Does ILM influence your record buying ?

... 'CAUSE i'VE STARTED BUYING RECORDS AGAIN !

It started when I read the Lemon Jelly thread, soon after I went to Robin's site, DJ Martian reminded me of some obscure thing I'd seen in RPM, then that prog thread - why do I trust your judgements rather than the inkies - is it the 'interaction' - 'CAUSE IT'S NOT me just a sucker for a neat turn of phrase ?

Geordie should check stuff, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

been tilted in one way or another by recommendations, but i haven't thought 'I MUST SEEK THIS OUT' because something was endorsed. closest to that would probably be the skitz album. been meaning to check that out, really.

ethan, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hellyeah. Because I am that much more on top of the current pop landscape now, I find myself buying the occasional new full priced album, whereas before I would only buy what I could find used.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Glad to hear it, Ethan. In some of your other posts you sounded like someone who might not even acknowledge that hip-hop *existed* in the UK. You'll like it, I think.

And, yes, the Skitz album was the last CD I bought and, yes, it was mainly through the UK hip-hop thread. I suppose that makes a positive answer to the question.

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let's have a bit of 'real life' interactivity here, shall we? Prior to the pub meet tomorrow I shall be music shopping (budget = about £60) around Oxford Street, and I don't have a shopping list at the moment, so can you lot suggest stuff for me? A bit lazy of me, I know, but I'm stumped at the moment. Please? :)

DG, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

get a cd other than sophtware slump from grandaddy.

Kevin Enas, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shopping list - select from the menu sir - these are on my target list

Mouse on Mars – Idiology (Domino)- see pitchfork review the leftfield abstract experimental release of the 2001?

Minus – Jesus Christ Bobby (Smekkleysa) - innovative icecore metalcore, cuts it deep - rips it up, the most cutting edge and flowing noise radical rock in 2001 - Minus reach a intensity that sounds natural rather than forced - even John Kennedy on Xfm has jumped on the minus buzz. Minus

Bows – Cassidy (Too Pure) - esoteric and lush sounding perfect for the spring. Bows

Vladislav Delay – Anima (Mille Plateaux) - dubby deep minimal electronic music to absorb yourself in Vladislav Delay

From his home in Helsinki, Finland, Delay has brought forward a new directive into the sounds of dub and minimal electronics, placing him as one of the premier artists involved in the recent wave of electronic dub hybrids. Vladislav Delay returns with Anima, the followup to last years critically acclaimed Mille Plateaux release Entain and Mutila on Chain Reaction. Anima is an opus of over 60 minutes, a continuous mix that reveals itself beyond audio design. Delay succeds in developing his new methods of production and altering music as it is typically translated. Rather than familiar electronic traits of looping sounds, Anima continually develops in an organic flow, thus giving the interpretation that perhaps the music is less a digital excursion and more an instrumental development. Vladislav Delay is setting on potentials, effects and impulses of the never heard. Imagine a new world of audio.

Angels of Light – How I Loved You (Young God Records) - michael gira of ex swans delivers deep pensive atmospheric songs about life and love. see Young God records

Katatonia – Last Fair Deal Gone Down (Peaceville) atmospheric dark rock - heavy melancholy mood music with a unique feel. Katatonia

Kosheen - Slip and slide suicide CD single - jump up vocal drum n bass packed with energy Kosheen

and a packet of 7 blank tapes.

This has been a DJ Martian information service.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey now, i like uk hiphop a good bit, the roots manuva and new flesh for old records get a lot of play around here, and that single of all the big dada mcs getting freaky over new flesh producer 'part 2' ripping off timbaland is ace (except maybe mike ladd, who doesn't flow well with the song despite having the best lines). uk hiphop: CLASSIC.

ethan, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got Daft Punk's Discovery because of all the praise it was getting here and it's GREAT ! So much catchier than their first one ! ILM has definitely affected the way I think about music even though it hasn't affected my purchases much yet. I'm still waiting for the Clientele's and the Avalanches' albums to show up at the used record store.

