d'oh! this was originally meant to be a taking sides between these bands' respective debut albums, i.e. In a Flat Field vs. The Psychedelic Furs, but i fucked up. so bear that in mind, if you will. or not, as the case may be.

In the Flat Field, duh. (shoot me now; don't wait till we get home!)

This is a silly poll.

BAUHAUS of course.

"Sweet Child O' Mine" is my favorite Psychedelic Furs song

I'm voting Furs

all the Bauhaus high points in the catalog aren't as great at the first two Furs albums no matter how bad the Furs went on to suck

there, I said it

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Friday, 16 October 2009 05:37 (fifteen years ago)

For me, Bauhaus had so much more to offer, took outrageous risks, and delivered it all with swagger and panache. The Furs do still carry nostalgic memories of early 80's 'alternative' disco nights, but there's a certain enervated coolness there which keeps them from rising above superior easy listening.

Soukesian, Friday, 16 October 2009 09:32 (fifteen years ago)

what J0hn said for me (third and fourth albums weren't bad either). i kinda like Bauhaus, too, but always felt that they could have gone much further than they did. i mean, is being THE definitive goth band really enough? i don't think so. plus, where's their Metal Box?

wot?? (Ioannis), Friday, 16 October 2009 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

oh, and both were (obviously) SEVERELY Bowie/Lydon-Rotten damaged post-punk Brits bands who happened to release their debut albums in 1980--thereby, the points of comparison. (should have probably put that somewhere at the start of the thread. oh well.)

still wanna know what Alex thinks about all this.

wot?? (Ioannis), Friday, 16 October 2009 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

Where is the Furs' Metal Box?

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Friday, 16 October 2009 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

I think the Bauhaus metal box would have been something Daniel Ash wore onstage.

Soukesian, Friday, 16 October 2009 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

the Furs debut seems to be far more Pistols-enamored than PiL-smitten to me--the "trash/punk aesthetic" and all that. while Bauhaus' debut always seemed like a PiL tribute album (more or less)--just trade Johnny's Boris Karloff for Peter's Bela Lugosi, if you will.

xp

wot?? (Ioannis), Friday, 16 October 2009 10:39 (fifteen years ago)

"Johnny's Boris Karloff for Peter's Bela Lugosi?"

Wow. What an image.

Soukesian, Friday, 16 October 2009 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

well, hey...

wot?? (Ioannis), Friday, 16 October 2009 10:47 (fifteen years ago)

Big fan of vintage horror and punk rock, so my mind is blown by imagining those bands fronted by those actors.

This is going to require some thought. (And how about Peter Lorre as Iggy?)

Soukesian, Friday, 16 October 2009 10:53 (fifteen years ago)

who's Bowie then?

wot?? (Ioannis), Friday, 16 October 2009 10:59 (fifteen years ago)

i liberated the Lydon/Karloff comparison from Greil Marcus' The Metal Box review, btw.

wot?? (Ioannis), Friday, 16 October 2009 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

Bowie would have to be Vincent Price. I'm thinking a mash-up of scenes from 'Theatre of Blood' and 'Masque of the Red Death' with 'Cracked Actor'.

Soukesian, Friday, 16 October 2009 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

good lord! now i'm imagining Ziggy Stardust as performed by dear old Vincent.

wot?? (Ioannis), Friday, 16 October 2009 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

Me too. Actually comes out pretty close to the Bauhaus cover, what with the theatrical en-unc-iation. Vincent's stage moves are better though.

And y'know what? I think he would have been up for it.

UNDEAD, UNDEAD, UNDEAD !!!

Soukesian, Friday, 16 October 2009 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

I wish I'd voted. Choosing between secondhand pleasures of the kind offered by these two bands is hard, but P-Furs every time. Bauhaus always seemed silly -- stupid, really -- and I speak as a mild fan of Peter Murphy's work up through Deep.

Of course Bauhaus were silly, that's the point. They were also fuckin' raw behind all the mascara.

The P-Furs had the better tunes.

I remember them all sounding pretty much the same. Not a bad sound, but all on one setting, one mood.
