Watch out for Karl and the Jump Up and Downs which is the new music band i startled with my little bitch of a girlfriend.

Karl J Kretzschmar, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that would depend on where 'local' is

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if local is san francisco, then the answer is the cuts. saw them at the cafe du nord last night for the first time and was very impressed.

Youngblood Brass Band, now on Def Jux.

I live near Charles Hayward. He played a phenomenal set on Saturday night at a local theatre; two drum kits plus a mad-looking woman twiddling knobs on a laptop. [this was notable for the fact that the 'laptop music' was not intrusive, was actually complementary and used in an interesting way.] He's so excellent - I've seen him three tiems now and he's different every time. The other local band of note - this time genuinely local, as the singer lives on my street - is called Minnow. They make trippy-hoppy kind of stuff and have signed to Duophonic.

Aviodable Droid and Karaoke for My Shadow both kick rather a large chunk of bottom:

http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Movie/9629/index.html

which is the label both have put stuff out on.

Andrew, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

arcade fire out of montreal-seriously i can't get enough of them. they have a site somewhere

ddd, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ddd - like i said in the last thread, dave, you're right on. arcadefire.com

sean, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

holy shit, Youngblood on Def Jux now? that should be intersting.

Planet Janet, an amazing power pop band from New Jersey:

Prude, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Baltimore = Oxes

Lee G, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Melbourne's great white hope at the moment is Love Of Diagrams. They'll be bigger (or not) than the Vines in no time...

electric sound of jim, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bedroom heroes

xi, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how the hell did the vines get so big anyway? do they play in the same town as the legends of motorsport, who are quite good...

Andrew, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Vines have never played anywhere in Australia outside of Sydney that I'm aware. They have excellent management and a major label budget, with those things you can do anything.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I have high hopes for DC's Black Eyes.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 3 October 2002 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

NYC = The Square Johns. Haven't released anything yet as far as I know.

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 4 October 2002 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

DC = POEM-CEES. New release due out December 4.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparentlly, The Laze. Never actually heard them, but they have nice cover art, and my flatmate's friends with one of them, so...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Er not so local cos he's from Belfast, and not so up and coming cos he's already released a few singles, but Phil Kieran is the best thing that's ever come out of Ireland.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 October 2002 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
I just played a show with this Brooklyn band called Bear in Heaven and holy shit they were awesome. Their opener was like this weird mix of dance punk, prog and "Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who (I don't know a better way to describe that keyboard effect where you hold down the chords and it plays a consistent rhythm). Incredible drummer too.

They do have a myspace page but it REALLY REALLY doesn't do them justice -- in fact I think this might be from the guy's older project because it doesn't really sound much like what I heard last night.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

my favorite new local band is pink socks. they are high school kidz here on the island and they sound like interpol + gentle giant. or something. they are the new progcore:

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 January 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Awww, 2002 Arcade Fire love upthread = cute.

As for NYC 2006, I'm pretty fucking excited about Doveman. Mazzy Star meets broken Parisian jazz with big stretches of white noise (at least live) and breathless Drake-like vocals. And I usually hate breathless Drake-like vocals.

Wrote them up on Pitchfork, not sure if it helped.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'll also continue to say Mike Wexler. Supposed to have a full-length coming out this year.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

i like bear in heaven, mike wexler i found was boring live. maybe his album will be good. doveman is really slow, but it grows on me. joseph cotten, who are ou on pitchfork, i've never read about doveman over there...

hmmmmmm, Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

He's been uneven live when I've seen him. He was much better the time I saw him with the other guy on piano. I don't like the whole "shrouded in darkness" schtick he does. The EP is really good though -- one of my favorite things from last year.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

i saw him with grizzly bear and scoutt nibblett and pretty much loved the whole evening. there was one song he played that got me excited, and I generally enjoyed it, but it was nothing to me compared to the following 2 acts . all in all i think he's interesting and got some good stuff to offer

hmmmmmm, Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

That piano player is also in The Occasion, which is another NYC band I think is quite good.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

never saw them live. or heard recordings. i'm confused, what piano player?

hmmmmmm, Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Mike Wexler has a piano player on his EP who, at least once, has also played with him live. Maybe he doesn't usually do it because most places don't have a piano, or maybe he just stopped doing it. I dunno.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/d/doveman/acrobat.shtml

They're very uneven live, true. They can be sleepy and halfass and way too polite. But the last show I've seen, at Tonic, they turned up the volume a bit and just killed. It was the first time I noticed they have two potential radio hits ("Boy + Angel" and a fast version of "Clouds").

I don't mind the low-light schtick, frankly. Is it even schtick when it's completely appropriate for the music?

Of course, lest I come across as an altruist, it needs to be noted that my band is spine-meltingly brilliant. And playing Tonic next Thursday! Oh my! etc.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, the Occasion (x-post). Great band. I guess I figured they were exposed enough by now to place out of the "local" category, but I may be wrong. I didn't know they share a member with Doveman. (More incest: Thomas the singer-pianist is, correct me if I'm wrong, Mike Doughty's keyboardist).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

oh i love your reviews and taste !! i'm going to check out your band now. i remember noting your top CDs of the year and thinking how you caught on to a lot of bands I love that pfork doesn't seem to latch on to much...

i have to see doveman. I really want to love it, but some of the songs drag a bit for me, but I need to give it morre time, bc it's generally the type of music I like

hmmmmmm, Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

oh i've heard of spielrfrau and good things too!

i'll be sure to check it out soon

hmmmmmm, Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Well, while we're spamming, I'll also plug my band:

http://www.myspace.com/americanaltitude

Joe Cotten is playing both sides, I see.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

We're NPR rock.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

at least we aren't amy goodman rock.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Joe Cotten is playing both sides, I see.

