Dizzee Rascal Singles Poll

Seems like with three #1 singles, this is the right time to poll the Dizzee back catalog. Sorry, Jaxx fans, I thought about including "Lucky Star" but it was really not a Dizzee single... was it?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

this is one of the easiest polls I've ever taken

RETARTED (HI DERE), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

voted dream.

i luv u (edit) is better than the album version just cos it omits the last unnecessary verse.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

my top 6 -

I Luv U
Stand Up Tall
Dream
Off 2 Work
Pussyole (Old Skool)
Flex

i wish flex had done better.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

I wish some of the BIDC album tracks had been singles! "Jezebel" and "Wot U On" would have made me rethink.

RETARTED (HI DERE), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

"I Luv U," followed by "Dream," but I loooove "Dirtee Cash."

Roman Polanski now sleeps in prison. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

voted dream.

i luv u (edit) is better than the album version just cos it omits the last unnecessary verse.

Doesn't that mean you loose: "that girl gives bj's at all times"?

Anyway, yes - easiest poll ever.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 16 October 2009 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah it's a Stand Up Tall no-brainer.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 October 2009 13:44 (fifteen years ago)

just cos it omits the last unnecessary verse

you mean the "i'm articulate i'm not an idiot" bit? that is SO necessary

nothing he does will top I Luv U for me anyway (runner-up is either Stand Up Tall or Flex)

modescalator (blueski), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:44 (fifteen years ago)

"Stand Up Tall" and "Dream" are both pretty fucking excellent but it will always be "I Luv U" for me, now and always.

RETARTED (HI DERE), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

Stand Up Tall!

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wait no, Pussyole!

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

Oh how do I decide?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

Pussyole might be my second choice actually, mostly because it's the most fun to dance to.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 October 2009 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

1. i luv u
2. flex
3. pussyole (old skool)
4. stand up tall
5. jus' a rascal
6. dirtee cash
7. fix up look sharp
8. dream
9. off 2 work
10. graftin'
11. sirens
12. bonkers
13. dance wiv me
14. holiday

lex pretend, Friday, 16 October 2009 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

has to be "i luv u," but i think "sirens" is getting underrated here.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

"you mean the "i'm articulate i'm not an idiot" bit?"

yep thats the one. dunno what the point of that was.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

It sounds really good?

Matt DC, Friday, 16 October 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

it doesnt fit, yo.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

what happened to that girl

modescalator (blueski), Friday, 16 October 2009 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

dunno but shes dressed kinda weirdly for the video

shes from some freemans catalogue

hes from dark n cold

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

I Luv You prob the best argument for high school music lessons. Lex's ranking pretty close to how I'd do it, swap out the shit Jus A Rascal for Sirens and it could be any of those top five.

ogmor, Friday, 16 October 2009 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

Who needs Gucci Mane when you've got this poll?

ogmor, Friday, 16 October 2009 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

ilx needs a gucci mayne vs dizzee poll.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Stand Up Tall you guys! I mean I Luv U is amazing and a transmission from another planet and etc but it is also kinda hard to listen to all the way through, while Stand Up Tall is the one perfect pop rap record that really really does manage to keep all the best bits of both.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 16 October 2009 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

i luv u is sooooo not hard to listen to all the way thru

just sayin, Friday, 16 October 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

is is AWESOME to listen to all the way thru

just sayin, Friday, 16 October 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

dizzee = best singles artist of the decade.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 16 October 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

voted "dream" but i think "learn" is my favorite off showtime.

"where da G's" wasn't a single?

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 16 October 2009 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

"where da G's" wasn't a single?

Unfortunately, no. And I would consider voting for it if it was.

i-i-i poll u

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 October 2009 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

1. jus a rascal
2. i luv u
3. fix up look sharp
4. pussyole
5. stand up tall

groovemaaan, Friday, 16 October 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

I like Stand Up Tall like Beavis&Butthead like Creep, except instead of offsetting a rock chorus w/a lame verse, Dizzee shows his superiority to Radiohead circa 1992 by offsetting the (great) verse using synth plucked strings which is kind of a Richard D James move, unexpected&more welcome than a shit bit. I heard Dizzee hid a Gucci diss in this song, the synth beep when he starts rapping is morse code but I can't work it out, anyone?

ogmor, Friday, 16 October 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

"where da G's" wasn't a single?

Thought they might have released it in the US but perhaps not. UGK have/had virtually zero profile over here and in any case they didn't release the Lily Allen collaboration despite her being a massive pop/tabloid star in this country.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 October 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

not releasing the lily allen collab was just baffling.

POX dizz album trax!

1. stop dat
2. everywhere

this thread is reminding me that there is a ton of Dizzee shit I need to pick up

RETARTED (HI DERE), Friday, 16 October 2009 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

I've heard that "Road Rage" may be the next single...

xpost

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 16 October 2009 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

the moment when dizz switches to dancefloor mcing at the end of "stop dat" is def one of his finest moments ever

girls, ladies, do the butterfly

don't ask me who, where, when or why
wanna see your batty rise right up to the sky

lex pretend, Friday, 16 October 2009 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'd assume "road rage" would be a single but, not yet

lex pretend, Friday, 16 October 2009 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

I think that by now Dizzee's just playing at how many successive number one singles he can release.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 October 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

also essential - "creeper"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni9VmkX2BwE

lex pretend, Friday, 16 October 2009 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

Oh jesus do we even have to bring up Radiohead in a Dizzee thread???

