Easily one of my favorite bands of all time, this's a tricky choice for me.....but I'm going to have to go with "Respectable Street" off BLACK SEA, when they were still full of rankourous guitar clamour.

Dear God ... maybe Sarah's version though ... i like the sentiment

"Earn Enough For Us"...great sentiment, a melody for the ages, great guitar.

I think "Senses Working Overtime" is one of The Great Singles Ever. Largely because they're rocking it nearly every other time I go into a comic book store/card shop/nerd-type place, and, yeah man, those are my people.

"Desert Island"

"Sergeant Rock (Is Going To Help Me)" (make the goo-url moyne...)

I agree with Keiko on this, "Senses working overtime" is a great record especially in the context of the musical climate of the time (mainstream pop i mean) but my absolute favourite has to be "Neon shuffle"

"Gonna do it to me" "Gonna do it to you" "Gonna do it to red" "Gonna do it for blue" "Gonna run you right through" "With a stick of bamboo"

Impossible really! XTC's singles collection is truly wonderful. First time i got it out of the record library I couldn't get past the first CD because there was just so much great stuff. I kept listening to it over and over again.

roads girdle the globe
other than the dukes album, did they get this heavy again?

"Burning With Optimism's Flame", because it sounded like the band really were doing so when they recorded it it's such an 'up' song and also I'm a sucker for lyrics that cram as many words as possible into the line of the song without any punctuation whatsoever before the singer runs out of breath and lure you away with sweets and shiny things just like a magpie. *GASP*

"Summar's Cauldron" makes me go all Carmody-like cos of its incredible sense-of-English-placeness.

almost impossible and accordingly i bagsy an alan and a colin song - and neither from my favourite album - "white music" - or their best (IMHO) "apple venus 1" - and in fact from one of their worst albums as a whole. but it has to be "wrapped in grey" and ESPECIALLY the wonder that is "bungalow"

Pink Thing - the world needs more songs where the singer has a less Jim Morrison-esque relationship with his penis.

Winkelmann

I'd have to go with something off English Settlement, definitely - probably "Senses Working Overtime."

mike, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in the same vein of "pink thing", we also have "my brown guitar" which i think is far better in every way...

damn, i thought i was being original by nominating "Respectable Street" until i noticed that it was in the original question. what an album opener, and hooky as anything too. and scratchy piano intros. damn. i have to go home and listen to that RIGHT NOW.
