Beatles: Best of the Remasters

We need another Beatles poll! Choose your favorite reissue — stereo or mono. This isn't necessarily your favorite Beatles album, but the one that enjoyed the biggest improvement in sound and packaging. There's a mono mix of Yellow Submarine out there, but I've included only the ones represented in the box set.

voted White - even though it's far from a fave for me - i like about half, but the great parts sound incredible. plus i'd add that i think "sexy sadie" puts me in the mind of early-1970's T. Rex.

outdoor_miner, Friday, 25 September 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

And Karma Police.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 25 September 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

Went for "Beatles For Sale" stereo, which sounds surprisingly much better now than it used to.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 25 September 2009 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

Kind of tough, since I'd already heard tons of good vinyl copies of a lot of them. I'll still go with Pepper mono as the one that's likely to change the most (non Norwegian) minds.

dlp9001, Friday, 25 September 2009 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

My parents owned the mono of Sgt. Pepper so that's how I first learned to know the album. Still sounds better in stereo though. MUCH better.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

Revolver mono. LOADS of stuff on there that isn't on the stereo. Cowbell all over Taxman!

nate woolls, Friday, 2 October 2009 11:58 (fifteen years ago)

I've got no love for the monos, really - I have a big hi-fi and poncey headphones, and the stereo sounds way better to me. Presumably how I'm used to hearing music is a big factor in that.

But yes... big increases in listening pleasure especially from AHDN, MMT, and white album.

greenhorn choice. it's faust arp. always has been, always will be, so help me god.

history mayne, Friday, 2 October 2009 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

I'm saying MMT. The sound quality is tremendous (John's vocal on "Walrus" on headphones now....holy crap!) but I'm also glad to see so much support for an album I loved when I was a kid but always got horrible reviews.

Adam Bruneau, Friday, 2 October 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

it's not an album.

history mayne, Friday, 2 October 2009 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

yay, I just bought it (but regarding "walrus", it was already on "love" so I don't expect a big surprise).
I'm realy looking forward to hearing "penny lane".

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 2 October 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

Penny Lane is mad revelatory.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 2 October 2009 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

i really dig the enhanced sound on "Blue Jay Way" myself.

I'm in the US and it was always an album over here.

nah, it's a pork-chop. always has been.

It's a floor wax dessert topping.

Alex Quebec (WmC), Friday, 2 October 2009 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

Revolver mono. LOADS of stuff on there that isn't on the stereo. Cowbell all over Taxman!

I love the 909 beat on the mono version of "Got To Get You Into My Life". And the JFK samples on the mono "I'm Only Sleeping".

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 2 October 2009 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

Mono SPLHCB

iago g., Saturday, 3 October 2009 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

The cowbell is all over Taxman in the right channel on the stereo.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 3 October 2009 08:16 (fifteen years ago)

It's a floor wax AND a dessert topping.

that is a good memory :)

Nate Carson, Saturday, 3 October 2009 08:48 (fifteen years ago)

I hate the sound seperation and am glad to be rid of it with the mono set. I'm still surprised that it's the stereo versions that are the main release, the monos being the definitive versions.

DavidM, Saturday, 3 October 2009 09:18 (fifteen years ago)

Tells you something, doesn't it?

Nate Carson, Saturday, 3 October 2009 09:20 (fifteen years ago)

Has the stereo Revolver got the extra bit of backwards guitar on I'm Only Sleeping?

nate woolls, Saturday, 3 October 2009 09:27 (fifteen years ago)

Sound is supposed to be separated.

Bob Six, Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

the monos being the definitive versions.

waaaaht

idk, my mum saw the beatles in '63 and she has their stuff in stereo, BUT I GUESS THAT ISN'T DEFINITIVE.

history mayne, Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

There is no definitive; there's only what you prefer.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 3 October 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

once again it's bullshit the way they have done these releases. they could have done big editions of each album with accompanying singles + anthology material + mono mix. there's a thing in private eye saying that sales have not been overwhelming.

history mayne, Saturday, 3 October 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

^and vinyl.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 October 2009 06:40 (fifteen years ago)

I always remember this as sounding fine, probably the first of the 'decent' stereo mixes, back in the day...

Mark G, Monday, 5 October 2009 07:07 (fifteen years ago)

once again it's bullshit the way they have done these releases.

I think they could have offered a stereo and mono mix, but the main thing I hate is the cardboard sleeve which I suspect has already scratched my copies of Help and Sgt Pepper.

