Flamingos should be #1, #527 is just so wrong.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

otm

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

I keep waiting for a group of songs where there's something like half the list that I love. Probably won't happen--my tastes are sufficiently different from Marsh's that it's invariably a couple of favorites, and a lot of stuff I've either grown tired of or never cared for much to begin with (and a few I don't know). For this group, "Temptation 'Bout to Get Me" first, Flamingos second, and (what I think will win) probably Del Shannon third.

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Coin flip between Flamingos and Del Shannon.

Alex Quebec (WmC), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

The last 30 seconds of "Stand!" After that, "Beat It."

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

yep, voted for "Runaway"

Euler, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

voting "youre gonna miss me" over the dells and del shannon, just on account of my mood..

outdoor_miner, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Flamingos, Del Shannon...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

I need to read these lists closer. The Knight Brothers got, and would probably still get, my vote, but I'd go 1. "Temptation ('Bout to Get Me)," 2. "Way Over There," 3. "You're Gonna Miss Me," and 4. "I Only Have Eyes for You." It's a stronger group than I thought. Please don't let "Beat It" or "Bad Girls" win.

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

RUNAWAY

iatee, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

Lots of good ones: MJ, B.B., D. Summer, Isley Bros., MARRS, CCR, LL, Run DMC, 13th Floor, E. Cochran but this is between Del Shannon and the Flamingos. Coin flip: I'm going with the latter.

jetfan, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

5- Arthur Alexander Soldiers of love
6- Thirteenth Floor Elevators You're gonna miss me

amateurist, Friday, 9 October 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

eh, should have voted for falcons.

amateurist, Friday, 9 October 2009 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

Voting Del Shannon.

Runners up: 13th Floor, Run DMC, Donna Summer, Isleys, M/A/R/R/S, LL, Cochran, etc.

Always seemed a complete bore to me: "The Thrill Is Gone"

Don't know lots of the others.

xhuxk, Saturday, 10 October 2009 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

"Beat It" a runnerup too, obv.

And I've always prefered "Magic Carpet Ride" to "Born To Be Wild," if anybody cares. (It's funkier.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 10 October 2009 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

Always seemed a complete bore to me: "The Thrill Is Gone"

totally agree. i just never really got into b.b. king, period.

i'm tempted to vote for lavern baker out of knee-jerk allegiance to atlantic r&b. (and because i love the song.)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 10 October 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't see this, but would have voted for "Stand!" over MARRS, Flamingos, Steppenwolf, & MJ.

contraristanning (The Reverend), Saturday, 10 October 2009 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

My fave B.B. King line: "Nobody loves me but my mother, and she could be jiving too." "The Thrill Is Gone" has pop-culture resonance or whatever--it owns that sentiment.

Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 11 October 2009 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

too late to vote cochran

Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 12 October 2009 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

i find b.b. king kind of boring, frankly. "the thrill is gone" is ok, though.

amateurist, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

He was great in concert, but that was 26 years ago and he still had a little fire inside.

WmC, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

I thought I disliked "The Thrill is Gone" until I listened to it again earlier this year and suddenly heard it less as a boring blues, more as a chilly late-60s soul record.

Didn't vote in this batch. The most uninspiring bunch for me thus far.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

it is definitely a kind of soul/blues hybrid. i like the string arrangement a lot.
