you'd think husker du, but they made looking schlubby an art form and did wonders dispelling the "thin & neat" gay stereotype so no dice there...

it's obv. pearl jam for the doc martens n longunderwear n shorts n rasta hat from belize, but that's such a boring answer. the jam looked pretty shit, especially at the beginning, when the drummer had a neckwarmer hairdo and their suits looked borrowed from their uncles.

The Smashing Pumpkins post-1995 looked pretty dreadful

c'mon, it's picture time. where's the evidence?

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the evidence speaks for itself.....

Pumpkins post-1995 = goth = wonderful! Yay!

I think the correct answer to this question involves the structural integrity of the clothes in question, how much flesh they are meant to cover, and whether or not the band members actually bought the clothes directly or had them especially made.

Most male singers just don't look very good in leathertrousers. look at keiji haino in this months wire. He should wear black Jeans. Mark E smith is bloody awful as well.

american bands, in general, have little concern for their appearance which is disappointing and they seem to be exporting their lack of fashion sense.

keith, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wot? americans exporting their slovenly culture to britain! horrors! how long has this been going on?! (it's payback for giving north america that naked chef character)

fritz, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

naked can never be slovenly

mark s, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Levellers/Mega City 4/Thousand Yard Stare/Senseless Things...
any fraggle/crusty combo basically. And the hair... !

DavidM, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my unconditional adoration of the Posies is always tempered a bit when i see their early 90's photos, esp. the back cover of Dear 23. although the spiky-hair leather-jacket late 80's Failure foto is classic, whether it's a goof or not (i'm really not sure).

You've obviously never been to San Francisco Gay Pride, mark.

I've always hated Mike Watt's "flying the flannel" grunge realness schtick. Nice guy and fab bass player, but I can't stand the look.

As for Husker Du, Greg Norton always looked quite dashing with his Snidely Whiplash 'stache, but then he wasn't the gay one. He just looked like the gay one.

How about the Allman Brothers? They looked horrible on the cover of Live at Fillmore East, but maybe it's cause I LOATHE pictures of rock bands laughing, especially when they're used as album covers. I'm sure Marshall Tucker dressed worse. Wasn't there some band that all wore dusters? Well, at least they were making an effort.

And I think Ozzy looks great on the cover of Sabotage, Alex, that caftan and platforms combo is awesome!

i think chris squires boots are sessy

chaki, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that, by default, just about anything 1970-1977 could go here.

And at first, I thought the Jon Anderson pic was Robert Plant.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha HA I just remembered thee Spandau Ballet "checkered teatowels & blouses" look. An easy winner for me.

Norman Phay, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about late 80's hip hop acts with that cross colors look

chaki, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Springsteen in the early nineties, Human Touch era, when he started dressing like Crocodile Dundee. What a nightmare.

Journey. The more they tried to look cool, the more they cleared new trails into previously unexplored realms of dorkdom (see eg, their video for Separate Ways). It's astounding, in its own way.
