I think asides liquid liquid and ESG there might be some 'a certain ratio' songs that might fit within the three genres.

fuckin love 'beat bop' so much

Hey Hey It's A Blackface Incident (haitch), Thursday, 8 October 2009 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

Will we then have a poll choosing the best one? Or why limit it to 50?

Moka, Thursday, 8 October 2009 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Also is there any Ian Dury song that could fit here? I know he's not NYC but somehow I got reminded of him by listening to some of the examples so far.

Moka, Thursday, 8 October 2009 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

I'll be shocked if we actually hit 50.

Maybe we've got a chance if we all cheat by adding bands which are not from the early-80s. Or NYC. Or punk and disco and hiphop.

Moka, Thursday, 8 October 2009 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

late 70s should count imo

psychgawsple, Thursday, 8 October 2009 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

Rammellzee + K-Rob - "Beat Bop"

If you cats are going to contest the inclusion of the Bush Tetras, then let me fire back. "Beat Bop" is an awesome track, but I don't hear much punk therein.

That Ian Dury mention upthread reminds me of "Reasons to Be Cheerful Pt. 3." "Spasticus Autisticus" sort of fits, too.

bamcquern, Thursday, 8 October 2009 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, and Pigbros w/ Membranes cover of "Word Up." Do these have to be from New York? Cause then forget it.

bamcquern, Thursday, 8 October 2009 05:59 (fifteen years ago)

prob not early-80s either considering the OG "Word Up" came out in '86

hood acumen (The Reverend), Thursday, 8 October 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

Fwiw, I think NYC is the least important part of this. I mean, fuck if I'm going to say Malcolm McLaren doesn't belong in this thread.

I don't know what number we're in....

Moka, Thursday, 8 October 2009 06:58 (fifteen years ago)

The Disco Not Disco and Mutant Sounds compilations are a good starting point for this sort of thing iirc. There's hardly any strictly hip hop tunes in there but they are definitely grounded in some sort of funk-soul-disco influence which blends fine when paired with any hip hop song from the epoch.

Moka, Thursday, 8 October 2009 07:03 (fifteen years ago)

A very silly thread but:

50. Bambaataa/Zulu Nation/Cosmic Force: "Zulu Nation Throw Down"

I think would be kinda stretching it to even say Planet Rock is disco. Or at least I don't hear anything particularly disco in it.

Tuomas, Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

he played the mudd club, rocked a mohawk, hung out with john lydon... seems punk enough for me

The version of Private Armies on the New Age Steppers record is a shorten dub version also on the Dirty Washing 12" but the longer version is the best one, imo.
This would be my pick for an Arthur Russell songs that fits disco, punk and rap

Not New York, not really hip-hop (but a lot of it begs to be sampled if it wasn't already), but punk and yes, disco can be heard here:

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Wednesday, 2 September 2015 09:36 (nine years ago)

And though he's not New York, Billy Squier has a few songs that are disco, were sampled by hip-hop artists back in the day, and some riffs that were at least as punky as they were funky. I'm hard-pressed to come up with one song that combined all of it, though I think this comes closest.

I want to fit this in as well... It's New York (Long Island)! It's disco and hip-hop! It's kinda punk (in that I can totally hear a ska-punk band cover this unironically)! It's '70s though.