DG : Get Desmond Dekker's Rockin' Steady: The Best Of... You won't regret it

Patrick, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's a good point actually, there's a lot of music i had never heard of before being discussed on ilm that i would now pick up if seen used at a reasonable price. not that damned daft punk album though.

ethan, Thursday, 26 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Definitely. I know if I ask for opinions or recommendations (e.g Krautrock thread), I'll get some well informed, controversial, funny and passionate views. That's great.

ILM has definitely allowed me to open up to some music that I hadn't considered listening to. Thanks.

Dr. C, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't bought anything solely because of ILM recommendations yet, but I have added the Skitz, Bent and Lemon Jelly records to my mental shopping list after hearing about them here first. Individual contributors have influenced me outside the forum to the extent that my record collection would be radically different if it hadn't have been for the Star Chamber of ama and the sites that sprang from it (ie. Freaky Trigger, CAOTM, Skykicking, VSL, Josh blog etc.) .

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm afraid not, at least not in a direct way of recommendations (save The Avalanches, heard it here first, also the news of the NEU! re- release). But all this talk of music somehow has had an influence since I've been cd's like crazy since January. Then again, this really is the best year in music since 1991, so that could be a factor.

Omar, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar, I'm currently listening to the Avalanches.Pretty good, although I don't think they deserve the hype. It's like Dj Shadow but loads more fun. I would also suggest Steve Wynn's new one (a double record!). As well as reissues of Fifth Dimension, Soft Boys and the upcoming Nuggets box.

Stevie Nixed, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stevie - WHAT upcoming Nuggets box? You mean a new one?

Dr. C, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's funny that DG said he'd be shopping around Oxford Street today. I've just been doing the same thing, but haven't been able to find anything, in any of the shops, at the right price. So much for 'record buying'.

the pinefox, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ILM *ended* my record buying.

Kris, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kris, what do you mean? have we put forth so many recommendations that you simply don't have the funds to keep up? or have we, or has tanya made all music sound worthless to you? or do you just get mp3s? or are you just yanking our collective chain?

fred solinger, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
That's where I get all my Grand Funk Railroad albums.

Patrick, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It has convinced me that buying Tori Amos albums = not a great idea.

Nicole, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oops, Fred, I missed your question. I worded it incorrectly, as correlation does not necessarily imply causation, but I haven't bought any new records in ages. Because I just listen to Gluecifer all day long. ILM definitely does influence my downloading though, I just downloaded all the Cinderella I could find.

Kris, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no but that's just 'cause where i live is pretty bad for finding new (as in recently released) stuff + i don't have a functional CD player so i mostly buy old (as in not recently-released, & as in 2nd hand) vinyl. a really good thing happened yesterday tho' , i found "Stop Your Nonsense" by Position Normal in the sale imports bin at Echo - didn't know anything about it but i checked it & a few other things from the same bin out on headphones in the shop - liked, bought, went home & listened more & liked more...so i got on the computer & did a Goog. search to find out, y'know, who is this, what else have they done - I found Tom's FT review of it & I was *so pleased* that I'd found a record that he liked too! i mean 'cause i think he's such a great writer but i'd resigned myself to the idea that we had hardly any likes/dislikes in common so his writing had no practical "consumer-guide" value (not that that's all or even most of what i read music critics for anymore but , you know) - HEY WOW GREAT.

duane, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually i've noticed him giving props to heaps of things i like since i said that. so what do i know.
and ILM will also influence me to buy the ZTT (can't remember how to spell it in full) if it's still in the cheap bin this arvo, because somebody recently asked a question about the Art Of Noise

duane, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yeah, right , that's who it was.

duane, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"the ZTT" = "the ZTT sampler compilation album whatever it's called", dammit.

duane, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three weeks pass...
Apparently ILM does influence my record-buying, 'cause today I walked out of a second-hand CD store with the Manics' "The Holy Bible" and Palace Music's "Arise Therefore" ( Which was categorized under Christian and Gospel- which is pretty odd for a record with a song titled "You have cum in your hair and your dick is hanging out"). Incidentally, "Arise Therefore" seems a perfect candidate for the "modest records" thread, while "The Holy Bible" is one of the least "modest" records I've heard. I don't think I like it very much.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmm...

maybe.....i've not listened to my strokes ep since all of the hatred was poured on it. but now that has cleared, I can pull it out again. but that was the only influential thing. and norman talking about peter hammill. i avoid obscure indie/electronica...

