Good time to say that Free Peace Sweet is actually not bad at all

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Monday, 28 September 2009 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

Yes it is, it's fucking shite.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 28 September 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

As long as Verve don't win I'm happy.

chap, Monday, 28 September 2009 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't put any of those albums on in its entirety today. Or tomorrow.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 28 September 2009 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

Very good: UKRIP

Good: One Of Those Rivers, If You're Thinking Of Me, Homegrown, Long Life, Intro

OK: In A Room, Prey For Drinking, Jack The Lad, Found You, Ain't No Longer Asking, You've Gotta Look Up

Not OK: Trust In Time

Wretched: Good Enough

= actually not bad at all

Harsh but fair.

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

er, was a joke...

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

No, it was a real band, I remember seeing them on Top of the Pops.

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

no laughing matter.

history mayne, Monday, 28 September 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

hey dude, don't lean on me man

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

Bad taste considering all those guys that stuck nails thru their own ear-drums after being exposed to "Hush".

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Wd like to nominate Crispian Mills for the "dude most likely to be arrested in Thailand à la Gary Glitter within the next 10 years" thread btw.

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

btw am I allowed to rep for Hollow Man

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

That Supergrass album is still really good.

nate woolls, Monday, 28 September 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

Manics vs Elastica vs Pulp. I always feel obliged to rep for the Manics in ILX polls, even though it's not Britpop in any meaningful sense.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 28 September 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

I own the Cast album, it was pretty damn fun when it came out.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 28 September 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

only ever heard the elastica and the blur, and the singles off the oasis. i'd say elastica based on that but i won't vote in this godawful poll.

goole, Monday, 28 September 2009 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

oh and the verve, duh. my answer stands tho.

goole, Monday, 28 September 2009 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

I Should Coco is a great album, regardless of what you think of "britpop" as a genre. His'n'Hers is it's only competition in this poll but it sounds a bit dated now and it's always been too long.

everything, Monday, 28 September 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'd agree on both points, but His'n'Hers wins for a) having Lipgloss, Babies, and ...First Time, and more importantly b) not having Alright. Sorry Supergrass, you put four great singles on yr first album but also one shitty one that got played to death and makes me feel ill just thinking about it, you lose.

(but those two + Elastica are the only ones I'd even consider)

^^^
reason enough for 'I should coco' to get my vote.

m the g, Monday, 28 September 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 28 September 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Pulp & Elastica the only contenders for first, Coco a strong third.

edwardo notuomo (sic), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 07:26 (fifteen years ago)

I voted Blur, obv.

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 07:30 (fifteen years ago)

i went with blur. supergrass, pulp and even the verve are not too far behind though.

i'd probably rank the oasis and manic street preachers as my two least favourite albums here. i haven't heard the dodgy, but i did hang out with the guy who drummed for them a few years back, and while he was one of the crudest people i've ever met, he was profoundly entertaining.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 07:57 (fifteen years ago)

elastica. still enjoy hearing all those songs.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

Pulp's best album vs Blur's 2nd-best album = a sliver of choice, but David's Last Summer won it for me...not that I wouldn't go the other way if I'd just heard Yuko & Hiro

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:17 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know how I'm going to vote. I've heard the BLur album the most, but I don't know if it's good enough to vote for. Think I might actually go for the BLuetones - that's a really underrated debut.

dog latin, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

David's Last Summer was the song that I always skipped because I thought it was boring, pretty much every other song on that album was great.

I ♠ my display name (sarahel), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:36 (fifteen years ago)

The Bluetones? Fucking hellfire.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:38 (fifteen years ago)

David's Last Summer was just bits of other unrecorded songs all stuck together, wasn't it?

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:51 (fifteen years ago)

Nick, you like Embrace.

dog latin, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:59 (fifteen years ago)

"Free Peace Sweet" is the best Britpop album ever, and one of the Top 5 albums of the entire 90s.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 09:27 (fifteen years ago)

x-post that's a never-fail zing

jabba hands, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 09:31 (fifteen years ago)

Liking Embrace in a thread in which sentences like "Free Peace Sweet" is the best Britpop album ever, and one of the Top 5 albums of the entire 90s. are being thrown around makes me the smart one. And much as I do like them, I wouldn't make any claims about them being great or underrated.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 09:36 (fifteen years ago)

lol it's cool i like Space

jabba hands, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 09:38 (fifteen years ago)

Nick, you should give the Bluetones (at least that first album) more credit is what I'm saying.

dog latin, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 09:51 (fifteen years ago)

I loved Space at the time. Think I went to see them at the Junction in Cambridge, must've been 15? Octopus were supporting.

dog latin, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 09:52 (fifteen years ago)

Expecting To Fly's not a bad album, at all; it's just so... nondescript. A couple of decent singles and a handful of really good b-sides is all I'll take from them.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 09:54 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

what a surprise

I ♠ my display name (sarahel), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

wd like to change vote to The Great Escape ffs because Pulp will still win and TGE wd at least be free of urban hymns

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

it can be free of urban hymns in our hearts, the poll is over.

I ♠ my display name (sarahel), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

i woulda voted for the verve or the manics

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

men are over
women are over
sheffield is over

urban hymns is a rare example of an album where the massive international smash-hit is both the best and the most interesting piece of music on it

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 23:12 (fifteen years ago)
