DJ Martian, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not looking forward to any of them= i don't want to read yr massive list.

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There must be something, Julio. Later this week i will do A-Z selective list of albums that I am looking forward to, with brief comments.

DJ Martian, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I probably won't read that either.

J Blount, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i <3 dean martian!!

mark s, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how can xgau keep in touch with the future when you have not graded those releases yet?

mark s, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blur supposedly has a new album coming out sometime in the next year, right? That's the only one I'm looking forward to at the moment. (Assuming it sounds more like 13 and less like Music is my Radar.)

The Source Experience - Helium
Is that the same Helium who released Magic City? That was released so long ago, I thought they'd broken up.

lyra in seattle, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

martian: are all these alb composed?

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Source Experience - Helium (Fleebite Records), no this is Robert Leiner from Sweden. In 1994 Robert released an album Visions of the Past on Apollo/ R & S offshoot label that is one of the finest electronic albums of the 90s.

DJ Martian, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Interpol album, Sugababes and Metro Area.

JC, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robert Leiner is also due to release a new ambient album in 2002, Robert Leiner "Music for Unaverage People".

DJ Martian, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, thanks for the clarification.

lyra in seattle, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aislers set, rocketship(getting to be like mbv these days although he did have a new song on the cookbook cd), of montreal, harper lee, june brides reissue, beaumont, the solo records from the fantastic something guys, his name is alive(if they find a label), baxendale, other tired, wimpy and unfashionable pop. oh and tender trap too.

keith, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Truly interested in Crimso's Nuovo Metal. Sounds like quite a stupid title to me. I just hope it's sumptin worth listening to. Thrak und Construction of Light were really lame. A new Fripp release hasn't been very worthy of repeated listening since The First Day with Sylvian. When he creates music under the KC banner, it's as though he automatically turns into an egghead who panders to those who would rather count mathematical exercises instead of listening to quality music. I always have expected more from such a talented musician, but such disappointment should not be a surprise when one dares to listen to musicians who veer a little too close to the "prog-rock" edge. Get Groovin' Mr Fripp!

gilby, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are the highlights yours?

the mr lif, the tim hecker, the tangerine dream anthology and the portishead all caught my eye in my very brief scan over this list.

marek, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

portishead... probably others...

Stuart, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Laika - Lost In Space ["best of" anthology] (Too Pure)

From all of their two albums?

New Bright Eyes soon. Emolicious!

bnw, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Love the list, as always. What does Kraftwerk have due in 2002?!

Mark, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thrak is groovin'!!!

I'm looking forward to the new Common, Talib Kweli (thought it's not in THE LIST), Roots (especially), maybe that DJ Spooky.

Jordan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Love the list, as always. What does Kraftwerk have due in 2002?!
They want to replicate the sound of the past, not the Autobahn.

I am merely interested in Dead Man Ray, Massive Attack, Rapture, Playgroup/DJ Kicks and oh maybe Portishead. There's tons more but I can't be arsed to read your list because it doesn't have any breaks.

nathalie, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

::The The - London Town 1983 - 1993 ::
Matts Johnson always brings it on with the cool songs and music, man I wish I knew what this is a record of.

Karl J Kretzschmar, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Laika have four albums don't they?

I'm hanging for the Snowblind album. I'm quite curious about the new Puressence album too - I thought they must have split. Bearsuit's album interests me a fair bit too.

I'd love to hear a full-lengther from Southall Riot and Tuna.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-b-BARK PSYCHOSIS?!?!

Clarke B., Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Laika have four albums don't they?

I plum forgot the one released last year, which I think makes three. Oh well, "best of" albums still annoy me. They should be reserved for bands with massive back catalogues.

bnw, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Karl

Re: The The

Judging from the sleeve notes to the recent 45Rpm compilation, I would imagine that London 1983-1993 will contain the remastered Soulming, Infected, Mind Bomb and Dusk albums - all in shitty new sleeves that make up a rather unappealing photo of Matt's mug.

To answer the question, I am currently looking forward to the new albums by Barry Adamson, No Man and... SUEDE!!!

Zanny Gognet, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Something I didn't see on your list is the new Dalek album coming out on the Ipecac label in August or September. That should be an interesting listen for all the independent-ish hip hop fans out there.

Todd Burns, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

None of that lot, Martian, and especially not the ones in bold. (All right, maybe one or two of the records referred to in the last batch look intriguing.) Even As We Speak and Stereolab both have Peel Sessions LPs due out, maybe this year. Looking forward to those.

Jeff W, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing really springs to mind. I don't really look out for new releases anymore. I like just browsing aroud in the record shop these days.

jel --, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rodney P's LP. It's not on the list = the list is no use. Heh.

