Twilight Sad - scottish shoegaze emo

What do y'all reckon? Twilight Sad's sophomore album is out and it's damn good, a really big satisfying sound. Lyrically it's not as immediate as their very wordy debut but I haven't studied them.

first album was great, albeit frontloaded (first three tracks = flat-out brilliant, rest = ok)

this i am excited about

first album way better, this album sounds incoherent to me for some reason, and its not the scottish accent

It's a little loud.

Wonderful band. Lovely people. (Shameless plug: any fans in Scotland might want to buy the Sunday Herald this weekend for an interview with them.)

This one's very different in texture -- no accordion, for a start! -- but even darker in mood. I think I probably prefer the first one, though.

New album out, No One Can Ever Know. Been warned that iTunes and emusic have separate bonus tracks. Frickity frack.

<i>Per Amazon, "As made clear already by widely-spread preview track "Kill It In The Morning" and first single "Sick," The Twilight Sad's third full-length, No One Can Ever Know, marks a sonic shift for the band. Freshly inspired by a listening diet of Cabaret Voltaire, Can, Liars, Magazine, Autechre, and Public Image Limited, the band turn to a dark, synth-heavy sound for No One Can Ever Know; the resulting LP shares thematic and sonic space with the most innovative offerings from Depeche Mode, The Cure, or even Nine Inch Nails."</i>.

Any impressions re: the "sonic shift"?

Listening now, their influences sure do bleed through but it's all kinds of awesome.

Yeah, this. And they just keep getting more dull.

I'll continue to carry their flag. New single "Last January" has a clear Adrian Borland / The Sound vibe: https://soundcloud.com/fatcatrecords/last-january-the-twilight-sad/

I love the first album, feel it's been diminishing returns since, and it doesn't help that this style of stuff is so easy to parody and to do badly:

the night before the first album came out I saw them in Mono, a really small venue in Glasgow. It was incredible, easily one of the best shows I've ever been to in my life. I've seen them four or five times since, mostly supporting other bands, and they've been good-to-great each time, but never as intense as that first time.
