I think this is one case where we can safely say "Destroy All of it with extreme prejudice". Dunno, is there a category beyond 'destroy'? The amusing thing is how in the merchandising of the period they mixed pictures of the 'make-up' years in with their ugly bare mugs, 'hinting' that 'this new phase is just as exciting and thrilling as old' when it most clearly...well, can you imagine if 'Lick It Up' was the debut album? Exactly. File with Black'n'Blue and Quiet Riot. I bet they paid the PMRC to cite their 'dirty' lyrics of the time, as nobody else alive can even name a song from any of the albums

Mark S, explain that Julia Lennon theory! I think it fits here

dave q, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in kiss's case julia lennon = diana ross

mark s, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but counter this there's also the slipknot dimension, viz why tour when you wear masks: can't you just use a pick-up band in each town (wearing the masks)?

mark s, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there any evidence they haven't?

dave q, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

JL-theory = "rock" equiv to freud's point, that whenever 2 ppl fuck there are (at least) four othah ppl present, except onstage not in bed, and not parents (necessarily, tho julia is obv) but belief-systems/muses/demon-goads etc.

this is explanation as i know and use it

In any case I still think Peter Criss = 'Julia' as I think Diana R just split after reading Gene's lyric notepad. Who'd want to think that pearls like "When I go through her it's like a hot knife through butter" and "Bend over and let me be the driver" were about THEM?

dave q, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

evidence re slipknot: no
evidence re kiss: er no

"Lick It Up" and "Tears Are Falling" are both nice songs. Can't think of any entire post-makeup KISS albums that are searchable, though.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Crazy, crazy nights" and "God, gave rock'n'roll to ya"

Make-up or not, Kiss stopped making any music of consequence circa DYNASTY.

Dude! "Heaven's on Fire"!

Actually, if you're in need of a good, hearty, derisive laugh, check out Paul Stanley's street-wise rap on "All Hell's Breakin' Loose" off the LICK IT UP album. In the liner notes of last year's Kiss boxset, Stanley had the idiotic audacity to describe the track as one of the first examples of rock/rap crossover. Good lord.

You gotta love a guy hailing from New York (Mr. Stanley) who'd never heard, uh, Blondie's song "Rapture", don't you? Hm, didn't think so.

eleven years pass...

Thirty years ago today, a day of great import

And as Nate Patrin noted on Twitter, not only was it at 11 pm, it was a Sunday night.

Who else here reserved the television for this event? At that late date, we held out hope that MTV would stop sucking.

Make-up, schmake-up. What was truly awful were their un-cool hair and wardrobe. I really liked the song and still do.
