Plant.

Springsteen in the early nineties, Human Touch era, when he started dressing like Crocodile Dundee. What a nightmare.

Journey. The more they tried to look cool, the more they cleared new trails into previously unexplored realms of dorkdom (see eg, their video for Separate Ways). It's astounding, in its own way.
