I love this song and I'm amazed at how many great covers have been done. I search out as many as I could, and uploaded them to help with your decision making. I couldn't find the Barbara Manning version, and I hope this covers all of them.

here's the songs

would love to hear Barbara Manning's version -- anyone got it?

tylerw, Sunday, 4 October 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

I just found the out takes from that album on a blog. It's 6 more songs called the laid back session. Very good.

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 4 October 2009 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

the Allman album cover is .... hmmm.

tylerw, Sunday, 4 October 2009 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I agree. But it is a great album. Sad and powerful. See, e.g., Please Call Home and All My Friends.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 4 October 2009 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

Ian Matthews iirc!!

ian, Sunday, 4 October 2009 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

The best version I've ever heard is from a blues singer from Portland OR named Anne Weiss, backed by guitarist David Jacob-Strain.

oh man, this is hard

butt sound insanity (gbx), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

ok this golden palomino track sucks, imo

butt sound insanity (gbx), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

Jackson Browne's solo acoustic version is the winner for me.

myndbloom, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

Love the Allman version too though.

myndbloom, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 02:36 (fifteen years ago)

nico's version is one of my favourite tracks of all time. i've heard JBs but don't like it a fraction as much. i feel a bit icked out to learn there are so many other versions. gonna vote nico and move on.

To reiterate
"TERRY MELCHER W/DORIS DAY"

No Terry w/ Doris no credibility imo.

this doesn't make any sense

makes plenty to me. i've basically always hated hearing versions of my most favourite songs by other artists. just seeing mates of state and fountains of wayne up there make me feel nauseous

lorax & order (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

but so many other versions are decent! and better than nico's! (which i like very much!)

i like that it's gone into cover-able status---it's a great song

butt sound insanity (gbx), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

I rly dig Melcher's voice

wilter, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah his whole solo album is great.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, see, that melcher/doris day version is some smarmy bullshit, tho

butt sound insanity (gbx), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

i was thinking more 'sentimental'

lol @ the cover

wilter, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

doing a duet for some lonely guy singin baout thangs song seems to miss the point entirely of being a sad bastard

butt sound insanity (gbx), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

i just find it sad that you know he's dead and the old bird is still kicking around :(

wilter, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

life is a thing, man

butt sound insanity (gbx), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

A duet with his MOM tho.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, i don't actually dislike it, but you get my point, right? 'these days' is one of the mopiest songs i know, and is basically about being depressed and lonesome, and a loser, by yourself

butt sound insanity (gbx), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

yeah ok! I do like her backing vocals though.

wilter, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 04:30 (fifteen years ago)