My ultimate goal being to give myself 0.9 on Pitchfork.

Speaking of NPR rock, Doveman would fit that definition perfectly! They do have that Edgiest Band Your Aunt Ever Liked quality.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

To change the subject, any fans of La Laque? (good French lyrics over unholy surf-MBV hybrid).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

my favorite bay area band is Black Fiction, a kind of cross b/w early beck, prince, and something else. Their record ( some tracks here: http://www.myspace.com/blackfictionband)doesn't convey how insane they are live.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 22 January 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Clicked. Listened. Prominent glockenspiel = major bonus points!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 22 January 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

They sound like they need a little seasoning but could turn out to be pretty good.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 22 January 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Any excuse to shill my brother-in-law's band then:

Circlesound

'Curt' Russell (noodle vague), Sunday, 22 January 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Geoff Reacher is one of the best things going on here in Athens that almost nobody knows about. http://www.reachers.com/ is kind of ugly, but I just discovered you can download two ENTIRE albums there... as single MP3s. Uh, well, whatever. The first song on You Like My Song pretty much encapsulates why I love Geoff's approach to the pitfall-laden "one man band with beats and guitars" thing: he truly loves crafting the beats, he's deeply in love with his pitchbender (with apparently no sense at all that it's cheesy), and he manages to get away with loving hip-hop and country just as much and not having it be some grotesque fratty waste of time. YMMV. Also see "Paranoia Is Fame" on History Will Absolve Me, which is built around a sample of Dylan's "New Pony" and is spiced up with bits of "Destroyer" by the Kinks...

Um, someone who's probably a little more up and coming in terms of small-time record label momentum is Madeline Adams. Unfortunately her website (http://www.madelinesongs.com/) is painfully out of date and doesn't even showcase the best material from her old CD. If anyone's interested I can upload one or two other things - basically she does a shockingly good (emilys: "Bone-crushingly talented") take on the "plays acoustic guitar and sings" thing. Nothing too fancy in production or arrangement, but the songs are hooky as hell, her voice is clear and sweet as a bell, and her lyrics are often quite affecting and only rarely fall into overstated emphasis... really ace.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

i think that 'taughtme' is pretty great. a nice mixture of acoustic and electronic instruments w/ wistful, dreamy vocals. they've got a few comparisons to xiu xiu, but i dunno about that.

One Jersey band I like a lot is Roadside Graves:

http://www.myspace.com/roadsidegraves

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

I guess you could call them "alt-country" but the difference being that they're fun.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

The Oktober People are a great post-rock band from Albuquerque. Their self-released album is a thing of purity and beauty. Still not on a label, this world isn't fair.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 23 January 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

These guys are pretty good -- not my kind of thing but pretty good. It's not very post-rocky for post-rock.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

Ach! From the local music desk here in the Metro Detroit area... I'm not sure how small a band has to be to get plugged here (and "up and coming"?), so I'll leave aside The Dirtbombs and The Paybacks, which are Detroit rock writ large.

Check out The Hard Lessons (their website, at thehardlessons.com, seems to be down for no good reason right now). Think Lucinda Williams meets Peace Love Poetry Italy.

The Avatars are about to release their first album, also on No Fun (the record company of the Hard Lessons). They're a grimy Cheap Trick meets '77 Blondie thing.

We've also got Nomo, a large ensemble afro-jazz band (Fela meets Coltrane on Giant Steps), and The Great Lakes Myth Society, who sound like The Decemberists of the Upper Midwest (or Zombies meeting Gordon Lightfoot). The GLMS is one of those bands that are best to just catch without too many preconceptions, because they're infinitely uncool yet so good at what they do.

Jim Roll's also rumored to be about to put out an album (though I don't know if he's "up and coming" anymore, more like a longstanding cult figure. But he's succumbed to the inherent problem of being a musician who owns his own studio and self-releases albums (after Telegraph imploded): He can take fucking forever to "perfect" things.

Of course, if you guys are still listening, there's plenty more that I can talk about...

js (honestengine), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

Pittsburgh-

Shade- www.shaderocks.com - new album in the works...

Modey Lemon..of course...but they're not 'new' just unlistened to...

I think we played a show with Hunchback. Girl drummer right? Some sort of horror theme? Yeah, they were pretty awesome if that's who you mean.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite lesser known NYC band of the moment is Nuh Uh (check some demos www.nuhuh.com). Long songs that don't feel that long. "Sorry I'm Stuck" is great.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm also way into Pissed Jeans, but they're not exactly a local band to me (they rock Allentown, PA). They remind me of No Trend a little (a very good thing), scuzzy ponk/hardcore mess.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

The P.O.S. album is really, really good. Critics should email the Biz3 immediately.

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

hurto: yeah, dats the hunchback. i work with the guitarist.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

Did they once have a guy who did noise/fx/laptop stuff? I didn't see a picture of him on their site but I knew the guy in college. But I'm getting confused now-- that might have been a different "horror rock" band. Anyway their drummer is really good.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

I mean there is a guy doing that stuff but it's not the guy I know. His name was Alex. I think it was the same band, but I'm sure this guy isn't in the band anymore because he's out of the country.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Roadside Graves are great, as are Modey Lemon.

cdwill, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

there's no laptop, but craig plays synths & electronics.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

Waitaminute waitaminute, yes, I did very vaguely know Craig from school. I'm conflating him and another dude in another band. Is that the dude you work with?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

We just got that P.O.S. album at my radio station, will investigate.
