# Vote for the Best Album EVER (from rateyourmusic.com top 50)

A much more correct list, other than the fact that the 00s are a bit underrated here (probably because proper mainstream-ish music from 00s gets too many negative ratings). No filters at all, because filters weren't needed for this list.

Yes, this is a boring list for those who don't respect the canon, and the fact that there is a reason why the canon is the canon.

(This list may be subject to change by voters, but probably less and less change as the years go by)

Didn't they make albums before 1959?

mu-mu (Pashmina), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

They were called "Harmonious Orchestrated Compendiums" and they were only available on 75-inch wide parchment discs so they weren't that popular.

SBana Ng (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't they make albums before 1959?

Yes, they did:
http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/1950s

Rock albums weren't particularly consistent back then though, and most of the albums in the RYM list - like every list otherwise - are "rock" in some way or other.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Sez shitipedia:

"The term "record album" originated from the fact that 78-RPM phonograph disc records were kept in a bound container resembling a photograph album. The first collection of records to be called an "album" was Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, released in April 1909 as a four-disc set by Odeon Records. It retailed for 16 shillings (approximately £56 or US$101 in 2005 currency)."

Which i guess is interesting-ish.

Vaguely annoyed as per usual by boomer critical discourse "best record EVER" meaning best record since the beatles-sorta, but lets throw a couple of miles albums in to show we're "eclectic".

I voted for "Forever changes" it wasn't a particularly difficult choice.

Geir it doesn't say best ROCK album ever! it says best album ever! "The man with the golden arm" soundtrack, from 1955, I think is much better than many of the records listed.

best album ever means it cant exclude other genres, Geir. If you want best rock album ever since the beatles began then you should call your poll exactly that.(or a mod should change it)

I haven't exluded anything. It is RYM who have excluded post 1959 albums. Probably mainly because the number of ratings is too low (and that is a sensible rule, or RYM would have been completely dominated by weird and obscure stuff)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 4 October 2009 11:33 (fifteen years ago)

And the fact that music began with The Beatles. Well, largely it did. Before that, only classical music from before 1900 was worthy of any attention. And maybe the occasional Tin Pan Alley composer in-between. Everything else was rubbish.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 4 October 2009 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

3... maybe 4 bassists, 1 drummer and 2 part-time singers?

It's like women don't exist. Who comes up with these ratings and what perverse all-male universe do they live in?

I feel like a broken record at this point, but seriously...

I'm a hot lady in my bedroom and I need a Lindstrøm (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 4 October 2009 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

Well, the list - other than hard rock being slightly overrepresented - looks like most rankings made by generalist music mags.

Is Joey Santiago from The Pixies the only Asian on the list?

StanM, Sunday, 4 October 2009 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

He may, but maybe this list is based upon with music geeks actually like, not caring about all kinds of quota criteria to make sure the list is as diverse as possible.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 4 October 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

Music geeks don't like asians or ladies then?

Village Green or Enter the Wu?

Those are weird-ass Stones choices.

Looking at these lists, first and foremost they like bands consisting of guys with guitars. Let's not speculate about who they do not like.

StanM, Sunday, 4 October 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

Not kidding, actually. We don't include those classical dudes just because their format wasn't the album, but we do throw vinyl albums (you know, with A and B sides) together with CD albums and presumeably download only collections next?

StanM, Sunday, 4 October 2009 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I mean, it's not like albums weren't invented almost 200 years after his death.

and how would you decide which version is the best? a poll of each mozart piece of music with every performance ever culminating 200 years later with a poll of each poll winner?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

poll 'em all and let Geir sort them out.

a single man owns you (Ioannis), Sunday, 4 October 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Why is it always Paranoid? They have better albums...

Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 October 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

StanM, you do see a difference between sound recordings and notated sheet music? Like, one that is greater than the difference between different audio formats?

(Honestly, don't see the issue with this poll, esp considering that Geir just copied the list directly from rateyourmusic.)

Sundar, Sunday, 4 October 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
