For those who weren't around here then, back in 2005 we did a poll on the best singles and albums of the 1980s. The results for the singles poll can be found here. However, for some reason the results for albums poll were never released. Since the guy who did the poll isn't around anymore, we are now redoing the poll. The actual poll will be a closed email poll, but first we will have an open nomination process. So post you nominations in this thread.
Here are the rules for nominations:
* Everyone is allowed to nominate a maximum of 7 albums. (Why 7, you may ask? I just thought 5 would be too little and 10 too much.) You may also nominate less than 7 albums.
* The nomination process will end on Sunday, the 31st of October, at midnight GMT. No nominations after that point.
* You may nominate any album that was first released in the 1980s. Albums which, for example, were released in 1979 in the UK but only in 1980 in the USA (or vice versa) are not valid.
* Multi-artist compilations and mix albums are valid.
* Greatest Hits or Best Of type of single-artist compilations are valid, if they were first released in the 1980s. It doesn't matter if the individual tracks were released before the 1980s.
* "Lost" albums and other such records that were recorded before the 1980s, but only released in that decade, are valid.
* Reissues of albums that were released before the 1980s are not valid.
Go on then, start nominating!

Whoops, sorry, it looks like October 31st is not a Sunday but a Saturday. The nomination time will end on Sunday, November 1st then. I'll ask a mod to correct the thread title.

so how many albums will we be able to put on our ballots when it's time to vote?

I was thinking 10. Or is that too few?

the hissing of summer lawns is from 75 or something
― alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:38 (fifteen years ago)
10 is too few imo. If people are nominating 7, that only gives them 3 other records they love.
Also, Hissing of Summer Lawns is an 80s record?
― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:40 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, Allmusic says 1975. Do you want to replace it with something?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:40 (fifteen years ago)
xp Oh, right re: Hissing of Summer Lawns, all right replace that one withScritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche 85

Abbot, The Dreaming has been already nominated too.
ack, sorry, beefheart already mentioned. great call on In a Special Way, Kevin. guess i'll go with Lou Reed - Legendary Hearts
― outdoor_miner, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago)
Based on running the 60s polls, 10 is far too little. I'd suggest a minimum of 30 and preferably 40 or 50. People don't have to use the allocation if they can't find enough albums they want to vote for.
Will have to have a think about noms.
― go in go hard brother (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, I think 30 or 40 or 50 is way too much. This isn't about voting for every album you like, only for the ones you think really are absolutely the best of the decade.
Maybe 20 is good enough compromise?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

You're saying twenty in order and weighted accordingly, or 20 with each one = 1 point?

― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
20 is perfect but in case of an order the weighing scheme shouldn't be too skewed. the first one 20 points and the last one one point would be not so good. my fave would never be 20 times as good as my no. 20. i am not sure if the poll needs any weighing, actually. what about 50 points you can distribute and the maximum per album would be five. and the minimum one. or something like that. what did we do in the other polls?

― DavidM, Sunday, 1 November 2009 14:26 (fifteen years ago)
It's a pretty good list already ... but I dug up my ballot from the last (unfinished) 80's poll and want to nominate some albums that I voted for the last time :)

It'll End in Tears has already been nominated, so you have one more nomination to use.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 16:09 (fifteen years ago)
A few more non-valid entries:
* The B-52's - The B-52's. This album is from 1979.
* Rites of Spring - End on End. All sources I checked say this a compilation that came out in 1991.
* Liquid Liquid - Successive Reflexes. This is an EP, so it's not valid.
People who nominated those can nominate something else instead.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

No one likes Synchronicity :(
― billstevejim, Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)
Tuomas, if its not too much trouble, I'd like to retract my nomination for Big Black - Songs about Fucking (Upon relistening, Atomizer is more than "Kerosene"), and substitute in its place Ry Cooder - Paris, Texas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.
― Deliquescing (Derelict), Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:14 (fifteen years ago)
Or not: retractions would lead to all sorts of problems if it became the general rule. Your call.
― Deliquescing (Derelict), Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

Damn.. that was fast! And I'm pretty sure I would vote for Different Light.
― billstevejim, Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:24 (fifteen years ago)
If I knew someone was gonna retract their "Songs About Fucking" nomination, I would've done it.
― billstevejim, Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago)
Actually, I just went through the ballot I sent in 4 years ago and nominated the stuff that wasn't up there yet. Mighty Lemon Drops just missed the cut, unfortunately.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago)
am i the only one that prefers mister heartbreak to the two other laurie anderson albums nominated?
― psychgawsple, Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago)
Tuomas, thanks for doing this. I think you forgot to add my nod for Television Personalities' The Painted Word.
Also, I'll nominate Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush the Show

ohhhand Kate Bush - The Sensual World
― ben folds' cover of "such great heights" (Tape Store), Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:58 (fifteen years ago)
Rites Of Spring's "End On End" is a reissue of their 1985 album with four bonus tracks, pretty sure the S/T album is what was intended there.
― sleeve, Sunday, 1 November 2009 20:08 (fifteen years ago)
billstevejim's comment is why I retract my retraction request, its unfair to others who nominated after me, and would lead to a cascading effect. The Paris, Texas OST should have more fans, though.
― Deliquescing (Derelict), Sunday, 1 November 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago)
Kate Bush - The Sensual World
phew, that was a narrow squeak
― DavidM, Sunday, 1 November 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
Sorry about that, I added it to the list.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 21:33 (fifteen years ago)
Lori & The Chameleons - I Love, I Love, I Love Japan EP
Turangalila, I didn't add this to the list, because the title clearly says it's an EP, and EPs aren't valid. You still have 3 nominatios to use.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 21:35 (fifteen years ago)
Okay, I added Rites of Spring's self-titled album to the list. Mordy, if this isn't what you intended, and you want to change it to something else, let me know.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
Only a 2 hours and 20 minutes time left, now is the final chance to nominate!
Looks like our list is already bigger and more comprehensive than the one in the 2005 poll, so you've done well! But there's still time to add some more albums to it.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 21:44 (fifteen years ago)
I suddenly felt bad that there's no LouJag around lately. Would've liked to see his 80s picks.
Anyway, there's already a load of stuff nominated that I love and still more I haven't heard but would probably like, so, looking forward to it.
― subtyll cauillacyons (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 1 November 2009 21:59 (fifteen years ago)
I'm going to go to sleep soon, so I won't be around when it's 12 o'clock GMT. So if there's still some nominations before tomorrow morning, I'm willing to accept them. I'll post here when I wake up to let you know nomination time has ended.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:27 (fifteen years ago)
Is Louis coming back? I'd've liked to see his comedy 80s picks too.
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:29 (fifteen years ago)
If hes around online someone could post them on his behalf?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:31 (fifteen years ago)
I'm fine with that.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago)
he's not on msn or aim
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:42 (fifteen years ago)
How do you chaps find the time for multiple online presences?
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:43 (fifteen years ago)
Time's up, huh?
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 2 November 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, the S|T is what I intended. My copy is the End of End version, so that's the name I went with, but it's the Self-Titled.
― Mordy, Monday, 2 November 2009 05:54 (fifteen years ago)
Okay, nomination time is up! No more nominations, I'll start a voting thread later today. Thanks for everyone who contributed to this!
― Tuomas, Monday, 2 November 2009 08:28 (fifteen years ago)
The voting thread is here.
― alex in mainhattan, Monday, 2 November 2009 12:22 (fifteen years ago)