Mark G, Friday, 9 October 2009 08:30 (fifteen years ago)

"what kind of weirdass bullshit is this"

i dunno, the beatles and their partners have been fighting over the scraps of apple since before the beatles even broke up, and it's gotten in the way of all kinds of stuff - for instance, michael jackson would never have owned the rights to all the beatles tunes if john and paul hadn't been fighting over who was managing the beatles at a crucial juncture... at least that's how i understand it. and now every time the beatles corp want to do something, they have to get all the remaining band members and widows to agree to it, which i can easily imagine yoko making difficult.

if any beatlepeople have actual details about yoko stickin her nose into the whole remastering thing, i'd be curious to hear them....

messiahwannabe, Friday, 9 October 2009 08:57 (fifteen years ago)

which i can easily imagine yoko making difficult.

Without any evidence at all?

Mark G, Friday, 9 October 2009 09:17 (fifteen years ago)

SHE'S A FREAKY WOMAN AND SHE SPLIT THEM UP = EVIDENCE.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 9 October 2009 09:36 (fifteen years ago)

Dunno if she split them up, but she destroyed John Lennon.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 9 October 2009 10:55 (fifteen years ago)

hum. following the results I may have finished my remasters campaign since there's only "pepper" stereo I'm still considering getting...

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 9 October 2009 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

how did yoko destroy john lennon? she saved john lennon IMO.

john lennon w/ out Yoko = walking around LA drunk heckling the Smothers Brothers

lukevalentine, Friday, 9 October 2009 12:07 (fifteen years ago)

John Lennon without Yoko = Walls and Bridges, and that's alright by me.

Guilty_Boksen, Friday, 9 October 2009 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

how did yoko destroy john lennon? she saved john lennon IMO.

john lennon w/ out Yoko = walking around LA drunk heckling the Smothers Brothers

cosign

after reading like 12 beatles biographies i've come to the conclusion that:

a) john brought yoko into the studio etc just to fuck with the other beatles, it probably wasn't her idea at all
b) lennon's a obviously genius but yoko as a muse/collaborator brought out an interesting side of him, and was part of why he was the most interesting beatle with the coolest songs post-breakup
c) he NEEDED to sit around the apartment raising his son and avoiding the world for 5 years when he did, yoko just grokked that and let him do it

obviously this is just my sideline theories but i think painting yoko as the reason the beatles broke up is way overly simplistic

messiahwannabe, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

ps. i would've given mono masters my vote just on the strength of hearing some good great b-side beatle songs for the first time ever

messiahwannabe, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

I presume that Yoko-pushing-the-brand is responsible for any time you see Lennon described as 'musician and peace activist'. Not a fan of that - does anyone actually think of him this way? My current favourite Lennon is him & Cynthia marooned in Surrey, holed away in a couple of rooms in the roof of their otherwise-unused mansion.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

i suspect most people do, though my impression is the guy was very very far from that in a real life, personal sense (ie. i've read over and over again he was a huge asshole in person, more often than not) anyway i've come to feel like it was a fairly interesting thing to do with the coin of his unbelievably humongous fame if nothing else. i mean he could've just bought a few gold plated cadillacs and retired to the country to die of a herion overdose or whatever, instead of holding wacky bed-ins on his honeymoon and shit

OMG Finally they are releasing a DVD/Blu-Ray of MMT. It will have lots of cool extras in addition to remaster and 5.1 sound. Coming out in October!

finally we will get to see how boring it really was to drive through the english countryside on a bus

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

just release Carnival of Light already Paul

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

He wants to, it was George Harrison saying no.

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

well that problem's solved ennit

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

If only there was an 'experimental' 1967 project that was going to be released and would be in need to extras...

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)

Well, that's just it: Because it got black-balled during the "Anthology" process, it's in danger of becoming the 'last issued Beatles track', and people will go "Oh, it's worse than Rev9"...

Then again, the actual 'last' Beatles track at the moment is "Real Love", which is likeable but definitely on the short-list for "worst"...

Mark G, Thursday, 23 August 2012 06:20 (thirteen years ago)

I like"Real Love" but I consider it more of an ELO song lol

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 August 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

it is!

sneaking Carnival out on the MMT DVD would be the best thing for it, downplaying its significance and whatnot

itt: i forgot that he yells at a butt (sic), Friday, 24 August 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

I think Paul has gotten so much shit for that movie over the years since it first came out that the criticism really got to him. I think he's kind of ashamed of it for being a flop and really it's too bad cos it's a great looking & sounding film with lots of fun genuinely experimental bits and a really charming aimlessness.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 24 August 2012 06:57 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, an appearance as a soundtrack to a DVD extra would be great. Sort of like how that Harrison-produced Remo 4 song that was discovered and snuck on the Wonderwall DVD turned out to be a neat little treasure.