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hell yeah, interesting to see what y'all make of records that i don't know much about. big props to tim f especially (much from skykicking). its good to see what other ordinary people make of stuff, and you get to know where diff people are coming from and filter their opinion through what they've said before and stuff. now, after that, i reckon y'all should recommend one record to me that y'think i haven't heard

gareth, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ordinary? Tim is the Boy Wonder from Down Under yo.

Josh, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ordinary? = not complacent professional critic bores like Christgau who think they know better, when they clearly don't.

DJ Martian, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wuz a joke yo.

Josh, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wish I knew 1 % of what Christgau knows about music, and I wish DJ Martian's recommendations were 1 % as reliable as Christgau's.

Patrick, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Speaks someone who has recently stated he has bought 3 albums this year and likes the 60s/70s establishment: My meat-and-potatoes Clash/Stones/Springsteen tastes make me a bit of a dad-rock type by Freaky Trigger standards,

Your views come as no surpise. Your welcome to the obvious choices of Christgau. His choices of recent years as so predictable ala Rolling Stone/Q . I have seen from lists what Christgau rates, and I know that they are many better options.

The opinions you assert in your ridiculous sentence about my music listening are completely meaningless becuase they not based on experience [it obvious to me from your posts on ILM that you have never experienced a large percentage of the music that I enjoy] - how can anyone claim to have any credibility of opinion when their comparative knowledge of contemporary music is so lacking in actual listening experience.

Opinions can only justified when you have actually experienced a particular piece of music.

I will continue follow my own path.

DJ Martian, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Speaks someone who has recently stated he has bought 3 albums this year

That's a money issue, Martian, not an enthusiasm one - there's dozens of 2001 albums I wish I owned, but rent and food go first. Trust me, I'd love to go around making top-250-albums-of-2001-so-far lists.

Your argument about how you and I look for different things in music is valid, but it's equally valid in another direction - Christgau is clearly not threading the same musical ground that you are, and that doesn't make him a know-nothing - whether I've heard the music that you praise, or you've heard the music that he praises is irrelevant (and again, cf. money issue) - you probably don't need to hear Old 97s' latest one to know that it's not gonna be up your alley, and likewise for me and the latest Brit/techno/industrial/dub/Tool/metal/art-noise wonder (though I'd happily give a chance to the records on your 2001 list by Air, Radiohead, the Avalanches and Basement Jaxx - or practically anyone, really - if I were to get them for free).

Patrick, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarification that 250 list is a tracking list (as mentioned on the 2001 year so far thread on ILM) that I update each week - I wish I had the money to get them all !.

Actually so far in 2001 I have only managed to buy 30-40 new albums, although I have sampled many other artists through mp3 downloads, radio, free cd samplers from magazines etc

(So yes I do understand the money element is an obvious constraint, however a person like Christgau though would get most review copies free and IMHO he still manages to miss out on many other options, and celebrates the most obvious/higher profile artists)

As I have just added to the forthcoming albums 2001 ILM thread: I wish had more money to buy more albums! but being better informed about what is available enables me to prioritize what to buy.

DJ Martian, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As for Christgau, his latest Consumer Guide recommendations includes R&B, African, Cuban, country, indie-rock, top 40 and children's music. None of the records might be your cup of meat, but unless Bang On A Can, Cachaito Lopez, Shaver and City High are household names (or even critical favorites) in your corner of the world, charges of complacency = complete and utter bull.

Patrick, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Xgau did something really awful (yet pop-record related) to a teenage witch in a parallel dimension when he was 16, and was ROUNDLY CURSED: you will listen to EVERY RECORD BY EVERYONE for the REST OF TIME and MARK EACH ONE OUT OF FIVE. People moan at him, but I wd not swap with him for ANYTHING! Yes, he has the writing style of a poot, but WHO'S SURPRISED!? He listens to all records by everyone!! Nightmare!! More sensible critics (like me) base their judgments on never listening to anything.

