I'd say closer to the former.

classic. If anything, this is underrated due to its popularity!

the principal rubric of fight club is that we speak not of it

Dominique otm.
Get thee to Mussorgsky's powerful solo piano version. All the orchestral versions are arrangements by others (some of whom were geniuses-- Ravel-- some not so much-- Ashkenazy).

Well, the Ravel orchestration is the one I know. Is the piano version quite rarefied or...?
― Freedom, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 17:51 (fifteen years ago)
That is to say, is it not commonly performed?
― Freedom, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 17:52 (fifteen years ago)
This.

^^^ Yeah that is pretty much the most legendary recording of the solo original.
Prepare for bootleg-quality sound, though. But nobody can touch Richter in this piece.
The solo version is not recorded as often as the Ravel, but still, there are dozens of recordings of it. William Kapell is also quite good (good quality mono sound). I haven't heard a great modern-era recording of it, but there must be one.

Saw a dance performance in a church a couple of years ago where Fennesz played his interpretation of The Rite of Spring, live. Didn't think much of the dance but the music was kind of all-encompassing and terrific.
In highschool "Pictures at an Exhibition" was one of the classical pieces that we learnt about in music class. I thought it was beautiful, don't think I've heard it since though!

Fennesz has created an electronic rendition of the Rite?
― im Haus der Lols (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 18:39 (fifteen years ago)
Yup. Don't think there's a recorded version though.
Not sure if this'll work:http://images.vpro.nl/images/40712211+s(500)
