It started when I read the Lemon Jelly thread, soon after I went to Robin's site, DJ Martian reminded me of some obscure thing I'd seen in RPM, then that prog thread - why do I trust your judgements rather than the inkies - is it the 'interaction' - 'CAUSE IT'S NOT me just a sucker for a neat turn of phrase ?

And, yes, the Skitz album was the last CD I bought and, yes, it was mainly through the UK hip-hop thread. I suppose that makes a positive answer to the question.

Mouse on Mars – Idiology (Domino)- see pitchfork review the leftfield abstract experimental release of the 2001?
Minus – Jesus Christ Bobby (Smekkleysa) - innovative icecore metalcore, cuts it deep - rips it up, the most cutting edge and flowing noise radical rock in 2001 - Minus reach a intensity that sounds natural rather than forced - even John Kennedy on Xfm has jumped on the minus buzz. Minus
Bows – Cassidy (Too Pure) - esoteric and lush sounding perfect for the spring. Bows
Vladislav Delay – Anima (Mille Plateaux) - dubby deep minimal electronic music to absorb yourself in Vladislav Delay
From his home in Helsinki, Finland, Delay has brought forward a new directive into the sounds of dub and minimal electronics, placing him as one of the premier artists involved in the recent wave of electronic dub hybrids. Vladislav Delay returns with Anima, the followup to last years critically acclaimed Mille Plateaux release Entain and Mutila on Chain Reaction. Anima is an opus of over 60 minutes, a continuous mix that reveals itself beyond audio design. Delay succeds in developing his new methods of production and altering music as it is typically translated. Rather than familiar electronic traits of looping sounds, Anima continually develops in an organic flow, thus giving the interpretation that perhaps the music is less a digital excursion and more an instrumental development. Vladislav Delay is setting on potentials, effects and impulses of the never heard. Imagine a new world of audio.
Angels of Light – How I Loved You (Young God Records) - michael gira of ex swans delivers deep pensive atmospheric songs about life and love. see Young God records
Katatonia – Last Fair Deal Gone Down (Peaceville) atmospheric dark rock - heavy melancholy mood music with a unique feel. Katatonia
Kosheen - Slip and slide suicide CD single - jump up vocal drum n bass packed with energy Kosheen
and a packet of 7 blank tapes.

ILM has definitely allowed me to open up to some music that I hadn't considered listening to. Thanks.

Your views come as no surpise. Your welcome to the obvious choices of Christgau. His choices of recent years as so predictable ala Rolling Stone/Q . I have seen from lists what Christgau rates, and I know that they are many better options.
The opinions you assert in your ridiculous sentence about my music listening are completely meaningless becuase they not based on experience [it obvious to me from your posts on ILM that you have never experienced a large percentage of the music that I enjoy] - how can anyone claim to have any credibility of opinion when their comparative knowledge of contemporary music is so lacking in actual listening experience.
Opinions can only justified when you have actually experienced a particular piece of music.
I will continue follow my own path.
That's a money issue, Martian, not an enthusiasm one - there's dozens of 2001 albums I wish I owned, but rent and food go first. Trust me, I'd love to go around making top-250-albums-of-2001-so-far lists.
Your argument about how you and I look for different things in music is valid, but it's equally valid in another direction - Christgau is clearly not threading the same musical ground that you are, and that doesn't make him a know-nothing - whether I've heard the music that you praise, or you've heard the music that he praises is irrelevant (and again, cf. money issue) - you probably don't need to hear Old 97s' latest one to know that it's not gonna be up your alley, and likewise for me and the latest Brit/techno/industrial/dub/Tool/metal/art-noise wonder (though I'd happily give a chance to the records on your 2001 list by Air, Radiohead, the Avalanches and Basement Jaxx - or practically anyone, really - if I were to get them for free).
Actually so far in 2001 I have only managed to buy 30-40 new albums, although I have sampled many other artists through mp3 downloads, radio, free cd samplers from magazines etc
(So yes I do understand the money element is an obvious constraint, however a person like Christgau though would get most review copies free and IMHO he still manages to miss out on many other options, and celebrates the most obvious/higher profile artists)
As I have just added to the forthcoming albums 2001 ILM thread: I wish had more money to buy more albums! but being better informed about what is available enables me to prioritize what to buy.
However, in the I Listened to Everything Race, DJ Martian is clearly second only to Xgau, and only because he's a bit younger...

My bad. I was wondering how it was even physically possible to have listened to enough 2001 records to have a 250-best list, thinking maybe DJ Martian days last 96 hours or something. But anyway, the part of my Introduce Yourselves post that you didn't quote is about how I have a huge musical appetite and curiosity, and that bit is at least as important as the Clash/Springsteen/Stones/dadrock part - I genuinely would love to hear a lot more music than I do get to hear, and in a broader range of genres too.
Um. I may have made it up. But you know that rubber novelty toy which you squeeze and its mouth and eyes bulge out all pointy: that's POOT! also...

ILM influences my record buying to the extent that it helps me keep up with shifts / new artists in genres I already love (basically house - but that's a wide pallette), and generally become interested in an artist through ILM repition of a name on multiple threads (like Ada)