"the moment when dizz switches to dancefloor mcing at the end of "stop dat" is def one of his finest moments ever"

so OTM

i wouldve voted the lilly collabo if they released it

the whole fallout with him and XL is kinda weird - they im guessing wanted him to keep doing weirder shit, and he knowing that weirder shit would only get him so far, wanted to go full on commercial. but they still could have released the song with lilly. if flex had done better, he might not have had to sink to collabos with calvin harris.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

tho why there is a post about stop dat here i dunno cos it was never a single...

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 16 October 2009 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

this is better than every single song mentioned on this thread:

the label encouraging the artist to make less commercial music against their will? doesn't make any sense at all

apart from "dirtee cash", the singles off the new album are TERRIBLE

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

maybe you are ok with calvin harris's existence but if so there are deeper issues to be addressing really

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

To me Dizzee hasn't "evolved," so that's a good thing.

threesome dude (The Reverend), Saturday, 17 October 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

"the label encouraging the artist to make less commercial music against their will? doesn't make any sense at all"

it doesnt (esp as its not like xl is above signing blatantly commercial stuff, ie adele) but how else would you explain the weird way his contract with them has ended up? he offered them dance wiv me but they turned it down, presumably because they thought it was either shit/too commercial? he gave them his biggest single to date, with a chorus from someone who was already chart-proven, but they didnt want it. i cant think of any other reason other than they werent interested in him anymore cos he wasnt making 'interesting' music.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 19 October 2009 11:19 (fifteen years ago)

he's definitely still got some sort of relationship with xl - at least, they've been handling his press for the new album.

that line of thinking would explain why the lily collab was never a single, i guess. if it's true then xl otm about "dance wiv me"

lex pretend, Monday, 19 October 2009 11:21 (fifteen years ago)

"Stand Up Tall you guys! I mean I Luv U is amazing and a transmission from another planet and etc but"
^ Grav Puz otm (up to here anyhow)

ein fisch schwimmt im wasser · fisch im wasser durstig (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 19 October 2009 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

i think hes still cool with xl, prob uses their connections, he just doesnt release music through them anymore. quite odd. xl prob dont mind pop like adele but if its urban music they only respect/want it if its a bit 'different'. which dance wiv me, definitely isnt.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 19 October 2009 11:40 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's quite likely that Calvin Harris's people would let XL release a single with his name on it?

Matt DC, Monday, 19 October 2009 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

never said they wouldnt.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 19 October 2009 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, I meant likely they wouldn't be able to release it.

Matt DC, Monday, 19 October 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah down here at least "Dance Wiv Me" was billed as a Calvin single featuring Dizzee.

I can imagine XL not being against Lily Allen collab-os per se but feeling that it would clash with their overall marketing strategy for the album and "confuse" the market. Up to that point Dizzee seems to have had most commercial success with fairly aggressive singles. I can't remember now whether that album dropped before or after "Wearing My Rolex".

Tim F, Monday, 19 October 2009 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

before. the Harris name vs other label shouldn't really be an issue - aren't trans-label collabs like this par for the course in the States? best explanation yet tho. i just figured XL were getting a cut via Dirtee Stank, handling distribution or something.

modescalator (blueski), Monday, 19 October 2009 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for 'Bonkers', grime and Lex both sucks, as usual!

I'd forgotten how sweet and awesome "Dream" is

(still the correct answer is "I Luv U")

'i luv u' is - if considered, like it utterly ought to be, as one with its remix - probably the single of the decade, but i voted 'fix up' for the fun of it. FLUSHIN MCS DOWN THE LOO, IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME BRING YOUR POSSE BRING YOUR CREW

r|t|c, Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

relieved to find the chorus of 'stand up tall' where it goes all dave kelly still as magical as ever, though.

r|t|c, Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

FEEL FREE TO HATE CUZ I AIN'T TRYNA BE UR MATE

in these polls i always take as implied each single with its associated remixes. (also u&k: that remix of "i luv u" with vitalic's "poney part 1")

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 October 2009 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

i love pulse x = beat of the decade

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

in these polls i always take as implied each single with its associated remixes. (also u&k: that remix of "i luv u" with vitalic's "poney part 1")

broadly speaking i disagree with this practice tbh; whenever i make this point about 'i luv u' it's to emphasise how singularly distinct the remix is from merely being a remix per se. to have called it "part 2" might have been better, but even then that doesnt quite capture the extent to which it runs parallel - is already entwined into - the original. it's a rare and precious thing.

r|t|c, Thursday, 22 October 2009 10:48 (fifteen years ago)

funnily enough another great example of this came to mind reading deej on the sfj thread remembering sanneh breaking down jay-z wrt status vs hedonism:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2AykmcsYow

(funny thing happens, with years of chasing money and hoes / and the only thing that's worse than getting old is not getting old , poignant today eh)

r|t|c, Thursday, 22 October 2009 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

never totally got all the fuss over the i luv u remix compared to the original - do love the beat but wouldnt mind hearing those lyrics on the original beat. its a bit too simple cos theres so few words in each bar.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 22 October 2009 11:13 (fifteen years ago)
