rethinking 97-01 in light of remembering that the two rappers i hold closest to my heart, t.i. and trina, aren't from that era at all

lex pretend, Saturday, 26 September 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

Also, it the right answer always, "When I started listening to rap"?

Moribund the Burgerphone (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 26 September 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

nuh uh, when i started listening to rap it was because i discovered nwa and public enemy was all "holy shit this sounds way better than anything i've ever heard before!" not sure i'll vote for CLASSIC 90's, though, because since then i have grown to love 00's hip hop more than i ever thought possible.

GOLDEN ERA (1986-1991): P.E., Eric and Ra, Marley, BDP, Kane, Biz, EPMD, De La
CLASSIC '90s (1992-1997): Dre, Biggie, Pac, Nas, Wu, Jigga, Red

one of these, though mostly because of artists not mentioned here

omar little, Saturday, 26 September 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

golden era (which I guess is when I started to seriously pay attention to hip-hop, but as a kid growing up I definitely remember Sugarhill Gang n Run DMC/Beasties/LL etc.)

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 September 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Also, is the right answer always, "When I started listening to rap"?

think this historically is true with lots of genres - the first stuff that was new & kickin when you got into it will be the stuff that burned in hardest. people who get into metal are always blown away by the first newest stuff they hear & they keep real current & develop a real fondness for the stuff that was their scene when it first became their scene.

I started listening to rap in '83 or '84 & voted Golden Era mainly for late Golden Era stuff like the 2nd D.U. album & the 2nd X-Clan album which reminds me can someone please for the love of God find me an affordable copy of the Queen Mother Rage album.

Voted 1972-79 because the world was largely unaware of hip-hop's existence back then. Which was good.

classic 90s, no question. the point where the beats/lyrics had evolved past simple funk loops/barney rubble type rhyme/rhythm schemes, but before the whole culture imploded due to its own weight and became a glossy shell.

Almost feel like voting Golden Age as i've been listening to a ton of PE, Gang Starr & Mac Dre lately but gotta give it to Classic 90s because i could never live without the first two Wu albums & "Shook Ones". Plus Mac Dre killed it during that era too.

Geir, serious question here, name your fuckin price, how much do I have to pay you to shut the fuck up

it would be worth so much to me that my family has been organizing its finances with a view toward eventually purchasing your sweet, sweet silence so no-one ever has to hear you say anything moronic about rap ever ever ever again

I voted for Classic, only because Dj Premier's Crooklyn Cuts and New York Reality Check 101 was the first hip hop I really liked. I still like NY hip hop from the era.

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 27 September 2009 02:29 (fifteen years ago)

Untrue for me.. Up until around 2001 I viewed hiphop as novelty.. Since then I enjoy the most popular stuff between 89-94 as some of my favorite music ever recorded.

I voted Jiggy Era in part because it was when I started listening to hip-hop but the singles from the time were pretty unfuckwithable: 10 Crack Commandments, B.O.B., Snoopy Track, Big Pimpin, Ruff Ryders Anthem, Ante Up, Apollo Kids, Southern Hospitality, Get Crunked Up, Sippin' On Some Syrup, Special Delivery Remix, Bonnie & Shyne etc. etc. etc. etc.