However, in the I Listened to Everything Race, DJ Martian is clearly second only to Xgau, and only because he's a bit younger...

mark s, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarification that 250 list is a tracking list (as mentioned on the 2001 year so far thread on ILM) that I update each week - I wish I had the money to get them all !.

My bad. I was wondering how it was even physically possible to have listened to enough 2001 records to have a 250-best list, thinking maybe DJ Martian days last 96 hours or something. But anyway, the part of my Introduce Yourselves post that you didn't quote is about how I have a huge musical appetite and curiosity, and that bit is at least as important as the Clash/Springsteen/Stones/dadrock part - I genuinely would love to hear a lot more music than I do get to hear, and in a broader range of genres too.

Patrick, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark, dude, you actually had me going around online dictionaries searching for the word "poot". All I found was "the foot of an animal or bird with a number of hard curved pointed nails. Dutch: poot (de)" (I'd hate to write like one of those !). And it's also, oddly, a slangy Dutch word for "a male homosexual", but I gather that this is not what you meant ;).

Patrick, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

poot = prissy old fart, only in a good way

Um. I may have made it up. But you know that rubber novelty toy which you squeeze and its mouth and eyes bulge out all pointy: that's POOT! also...

mark s, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

poot = a verb, too

Josh, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"poot" means FART, Mark. if you made it up, yr Frank Zappa.

duane, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In my parallel universe (aka MTV) City High IS a household name, and the song which I liked at first gets rilly grating with the after-school-special production f/x. And in my other parallel universe (complacent college-indie-exotic-styleboyz) Bang On A Can is a household name. Covering musiq for airports was a DUMB IDEA. Duh. Also -- finding yer own path = work. Basing listening on recvd. crit wisdom/popcharts = easy and thus classic. Also = true commitment to P!O!P!

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about... 'Pooter'? (Thanks to Stevie T.)

I have never quite properly answered the question of this resurgent thread. The answer is: No.

the pinefox, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three months pass...
Yes definitely. I just ordered Joy Division's "Heart and Soul" though I have all their CDs (thread here).
Then I ordered Pinback's "This is Pinback" (listening chamber 9) and
Jeff Beck's "You had it coming" (chamber 7).
Maybe I should refrain a little bit of following ILM too closely. Otherwise it will make me very poor.

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh no Alex you bought the guitar wank with the lousy beats! Oh well, each to his own, I suppose..

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but let us know if the rest of the Pinback album hold up..

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought the New Order record, after swearing never to buy another one, based on comments on this board. It's crap and I love it. I saw a Nobukazu Takemura cd (Hoshi No Koe) and picked it up because I remembered the name from Momus' list. It's beautiful. Thanks, Nick.

Dan, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch, I have got two other beautiful mp3 tracks from Pinback, Loro and Versailles. And I listened to the audio clips at Amazon. Crutch is definitely another gem. Most of the albums in my collection do not offer four outstanding tracks. So I had to get the cd.
Concerning Jeff Beck i also listened to sound clips. And I believe Billy Dods who suggested the track in chamber 7 that it is the weakest track on the cd. The beat is not always so crap and the guitar wankery seems to be quite varied.

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One time DJ Martian mentioned that he used to listen to Yello back in the day. I bought Yello's best-of purely for that reason.

record buying?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

I have def bought some records solely because ILM champoined them. For example Playgroup and now some Crammed comp box because Scott mentioned Honeymoonkillers.

Then, I'll end up liking and buying maybe 10% of what I hear.

I meant as in what I download. I don't think ilM has made me purchase anything I didn't already want to acquire. At least not yet.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

ILM showed me Kompakt. I am eternally grateful.

ILM influences my record buying to the extent that it helps me keep up with shifts / new artists in genres I already love (basically house - but that's a wide pallette), and generally become interested in an artist through ILM repition of a name on multiple threads (like Ada)
