Such a great record.

The Whores Hustle

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

This is the album that made me realize that I'd always been trying extra hard to like her music, and that I did, in reality, find it boring.

existential eggs (Abbott), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 04:17 (sixteen years ago)

So many people liked her so much, and I realized finally it was ok that I didn't.

lol it never fails to amaze me that this record usually seems to be furthest from the favourite, when i think it's her best set of songs, and by a screaming country mile her best recordings.

big exit gets my vote, love the riff and it's one of my favourite openers of all time.. my immediate reaction to it was much the same as when i heard sleater-kinney's "start together" - i just knew it was gonna be a good record.

i don't care how pop it is, I <3 you said something 4vrnvr

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

This was her "I'll write hit songs just to show you I can do it then go back to being weird" record.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 04:54 (sixteen years ago)

best PJ album

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

Voted "We Float," but "Big Exit" is a close second.

Here's a link to a great performance of the latter (from Jools Holland): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRLMH3IyZiI

kshighway1, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 05:33 (sixteen years ago)

One of the first three tracks, I'll have to mull it over.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

All the video of any song from this album is A+.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

"This Is Love" is prolly in my top 10 or 20 songs of the decade.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 06:41 (sixteen years ago)

"This Wicked Tongue" is quite simply magnificent; Polly Jean at her fiercest. (btw, i've noticed that this album can sound boring as shit when played at low to moderate volume, so crank that mother up and be amazed by the majesty that is the Peej.)

wot?? (Ioannis), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 07:09 (sixteen years ago)

definitely her worst album, but still pretty good - when it hits the spot it REALLY hits the spot. "this wicked tongue", "this is love", "big exit".

also search "as close as this", which was a b-side to one of the single - really gorgeous and intimate.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 08:15 (sixteen years ago)

her live performances in this era were astonishingly great though.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 08:15 (sixteen years ago)

we float is my jam.

ABSOLUTELY NO SCRUBS WHATSOEVER, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 08:30 (sixteen years ago)

This was the first PJ album I got, back when it came out, and I adored it. I quickly bought up most of the others (didn't get Dry until quite a bit later as I simply never saw it in shops for some reason). I've not listened to it in quite a while though; I think it suffered in my mind during my dynamic-range-compression crusade. Some awesome songs on here though. I'll relisten before voting.

i have never heard "This Wicked Tongue" as it is not on the American release. do i need to hear that before i vote?

Bee OK, Friday, 23 October 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

I've gone for 'Good Fortune' in the end (but could have gone for any of the first three tracks), because love the "I'd rather have done it with you-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo" bits. I've always felt this album tails off a bit after that. I have no memory whatsoever of a track called 'This Wicked Tongue'.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 23 October 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

yeah can't imagine this record ending w/ anything but We Float

tylerw, Friday, 23 October 2009 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

Definitely "You Said Something" vs "The Whores Hustle" ... but the latter feels a bit too much like a "Rid of Me" song filtered through a guitar pop machine. "You Said Something" is a heartbreaker.

Ever since someone pointed out the similarities between the last two tracks ("We Float", "This Wicked Tongue") Sarah McLaughlan's songs from the same time period, I've been unable to take this album too seriously.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 24 October 2009 02:03 (sixteen years ago)

"We Float" sounds like bad Patti Smith to me.

lihaperäpukamat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 October 2009 02:04 (sixteen years ago)

"This is Love" is my vote -- grrrreat guitar.

lihaperäpukamat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 October 2009 02:04 (sixteen years ago)

man, that was super easy! "good fortune" was the only song on this record i liked/can remember now.

YOUR MOMS SPOT HERON WITH NO HANDS I'M SMACKIN HER (Beatrix Kiddo), Saturday, 24 October 2009 02:06 (sixteen years ago)

"Big Exit," easy - just a fantastic, double-barrel out of the gate opener that sets the reckless-but-vulnerable tone for much of what's to follow. Actually, prob one of my favorite opening tracks period.

you just freaked out more than our director of lols (Pillbox), Saturday, 24 October 2009 02:20 (sixteen years ago)

kamikaze all the way. this album is a little bit boring overall.

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 24 October 2009 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

When I first heard the leaked single for "One Line" and then the actual album, I was "Wtf Polly, pop hooks and nice melodies?" But when my expectations got re-settled, this became my favorite album of hers, especially those first three/four tracks, and all the haters through the years are retarded.

"This Wicked Tongue" is a bonus track on the UK/Japanese versions.

Ever since someone pointed out the similarities between the last two tracks ("We Float", "This Wicked Tongue") [and] Sarah McLaughlan's songs from the same time period

Barry, I can hear the similarity on "We Float" because of the piano, but "This Wicked Tongue"? Really? PJ's voice on that chorus alone should overwhelm any such comparisons. And isn't Is This Desire? more of a Sarah M record, but maybe a little more American Gothic?

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 24 October 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

a girl once dedicated "This Mess We're In" to me and thought it would get my vote no matter what. i instead voted for "Good Fortune" as it was the best song.

Bee OK, Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:45 (sixteen years ago)

her live performances in this era were astonishingly great though

This is true, Margaret Fiedler was in the band when I saw 'em and nearly stole the show.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 26 October 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I think if you voted for the winner here you wanted this to be a different album than it actually was.

Hoot Smalley, Monday, 26 October 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

sold this album for 60 quid on ebay on vinyl. never liked it much before.

the not-fun one (Ioannis), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for it, just because it's the song I like best out of a whole album full of songs I like. I don't think there's a conspiracy.
