Since all these polls are total boys club stuff and excluding women, here is a girl groups poll as selected by http://rateyourmusic.com/ that's less nerdy than the jazz poll and better than a pitchfork or funk poll!

from here on out sb'ing anyone who bemoans the absence of someone from a poll

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 4 October 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

This is kind of unfair; a lot of girl groups worked during a time when the single was the medium they released their material on. The Ronettes should theoretically win this.

Zeno, Sunday, 4 October 2009 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

ah well, seems like s-k, electrelane, breeders, elastica, slits etc etc etc aren't getting a look-in 'coz they're not explicitly 'girl-pop', just rock bands who happen to be all-female, which is a disparity i think didn't have to be made but there ya go

now here's hoping the granny dainger ministry of free speech exercises a bit of restraint

Now this list is largely dominated by the 60s, and the trouble with the 60s is that only a few acts (Beatles, Dylan) were taking albums seriously before 1966.
"Where Did Our Love Go?" is a fairly good album though, so I voted for that. Maybe not fully cohesive, but the highlights are so great the low points may be ignored.

Though as far as current Finnish all-women rock bands go, they lose to Pintandwefall.

Though as far as current Finnish all-women rock bands go, they lose to Pintandwefall.

Are they named after their drinking capabilities?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

This is kind of unfair; a lot of girl groups worked during a time when the single was the medium they released their material on.

You mean all girl groups...

Poor Goldie and the Gingerbreads. No album for you!

dlp9001, Monday, 5 October 2009 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a massive girl group fan and I've only heard about three of these albums all the way through... and one of them is by Love Unlimited, who were a soul/disco group of the 1970s.

Josefa, Monday, 5 October 2009 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

i've always wanted to hear the flirtations album, the single is so awesome

should check & see if it's ever seen reissue. seems that anything on deram that isn't freakbeat or psych has been long forgotten by the reissuers

problem is not people left out, problem is too many choices

narrow it down to shangri-la's vs. supremes, supremes win, the end

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Monday, 5 October 2009 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

There are five options for the Supremes. Though they don't include the best Supremes album, Love Child.

Josefa, Monday, 5 October 2009 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

My favourite Supremes album is "The Supremes Greatest Hits".. it's actually a 'contemporary' collection for it's time, as it has no (or very little) Diana Ross, and lots of "Automatically Sunshine", "Bad Weather" and suchlike.

Anyway, voted the Ronettes as I had the album and the Crystals one. The C's one has "He hit me" giving the lie that it was 'banned', but the Ron's just goes someplace else...

Mark G, Monday, 5 October 2009 08:35 (fifteen years ago)

Jim, Cherry Red reissued the Flirtations fairly recently (maybe last year I can't remember)

busy SUCKING TOTAL ARSE i guess

history mayne, Monday, 5 October 2009 09:28 (fifteen years ago)

GIRL GROUP is a genre.

GIRL is a gender.

These things are NOT interchangeable, guys.

It's like saying "where are Radiohead on this Boy Band poll? They are boys, they are in a band, why are they not up there with Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block ?!?"

Anyway, voting for albums in the Girl Group genre is patently fucking stupid. The whole genre is based around singles, not albums.

...and the wizard blew his horn (Masonic Boom), Monday, 5 October 2009 09:43 (fifteen years ago)

Loannis OTM. Albums by girl groups just doesn't work out, but there are a lot of fantastic singles in that list.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 5 October 2009 09:53 (fifteen years ago)

LOL Tried to make a Merseybeat poll, but it looks like more than 60 per cent of the Top 30 consists of The Beatles only. :)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 5 October 2009 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

(singles even)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 5 October 2009 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

just exclude the Beatles maybe?

a single man owns you (Ioannis), Monday, 5 October 2009 10:04 (fifteen years ago)

actually, RYM doesn't let you do that. but you could always copy the top 100 or so and then delete any unnecessary Beatles singles from the list.

a single man owns you (Ioannis), Monday, 5 October 2009 10:11 (fifteen years ago)

Just put the artists on then.

Supremes Go Go or Martha's Dance Party. Easily.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Monday, 5 October 2009 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

do people really listen to girl group ALBUMS?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 5 October 2009 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

I had Supremes Go Go on the other night. I've got, I dunno, ten or so albums from the list—it's easier than buying a whole bunch of 45s, and a bunch of them are killer collections of the singles. The only think that makes the albums dudly is their inclusion of boring ballads every couple of songs.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Monday, 5 October 2009 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

do people really listen to girl group ALBUMS?

Why not?

Utter insanity. But then again, I'm not sure if I voted in this one or not, cause A Christmas Gift would come higher if I had?

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:24 (fifteen years ago)

But, as repeated before, Girl Group was a single oriented, not album oriented genre.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago)

OKAY WHO VOTED FOR THE SATURDAYS. and how did they get to #25 in the RYM rankings?

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:27 (fifteen years ago)

A lot of the more modern stuff is really only tangentially "Girl Group" in terms of actual genre - though really I suppose that has more to do with the fact that Girl Group (being a specific genre composed of female vocalists singing a particular kind of pop vocal harmony) changing and mutating so much in the past 40 years that it's become as broad a genre as "electronic music" or "R&B" - only doubly so, because in this genre, some people are inclined to toss in *any* group of females regardless of whether they adhere to the genre specifications or not.

i.e. how the FUCK can Electrelane, for example, who for the vast majority of their career, were a purely instrumental group - possible be considered to be part of a genre based on VOCAL hamony style?

The problem, is of course, the name. Girl Group is a very specific genre. Groups comprised of girls is very much NOT. Sleater-Kinney and The Ronettes have as much in common in terms of genre as, say, Nirvana and the Four Tops.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:42 (fifteen years ago)

but electrelane weren't in this poll

Look, trust me on this one. Having been in both Girl Groups and bands that happened to have females in them, the number of people that can't tell the difference is quite huge.
