The Raincoats

There's individual album threads, there's a couple of Taking Sides threads, there's song threads, but there's no just straight up Raincoats thread, thus.

Not at all inspired by the fact that I saw them last night. And that among other photos I was able to get this one of Ana da Silva that I think might be one of the best I've ever taken anywhere:

It's all great, even the reunion album. Good to see them pop up on critical punk/indie compilations over the years, it's easy for bands like this to sink in the tides of time.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 12 October 2009 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

reissue the complete version of Moving, please please please. it makes me very sad that it was marred by some sort of revisionist split within the band.

that's cool that they're playing gigs again. the reunion album really is quite good.

sleeve, Monday, 12 October 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

Nice pic. They play Portland tomorrow.

fuckin a, we are so there. (xps)

sleeve, Monday, 12 October 2009 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

You're going to have to make fun of me Ned. It's at a club much too small for the show, with way over-hyped support. I wouldn't mind seeing Raincoats, but that's going to be a scene and a half and I don't want to deal with it. I'm going to heavy metal bowling night instead.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 01:10 (fifteen years ago)

Since nobody's mentioned it yet, there's a reissue of the s/t album coming out soon- CD on Rough Trade, US LP on Kill Rock Stars, dunno about domestic CD.

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

xp - funny, they played in SF at a venue that was a bit too big for the show.

sarahel, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

got a bad head cold and the wife is also burned out so thank you Nate for your warning, if I go anywhere it'll be to the coast for R&R. bummer but oh well.

sleeve, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

Is this the place where I say that Odyshape is just the best record ever? And that more people need to be aware of this.

a bleak, sometimes frightening portrait of ceiling cat (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

saw them last night at Part Time Punks LA and met them this morning while checking out of the hotel. Incredibly sweet people.

What's the story with Moving? I have the 10 track DGC CD from the 90s and have always loved it.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

Can't wait to see them tonight--first show I'll have been to in many months, maybe a year. Even Holocene hipsters won't phase me.

And agreed, 'Odyshape' is one of the top 10 albums of 1981. . .

Soundslike, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 06:53 (fifteen years ago)

What's the story with Moving? I have the 10 track DGC CD from the 90s and have always loved it.

it's missing 3 tracks from the original Rough Trade LP, iirc the ones that were written by whoever didn't join the reunion. dunno whether it was her idea or the other ones, but the album suffers greatly without "Honey Mad Woman" and "Dreaming In The Past". "Avidoso" I could live without, true.

sleeve, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

also 1st track on the DGC CD is the B-side of a single, not originally on the LP.

sleeve, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

And speaking of Part Time Punks LA, my thoughts (on the Raincoats and a lot of other folks).

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Do they all live in the US now or something? Why no UK shows :(

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

More money to be made over there?

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

They're only doing four shows in the U.S., I think--the Pacific Northwest shows because it's Kill Rock Stars that's reissuing? Or perhaps I invented that.

Soundslike, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for the heads up, i didn't even know they were playing. now trying to figure out if i can make it to friday's show.

"got a bad head cold and the wife is also burned out so thank you Nate for your warning, if I go anywhere it'll be to the coast for R&R. bummer but oh well."

If I was single, nothing could keep me from going there.

"Even Holocene hipsters won't phase me."

I don't care about hipsters. I care about all the people who just want to get drunk and dance.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

I think Part Time Punks maybe initiated getting them over here, then it was just obvious to hit a few other US cities.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, that was just wonderful. Wonderful music, and these are wonderful people. I was grinning ear-to-ear the whole night, and they genuinely seemed to be very much enjoying themselves.

such a great track, favourite on that album after 'the void'

nakhchivan, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 09:52 (fifteen years ago)

The Void is amazing.

The bleedin' Raincoats are only going and playing live in the UK WHILE I AM IN THE US. This has been arranged just to annoy me.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 09:54 (fifteen years ago)

Their "Lola" is one of those rare covers that retroactively improves the original. nothing against the Kinks, who I love, but switching the gender of the singer transforms that song.

elephant rob, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

Seeing them live a few months ago, they hadn't lost a thing. It's clear they're both some of the nicest and coolest people. Those post-punks just age better than most "rockers".

Soundslike, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

I would like this band better if they could sing.

mo radalj, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

Personal favourite, and one of punk's (or post-punk's, if you insist) greatest: "No Looking."

I've long loved "Off Duty Trip." Whole first album is ridiculously classic imo.

Glad to hear, sad I couldn't make it!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 18 September 2011 07:11 (thirteen years ago)

New reissue of Odyshape sounds great. Kill Rock Stars is promoting it, but emphasizing it's the band's release, not the labels. Great job, sisters! I never P&J reissues of (even relatively) well-known albums with no bonus tracks, but this 'un demands it. Nothing else like it among the new product, far as I've heard. Which is my main Top Ten requirement: when you want a certain kick, only a certain release will do.

dow, Sunday, 18 September 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

I just have an old reissue, will have to check out the bonus tracks somewhere online if they're available

curmudgeon, Monday, 19 September 2011 02:46 (thirteen years ago)

Listening to Moving for the first time ever today. I always thought it was supposed to be weaker than the first two, but I'm absolutely loving this.

Dan is a ‪#‎VegetablePuppet‬, he is NOT REAL. ‪#‎flatearth (Dan Peterson), Friday, 3 June 2016 20:16 (nine years ago)

They're playing a gig in London in a few weeks. It clashes with another band from that era who don't play very often, the Scientists, who I also love and have also never seen before. What a dilemma.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 3 June 2016 20:21 (nine years ago)

I would love to see a Raincoats reunion.

Dan is a ‪#‎VegetablePuppet‬, he is NOT REAL. ‪#‎flatearth (Dan Peterson), Friday, 3 June 2016 20:25 (nine years ago)

Me too. They usually only play festival gigs it seems so this is a bit of a rarity.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 3 June 2016 20:26 (nine years ago)

Okay, I just got to the song that goes "hip hop hip hop hop" and I guess I can see where people who love the abrasiveness of the first two might find this a little too slick, or reggaefied, or Tom Tom Clubby, but this is still right up my alley. It reminds me of Frank Chickens.

Of interest but the first sentence needs revision:

"My affection for blank technician Bernard Sumner as singer-guitarist rests on anonymously he expresses him as vocalist and on his guitar"

Also 12 is a plain old dozen, not a baker's dozen.

Just finishing the book. I think it's pretty good, learned some background I didn't know (hard-to-please John Lydon turned to jello), but I don't think it's great. I have a built-in bias, having been turned down for one of these 10+ years ago. Thinking about how complicated their proposal protocol has gotten over the years (never tried a second time), I would love to see the proposal for this one. I can't see it in the book. "Well, I'll talk about the songs, and I'll work in short bios of the band members, and I'll interview a few newer people about the album, and, uh, yeah."
