is "tv on the radio" the only current "rock" act doing "new" things while still maintaining recognizable "songs" and "singing"?

I like TVOTR and everything but "new" is a red herring as a barometer of quality.

also they sound like Peter Gabriel.

just start w/ first album and go from there?

nice email (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 23 October 2009 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

(I'm 100% serious about the Peter Gabriel comparison btw - lots of similar weirdo dystopian lyrics and vocal hooks matched against chugging synths with rhythms lifted from r&b, tribal rhythms, funk, etc.)

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 October 2009 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

i have written some recognizable "songs" with "singing" that are "rock" and "new"; i sing them in the bathtub

wtf.. why do "new" things matter? just write some songs that don't suck and produce them so that they sound their best.

billstevejim, Saturday, 24 October 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

It's a lot easier to be snobby about things being new because you can get hip points by going "This band is just ripping off [obscure band name I am so cool for knowing]." Not that I don't indulge in this particular sin occasionally.

adamj, Saturday, 24 October 2009 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

are they still doing new things? i thought they stopped with that last album.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 24 October 2009 10:01 (fifteen years ago)

not songs and or singing/rock
no age

not new
broken social scene, boris

never heard them
white denim, future of the left, dd/mm/yyyy, women and fucked up

k in that case disregard fucked up perhaps, because although the lastest album sort of transcends hardcore there still isn't much singing on it. i'd say of all those just check out white denim. the thing about tvotr is they've got all those cool soundscapes that sound really "wow never heard this before" which is maybe sort of a new thing in some ways. white denim do that a bit, but mostly their charm is making these mutated, crooked reformations of rock songs.

Things that sound original (and good) are much more exciting to me. Definitely.

His skin is eroding. His suckers have divots. (chap), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

in rock and roll the majority of what i like is derivative and unoriginal. somehow i'm more likely to listen to a band that takes an older preexisting style and adapts it to modern standards of songwriting or experimentation than one that sounds modern and recognizably original because they use new technologies or avoid genre association. but i think the way tvotr are most obviously original is much less interesting, a much more surface-level originality, than just the fact that they have a unique sense of melody and dude has a weird way of singing.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think I can participate in this poll because the question is too hard for me to understand, but I don't want to feel left out because I now like TV On The Radio since they made an enjoyable album with catchy, propulsive songs. Also, they look great. If I feel like hurting myself I promised my counselor I would listen to hard music such as Henry Cow or Morton Feldman instead. BTW, xp the Animal Collective reference, I am one of those people who is completely baffled by the attention that Animal Collective album received, I find it deeply unpleasant and my fantasy is that they would be locked in a room with Tori Amos and Joan Wasser until they make an album that sounds like Rumours.
