have only heard the more famous orchestral works, ie Scheherazade, Capriccio Espagnol, Russian Easter Overture, but they are all pretty classic. anyone know the operas?

Always loved Scheherazade from an early age, but have to say know nothing else. Looking forward to hearing some recommendations.

A couple of Scheherezades to recommend:

The one conducted by Sergiu Celibidache on DG (not EMI): outrageous luxury of timbre.

The classic Ernest Ansermet version: awesome exemplar of vintage late 50s-early 60s stereo orchestral miking, a real golden age of engineers recording orchestras.

If you like Scheherezade you will almost certainly like 'Antar', his other programmatic fantasy-symphony.

I really wanna hear his fairy tale operas sometime.

Also-- for the ultimate heavy-modernist homage to this kind of musical orientalism, you MUST hear Bernard Herrmann's score for The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad.
