Ted Leo/Pharmacists albums poll

been wanting to do this poll for a while, figured I'd do it now since I was annoying that Hearts of Oak (imo the weakest of these 4) rated highest in the Pitchfork decade list, when their old list for the first half of the decade rightly had just Tyranny in it. not gonna bother making the crappy '99 solo album an option.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Hearts of Oak 15
The Tyranny of Distance 10
Shake the Sheets 2
Living with the Living 0

I was annoying

excuse me, I was annoyed, I'm just starting to get annoying about this

some dude, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

I got love for all of em but I have to go w/ Tyranny.

Simon H., Wednesday, 30 September 2009 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

Are you insane? Hearts of Oak is the best of all of them!

Shake The Sheets

man i never listen to this dude anymore what happened...

tyranny is the best as far as i can remember though the first 3 are all pretty close in quality

Hearts Oak has "Rude Boys" and a couple other great songs, but a terrible bass sound, sloppy performances, and some of the most forgettable songs in his catalog. Both the albums since then have stuck with me a lot more overall.

some dude, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

I mean I understand that it was the album that kind of made the biggest impact and has probably his best known song, but as an album it's subpar.

some dude, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

No way, Hearts of Oak is great. I'd rank 'em like this:

Hearts of Oak
Shake the Sheets
Tyranny
Living

I dunno, man..."The Anointed One," "Dead Voices," "Tell Balgeary, Balgury Is Dead," I almost never have a desire to listen to a lot of those songs

some dude, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe I need to go back and listen again, its been awhile, but I think the sloppiness was part of the charm for me.

It's totally Hearts of Oak for me. "The Annointed One" and "Dead Voices" are actually kind of weak, but every other song is pure gold.

I love all these albums though. I guess the more poppy sound of Hearts is just more to my taste.

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Wednesday, 30 September 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

"Tell Balgeary, Balgury Is Dead" is amazing!

Simon H., Wednesday, 30 September 2009 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

his voice is pretty shot on that record, though.

Simon H., Wednesday, 30 September 2009 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

I may like the Trouble in Treble EP more than any of these though

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Hearts of Oak was like, the last good album I bought because Pitchfork told me to.

Tangent: TS—Chisel or solo/Pharm Leo?

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

oh chisel all the way

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

i may be the only person who feels that way though

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

i gave Chisel a try but it's just not nearly as good to me

hmmmm i would put set you free on par w/any of his best pharmacists stuff, maybe above it. killer album. as far as this one goes, either tyranny or hearts of oak (i don't really see what yr talkin about w/the whole "lack of memorable songs" thing, i haven't listened to that record in maybe three years and i can still hum 70% of it)

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

i really love 8 am all day and would rather listen to it than anything else ted leo has done but i realize that it's like 50% nostalgia and the production is really muddy and so i don't expect anyone else to agree

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm more iffy on that one. love parts of it, though, and "your star is killing me" is my fav thing of his ever

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't say Hearts has a lack of memorable songs per se, just that the 30% that you probably can't still hum is imo the worst stuff on any of these 4 albums.

y'all so wrong

some dude, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

Shake the Sheets 2

*bites lower lip, rolls eyes*

лампа (Lamp), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know if that means you like that record or you don't like it. i think it's really good and underrated, though! nice to have that one especially tight, cleanly produced and relentlessly uptempo album in his catalog, kinda stands out from the rest and fills a different niche.

some dude, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

i like it very much and its the only one of these (i own all of them, somehow) that i ever listen to. just tired and unsurprised

лампа (Lamp), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

me and mia ftw