Tim, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that Niblock alb finally coming out on Moikai? Abt bleedin' time.

Andrew L, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DHG/ Dodheimsgard I'm pretty interested in what they will come up with next. I fear it's even more industrial that the last one, but still...

LFO (Warp)Hooray!

Katatonia (Peaceville)Hopefully better than the last one...

Katakylsm - Shadows and Dust (Nuclear Blast)
Ladytron - Light and Magic(!!!!)

JoB, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apart from the Bark Psychosis mirage, the two forthcoming albums I want to hear more than anything else in the world are the alleged releases by Luomo and Horsepower Productions. Although I'll be interested to hear the Puressence release too.

Tim, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Subliminal Sessions 3 Mixed by Erick Morillo-Subliminal Records is fucking fantastic and anything I've heard from them has been great. Harry Choo Choo Romero is the American Jon Carter and the best find of the year for me anyway.

Underworld obv. new single is very good indeed.

Jon Carter's own album, his mixes are always great, he's brilliant live, Everlasting Life was a really super track, even if it didn't get played much.

Darren Emerson and Tim Deluxe have a mix album coming out on Underwater, I'm not sure if that's on this list Martian?

Freq Nasty's album also is tempting, aswell as Meat Katie's thing. Have I missed any other things? Are Stanton Warriors or Plump DJs due a release this year?

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave225, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim, I read somewhere the Luomo album has been delayed to 2003. Ofcourse there is a new Luomo single this month.

DJ Martian, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

have just been skipsearching your list and saw: The Fire Theft. do you know how 'certain' that release is? belongs to my high expectations-list...

willem, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Keep a check on the fire theft news not been updated for several months.

I'm looking forward to hearing local (Philadelphia area) Cuban pianist Elio Villafranca's first CD (which is supposed to include Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnett). I don't exactly expect to like it, but I'm interested in hearing what he comes up with as a debut. In addition to being trained as a classical pianist, and having a lot of additional jazz training, he has a solid grounding as a percussionist. I haven't always liked his compositions or his selection of what to perform, but I love to watch him play. I'm not that familiar with Latin jazz pianists, but he seems to have a very individual style.

DeRayMi, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thanx, martian. have been checking that every week for the 6 mo. or so, but nothing much happening lately. hence my former question.

willem, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aborym could be...interesting. sort of the poor man's thorns. none of you know what i'm talking about. mwah!

your null fame, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't there an aimee mann album coming out soon? i am looking forward to that. that it is not on your list dj proves that your list is only seemingly exhaustive and i won't go through it neither.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am looking forward to new records by Low and Blonde Redhead. Are they on the list?

Martian, of the 333 best records of 2002 on your site, which are your favortite five or six?

dan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm definitely looking forward to the new Boredoms (or is it "Voooredoms!!!"?) CD coming out later this summer. If it's as good as the shows they put on in California last March were supposed to be, it should be absolutely mind-blowing.

I've heard great things about the Dalek CD as well. The usual "future of hip-hop" and "this will be the Loveless of hip-hop" comments. Intriguing...

Diego Hadis, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

None of them. But: Saint Etienne's 'Finistere' will be released September 9 2002. Yay!

I don't know if the new Aborym is really something worth looking forward to. "Kali Yuga Bizarre" was already quite patchy, and they only got worse. Thorns is pretty worthless, I rate Aborym much higher BTW. If this weren't the guy that once recorded "Grymyrk" and "Trøndertun", nobody would've payed attention to his recent work anyway...

Bark Psychosis - DustSucker (Parlophone?)

Okay anyone want to make a bet:

Who will release an album first

1. Bark Psychosis

2. My Bloody Valntine/Kevin Shileds Solo Album

3. Meatloaf

1 million on Mr Loaf

brg30, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

John Squire is releasing his solo album later this year!!!

Craig, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really look out for new releases anymore. I like just browsing aroud in the record shop these days.

That's usually what I do as well. Most of the time I have no idea what is out anymore. It's occaisonally nice to be surprised -- like today finding out that the Pixies Purple Tape is out on cd!

Still, it does sound like there should be some interesting stuff coming out, but I've been so disappointed by things I was expecting to be great in the past year or so though I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Nicole, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I read some of your list, but not the whole thing...WOW! That was pretty long!

