Spice Girls. Because of the ziga-zig-AH!

Tuomas, Monday, 5 October 2009 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

I find it a bit difficult, as Be My Baby is pretty much my favourite song of all time. (Yeah, I know I said it was Sugar Sugar last week, I flip flop, OK?) If you add all the permutations and copies of BMB over time, it's responsible for about half my record collection.

But, like... Give Him A Great Big Kiss, or Da Doo Ron Ron, or You Can't Hurry Love - there are so many behemoths on this list. And all the little side-lines that are so evocative. My Boyfriend's Back, Please Mr. Postman, Tell Him.

When I'm trying to show people what the Girl Group genre is about, I will usually pick something like "Sweet Talkin' Guy" by the Chiffons, (those harmonies on the breakdown!) which is unfortunately not on the list.

I honestly can't decide. Too much gold here.

"He's So Fine" here; maybe my fave pop song ever.

Voted for Give Him a Great Big Kiss. I love a lot of songs on this list, but if I am true to my heart, Shangri-La's > every other girl group

Between "Be My Baby", "(Walking) In The Rain", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Baby Love" and "Leader Of The Pack". Going for the former in the long run.

He Cried/Dressed In Black and it's really not even that close. That's one of the best singles ever.

Neko Case covered Train From Kansas City when I saw her yesterday.

Alex in SF, Monday, 5 October 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

I always felt like a bit of a Motown heathen, preferring Martha and the Vandellas to the Supremes, but the Shangri-Las? Not even close! (Current favorite: My Love is like a Heat Wave).

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Monday, 5 October 2009 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

It's true. No one is really close to the Shangri-Las.

Alex in SF, Monday, 5 October 2009 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

Someone needs to tell these folks that there's more to girl groups than Shangri-Las, Supremes, and Ronettes. Most of my favorite girl group singles are missing. "Dressed in Black" is an epic song, but the Pussycats did the best version by far. I think "Egyptian Shumba" wins my vote just because it's an amazingly fun single, despite the fact that it's not terribly representative of most girl group stuff.

where'm i from? ny baby, how bout you?

surm, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

i, baby, am from the place where, in the language spoken there, "surm" means "death", literally. (nope, i poop you not) and that's wot made me wonder.

t**t, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

oh

surm, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

finnish?

surm, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

nah, 'stonian.

t**t, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

In Finnish you need to add an "a" to the end of "surm" to get death. But the two languages are pretty close to each other.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, "surma" in Finnish would be "killing" and not "death", because it's a death caused by someone, not just a random death.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

thanx, Tuomas.
and THAT's how un-girl-group-single wer'e gonna get here.
sorry everyone! :)

and now i'd like to change my vote to "and then he kissed me"!

t**t, Monday, 5 October 2009 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

I can't quite believe that I am the first person who is thinking:

"wtf! No He Hit Me (and It Felt Like A Kiss)?" I mean, it was definitely a single - how is it not in here?

In its absence, I'll plump for "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" , but would have rather have plumped for "Past, Present and Future" if I could have done.

Guilty_Boksen, Monday, 5 October 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe people at RYM weren't eager to vote for that tune because of, you know, the rather nasty implications of the title.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 October 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

okay I'd never actually heard "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" before and WOW this is about a million times creepier and more subversive than the shit I was listening to in high school

The Book of Outhere (HI DERE), Monday, 5 October 2009 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

thinking more about the list's '70s-'80s gap. do people just not think of those as girl groups? more that came to mind: pointer sisters, sister sledge, labelle. must be others.

Be My Baby

Another for 'You Keep Me Hangin' On', ahead of 'Please Mr Postman', 'Be My Baby', 'My World Is Empty Without You' and 'Come See About Me'. So many great singles here, but The Supremes just rule.

Mike Crandle, Financial Analyst, Bear Stearns, New York, NY 10185 (res), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

I some of these are "girl bands" more than "girl groups". May be nitpicking, but it's a matter of genre.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Monday, 19 October 2009 11:18 (fifteen years ago)

I've got it down to Be My Baby vs. You Can't Hurry Love. I think.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Monday, 19 October 2009 11:21 (fifteen years ago)

You Can't Hurry Love has better lyrics, and that BEAT, but really - it's more Motown than Girl Group specifically.

Besides, Be My Baby is perhaps one of the best songs ever recorded. It's not about the lyrics, it's about the SOUND, about the tone and quality of Ronnie's voice, about the whole gorgeous fuzz of it - and oh yeah, that drumbeat.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Monday, 19 October 2009 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

This is too difficult.

'Dedicated to the one I love' is being slept on here, I think. I'm torn between 'Give him a great big kiss' and 'He's so fine'.

Girls Aloud I can accept, but all those votes for "Wannabe"=madness. It's probably the worst Spice Girls single even.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 19 October 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

No, I'd say it's one of their best, but still nowhere near "Be My Baby" (or many others no the list), so yeah madness.

The Perfect Weapon 2, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I call bullshit on this. I think there was either 1) a lot of "irony" voting to spoil the ballot or else 2) kids today have a ten second memory and haven't actually heard most of these tunes. In which case, SERIOUSLY, shame on them.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:22 (fifteen years ago)

so much heartbreak in the zeroes :'( .

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I wish I had about 20 socks to vote for them all.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago)

Can we do this again with some kind of single transferable vote system? I'm sure Be My Baby would still win this (and no complaints about that), but it might mean that some of those zero votes may get a look in for the top 5.

Or maybe do a best of each band and then do a final poll of the winners of each of them, cos at least the Shangri Las vote wouldn't be split, as I think is the case here.

Seriously, give me a compilation of those bottom 26 and I'd be in heaven.

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 11:40 (fifteen years ago)

2) kids today have a ten second memory and haven't actually heard most of these tunes.

sounds about right

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

Then again, why should they know stuff from 40 or 50 years before they were even born? It's like their grandparents' music, I guess. I mean, even the Spice Girls are ancient history to the yoot of today.

mathematics and Rube Goldberg contraptions (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 13:58 (fifteen years ago)
