i never actually heard this album.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know how JH can stand to look at that photo.

Charles Shaar Murray was so enraptured that he lapsed into patois: "This is Oasis's world domination album. Dem a come fe mess up de area seeeeeeerious."

this is at least re-assuringly far lamer than the review of this album i did for the college paper

perhaps somebody should just post 'RIP' and then we can move along.

blueski, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

for music he confeses to dislike jh sure talks about be here now a lot

lame-assed, easy-target revisionism of the most tedious, predictable kind. the bold move would be to state that BHN was an incredible statement of intent, an album so charged with self-belief and knowledge of its own brilliance that it somehow overcame the crapulence and sterility of its source material and coasted to improbable victory on a wave of crystalline arrogance and swagger. slagging off the album on the grounds of 'pomposity' or 'ridiculousness' is SO 1998. pitchfork had it right. sometimes more is more. it's certainly my favourite oasis record. nobody else had the boneheaded ambition to even attempt anything like this.

n.b. i do not list oasis amongst music i like, i do not often talk about them, they do not pop into my head at frequent intervals, and i slag them off in comparison to most equivalent bands of the era, but i kinda have respect for the absurd ambition of BHN.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

ambition without ability is worthless

blueski, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

the bold move

Wrong move, surely? Being impressed by mere ambition - that's something you grow out of pretty quickly

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

... provided you were ever impressed by it in the first place, of course

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

slagging off the album on the grounds of 'pomposity' or 'ridiculousness' is SO 1998.

I originally read this as ISO 1998

tissp, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Which is far preferable to how it actually reads

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

theres something incredibly public school about this record, though i can't quite tell what

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Be Here Now, let us not forget, was not the only dud to be so hysterically lionized; two years before, very similar gasps of appreciation had greeted Blur's The Great Escape.

He had me up until here. Great Escape is 50 billion times better than Be Here Now. Even Oasis fans know that.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost)

Maybe this:

BHN was an incredible statement of intent, an album so charged with self-belief and knowledge of its own brilliance that it somehow overcame the crapulence and sterility of its source material and coasted to improbable victory on a wave of crystalline arrogance and swagger

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

ambition without ability is worthless

Oasis had ability with (many claimed stolen) melodies; they knew when a few chords jammed together in a particular order sounded good. They had no grasp of originality, nuance, sound, timbre, tone, rhythm etc etc etc, but they were great at making stuff you could listen to without engaging your brain.

The Great Escape is a fantastic record, however, with MANY of the above characteristics present and on sparkling form.

i don't really feel that. it was a big popular success. i reckon harris is about right re. it took six months for the penny to drop, with music press readers, and maybe 'out there'. but i reckon chris moyles would still play oasis. it was six months later that 'q' readers made 'ok computer' the best album of all time.

i said i hadn't heard it, which is sort of untrue. i never owned it. it one of the worst covers in history.

Is 'ambition' really the right word for Be Here Now? It makes it sound like it belongs with Tusk or Paul's Boutique.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

maybe 'infectious self-aggrandisement' would be a better way of putting it.

next year Harris will be all "Six by Mansun: what WERE they thinking"?

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

Pharmaceutical ambition maybe, musical ambition definitely maybe not

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

Mansun collaborated twice with punk legend Howard Devoto (from Magazine & Buzzcocks ), who co-wrote EP B-side tracks "Everyone Must Win" and "Railings".

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe they should inverse director's cut it.

The documentary had the producer basically saying it was his job to reign in the 'ott'ness, and it was his failing, not the (inexperienced but by now overpowerful) Gallaghers.

There are a fair few good tracks on it, but ....

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

"Everyone Must Win" was alright

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

time for england to stop experimenting with wicketkeepers right at the top of the order :) i too am watching this on a plasma. except in my case it's 2am. no work tomorrow, however, which is fantastic.

i like definitely maybe. but for scale and immensity (done well, of course) i'll look outside the oasis canon.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

They're saying Phil Mustard should be England's Kaluwitharana figure. I'm not sure if he'd come off against international bowlers, but it might be worth a shot...

Just got offed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i noticed phil mustard was playing well for durham. but i generally think you need solid specialist openers in this day and age. it'll be interesting to see what openers australia opt for when gilly and haydos are no longer around. i might opt for mike hussey and phil jaques, though there's new talent cropping up all the time

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Mustard and Onions must play for England! If only for comedy value!

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

hahahha, well it's comedy value that they're already in the same team at the moment anyway!

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

A huge overdose of cocaine and way too much confidence at least didn't prevent "Stand By Me" from being a great song.

This is by no means as good as "Morning Glory" though. Not even remotely.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

Norway became a member of the International Cricket Council in 2000 [2], and played their first international tournament that year, the European Representative Championships in Austria. They won the tournament without losing a game, but did not play again until 2003 when they took part in the ECC Trophy for the first time. They won this tournament too, again without losing a game. This qualified them for Division Two of the European Championship in 2004. They finished fourth in the six team tournament, gaining wins against Gibraltar and Israel.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure this is old news.

To: Al Gore

Dear Mr. Gore,

We, the undersigned, hold you in the highest regards for inventing the internet. However, there is one issue that has come to light that noone could have possibly forseen: NORWAY. Norway has no business on the internet. 98.3% of Norwegians with internet connections use their computers to join english-speaking chat rooms, only to babble incoherently and then flood before being forcefully removed. This issue must be resolved immediately.

Mr. Gore, O Great Creator of the Internet, please remove all major backbone routes to and from Norway. This is the only solution at this point. Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

The guitar sound on that track was created by sampling a helicopter crashing on Liam's sunglasses.

I bought that single the week it came out without hearing it, cos I did like the 1st 2 albums at the time, and when I got home and put it on, that was it for me, I never bothered with Oasis again it was so shit.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 08:52 (eighteen years ago)

The DNKWIM b-side 'Stay Young' was the best song in that entire period for Oasis - a brilliant stupid shout-along anthem that would have been right at home on the previous albums - and it didn't even make it onto the BHN, showing just how fucked up and clueless they were at the time.

onimo, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

I quite liked DYKWIM; I thought it was big and dark and groovey (by Oasis standards). I liked the Morse code and the vibe. It was the rest of the album that was fucking wank.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

I've only begun to really get into Oasis, these last six months. Those first two albums are fucking amazing. From what I've read, I just imagine that 'Be Here Now' is 'Definitely Maybe' x 10.

I'm saving it, though. I'm backtracking through the Britpop thing now (I'm 21), and just checking out what seems worth it. I know 'BHN' is sort of the "last" Britpop album, so, I thought it should be the last one of that era that I check out. Almost there.

Yeah. Excelsior this. Oasis is a joke now. Whatever. I think they fucking rock, and, so do some certain well-respected rock critics around here. . .

They fucking kill Blur.

I just imagine that 'Be Here Now' is 'Definitely Maybe' x 10.

Well you're certain to be disappointed going into it like that. Be Here Now is really difficult to compare to the first two albums, mainly because it cranks up the melodrama to 11 while leaving behind most of the melodies that made the first two great. Still, there's something I love about its coke-addled mess.

Still seems largely up to the standards of the first two albums to me, which is to say not awful, pretty good even, but not an album or band I can ever understand anyone getting really excited about. I also thought melodramatic aggrandizement of their minor virtues was always kind of the MO of their music, and largely what made them interesting to the extent they were, so those attacks on the album strike me as weird.