The albums I'm most looking forward to:

Toby Keith (DreamWorks Records) -- UNLEASHED (July 23rd, 2002) Dixie Chicks (created new/own label, forgot the name) -- ??? (August?) Billy Gilman...as soon as he gets over his voice change, though I've heard rumors he recorded extra stuff ahead of time "just in case". While I love his album and he is a fantastic singer and interpreter like George Strait, Gary Allan or Collin Raye, it's more pop-country and they've had to try real hard to get the correct mixture of songs to showcase his voice, keep him enjoyable for little kids, and have songs adults would love. I MUCH looked forward to this time, because he will change somewhat anyway, and now he has the fame and the respect and has "made his mark" and should be able to have more say with the label and record more REAL country, which he loves and I've seen him do live. However, the BEST way to know what he can do and how wonderfully this KID can interpret a song is to get his Christmas album "Classic Christmas"---the whole album speaks for itself!!! He's also a wonderful little guy and hasn't got the "star attitude"...I've met him several times, and it seems if stardom has brought any changes at all, it's just made him more outgoing and confident. Yet he's always himself and caring about other people. It was great to be at his videotaping for "My Girl" and overhear the conversations his freinds and family were having...a once-in-a- lifetime experience!

talkaboutmetoo, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm looking forward to the new crop of LTM releases

Minny Pops - Sparks in A Dark Room

Minny Pops - Secret Stories

Miaow - not yet titled

Cath Carroll - England Made Me + extra tracks

There's also a new Cath Carroll studio album (The Gondoliers Of Ghost Lake)coming.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

to the people who said they were looking forward to QOTSA's "Songs for the Deaf"...

I've heard most of it courtesy of SoulSeek. I've not really decided yet how much I like it, but I'm certain it's a fair amount better than "R". Bonus points for the fake radio "segues".

As for me...

Massive Attack Portishead - Potentiam (yess!) The Mars Volta - Marumari (so far I prefer them over Sparta) Beck (supposed to be along the lines of "Mutations") Deftones - Lovers Team Sleep Pearl Jam (not listed) Godspeed You Black Emperor! Radiohead (not confirmed, but senor yorke said 'sooner than you think', so who knows...) Whatever that second Flaming Lips release is supposed to be And I'm curious about UNKLE and Jane's Addiction

Simon H., Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[ahem.. Simon, Potentiam is an Icelandic black metal band ! not the title of Portishead's forthcoming album.]

Flaming Lips - YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS is next week, Londoners/web listeners/sky 864 audio-ers can here the full album playback tonight on Xfm - John Kennedy's show. not my thang, from the tracks i have heard - suffers from orchestral soup production with funny vocal style ala Mercury Rev.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Delgados new album comes out in October. That'll suit me just fine...

Mr Swygart, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dang, 'potentiam' sounded like such a 'portishead title' too...oh well.

I, too, look forward to the delgados.

Simon H., Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gathering - Black Light District (Psychonaut Records)

is this anything to do with Coil?

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nope The Gathering are an atmospheric psychedelic epic rock band from the Netherlands, they started out many years ago as a doom dark metal band. In fact

The Gathering

they released an album that came out in the late 90s How to Measure a Planet? - is one of my personal faves from the decade, described by one critic at the time as a sound fusion of the Cocteau Twins, Rush and Massive Attack.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

talkaboutmetoo - thanx for tha Billy Gilman behind-the-scenes peek. you rock!!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a new salako album would be nice.

keith, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Salako? really?

Hasn't Jeepster popped its clogs anyway?

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

really looking forward to (forgive me if some of these are recently out)...

Icarus, Misfits Pieter K ... possible? DJ /Rupture, Minesweeper Suite Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles.. RJD2, Dead Ringer Underworld, A Hundred Days Off Mr. Lif, I Phantom Cage, Movies for the Blind

Ryan, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Barry Adamson is the top of my list right now, but I'm intrigued by new Kraftwerk, Robert Smith and a few more. I'll get the new GYBE and Sigur Ros but I'm not expecting much.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is at least one album of the list I am looking forward to: Montgolfier Brothers "The World Is Flat". "17 Stars" was divine and the new one shouldn't fall short according to what someone on ILM said. Actually the new Massive Attack could be interesting too. And didn't New Order announce a new real album for the near future?

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New Order - new album due next year. However there was talk of doing a New Order "back to mine" style compilation ala what Orbital have done recently. I have already started a 2003 list on my website, I expect as per usual many albums due in the Autumn - will be delayed to the following year.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

popped its clogs? i know salako has split into two factions. they are the perfect complement to fonda 500, charming hippie pop, much nicer than the beta band.

i see omnibus is brave enough to put a rocketship split lp with trace on their release schedule, it may actually happen!

keith, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New Squarepusher in September?!

How credible is this information?

lou, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sleater-Kinney, of course.

Justyn Dillingham, Saturday, 20 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Squarepusher I read about in a magazine, can't remember which, but here is the confirmation from the Amazon shop in Japan Amazon.co.jp

[tip - cancel the language pop up box, to view some parts in english].
