This is a pretty amazing album. Kind of like fragile folk-pop gone wibbling psychedelic.

I like the way some of their songs are so repetitive and underwritten. the girls had a knack for the mantra-like repitition of a short phrase or song title. "Children Laughing" and "The Winter is Cold" are basically extended codas, and they make a nice contrast to the complex, tightly-controlled pop songs that dominate the first side of the album. on the live track "Thinking, Waiting" (from the 2CD edition), it's like they took all the hooks from all the songs they never got to record and compressed them into the space of 3-½ minutes without fussing too much with lyrics.

Wendy's collaboration with Broadcast is amazing! too bad they only recorded one song together.

Bonnie lived and performed for years as a solo and session singer, guitarist, drummer, and Latin Jazz percussionist. In the early 1980s, an emerging girl group saw Bonnie performing at a club and relayed an invitation to join. "They described what they were doing as a sort of 'girl group bubblegum.' At the time, I was immersed in jazz and Brazilian rhythms and felt I was in music heaven, so I declined the offer. That group evolved into the Bangles."
