Remember to vote in Best 70s FUNK Album

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:08 (sixteen years ago)

49 Red Hot Chili Peppers Freaky Styley (1985)

ewww the 80s.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

Bizarre that Hotter Than July qualifies as a funk album but not Innervisions.

cough syrup in coke cans (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

What's the point in this poll, we all know Prince is going to win it *JOKE*

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

"Zapp" and "Computer Games" are prob'ly my fave non-Prince

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

I was kinda pondering which 80s Prince albums would qualify as "funk", and the one on this list are exactly the ones I thought about. So for once RYM got something right.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

I like Zapp II more than the first Zapp album, too bad II isn't on the list.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

Dirty Mind. I didn't even bother reading the rest.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

Before I actually get around to listening to half the list, my initial thought is to vote ESG.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

I like Zapp II more than the first Zapp album, too bad II isn't on the list.

Inclined to agree with you there

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

What Time Is It? ought to win this; I'll take Morris' funky Prince over the songwriter's funky stylings any day. Though Prince is better than Morris at non-funk.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

That Jill Jones album is awesome too, probably the best non-Prince Paisley Park record. Too bad it's very hard to find a physical copy of it these days.

And Raise! is my favourite EWF album. Looks like it isn't so obvious after all that I'd vote for Prince.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 October 2009 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

Dirty Mind. I didn't even bother reading the rest.

― kornrulez6969,

See Tom D? SEE?!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

LOL, I still don't see what the problem is

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

Dirty Mind & Controversy are my favourite Prince albums , but People will just vote Prince blindly, whereas in the other poll people were checking out other albums before voting (mind you I bet Sly & The Family Stone get shitloads of albums i know votes)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

I'll bet most people weren't checking out other albums

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, it is basically a place for me to troll.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

btw sam, George Clinton produced Freaky Styley and RHCP back then are far removed from the travesty they are now. RHCP also toured with Parliament/Funkadelic.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

ok but still

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

Slave - Show Time

Andy K, Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

Actually I don't know -- maybe Slave weren't as funky as A Certain Ratio.

Andy K, Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

Shriekback! At 14! "The Shining Path" will get a party started, alright.

Andy K, Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

there must be other funk albums missing from this list no?

jill jones isnt funk!

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

no slave? list needs more zapp albums too.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

Well there was no Bootsy albums in the 70s poll, after all

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

there was one.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

when Prince is an option in the poll you cant vote for anything else. Dirty Mind, easy.

The Girl In Da Corner (Minnie The Minx), Thursday, 29 October 2009 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhouse_(band)

Still going with The Black Album, though.

(nutty nuggets at HEB) (Eazy), Thursday, 29 October 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

no cameo - alligator woman? fuck this...Dirty Mind.

DustyLoops, Friday, 30 October 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

and I'm sorry I've tried time and time again but Trombipulation is the juice the accumulates at the bottom of a trash bin.

DustyLoops, Friday, 30 October 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

bump

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 November 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

"Dirty Mind, easy."

def not his funkiest album. the times first album is a better funk album.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 2 November 2009 12:36 (sixteen years ago)

i doubt many of the prince fans are voting prince because he has the funkiest album somehow, not even in an 80s funk poll. If prince was in a best heavy metal poll they would still vote "purple rain" when it obviously isn't heavy metal.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

Pointer Sisters' Break Out isn't the most funky of funk, but as a fantastic electrofunk album, it needs serious consideration.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

but they have prince to vote for!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Herman, you should give Prince fans some credit, I think you're comments are a bit insulting. I'm a Prince fan, and not all of us are drooling sycophants who vote for him whenever he's in any poll. If this had been a "Best of Funk Album of All Time", I wouldn't have voted for him, as I think several 70s funk albums better exemplify funk than Prince. However, in an 80s only poll, it's pretty hard to argue that "Controversy" and "1999" aren't among the funkiest albums of that decade. Still, even in this poll it's not like I immediately went for Prince without checking what else is in the poll. If anything, I probably would've automatically voted for Zapp II if it had been on the list.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 November 2009 07:31 (sixteen years ago)

i doubt many of the prince fans are voting prince because he has the funkiest album somehow, not even in an 80s funk poll. If prince was in a best heavy metal poll they would still vote "purple rain" when it obviously isn't heavy metal.

However, this poll isn't called "The funkiest 80s album", it's "The best 80s funk album". And it would be pretty silly to say something like "Controversy" isn't a funk album. Okay, it has a couple of tracks that are not strictly funk, but so does "Maggot Brain", and many other albums on the 70s list. Even The Meters have non-funk tunes on their records.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 November 2009 07:36 (sixteen years ago)

There's not much funk on "Maggot Brain" at all

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 November 2009 09:48 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I was kinda disappointed when I first heard it, because all the sources said that this is the Funkadelic album to get. So I buy it, put in on my stereo, and it starts with a long-ass instrumental guitar solo that sounds more like John McLaughlin or Santana than funk. I guess it's fine as an electric guitar solo, but they're not really my thing, and I didn't expect to hear this sort of endless noodling on a funk album. Then there are some short, interchangeable group jams which are okay I think, but they sound pretty underdeveloped as songs, like something that was cut off of a Sly Stone album. And then there's another long instrumental tune, but that one at least is funky and has some funny sound effects, so the album at leasn't doesn't leave a sour taste to my mouth. But still, this is supposed to be the best funk album of the 70s (according to the other poll)?!

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 November 2009 10:04 (sixteen years ago)

So yeah, compared to that "Controversy" is at least 6.5 times funkier.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 November 2009 10:05 (sixteen years ago)

maggot brain isnt really a funk album, though it is kinda funky. and that goes for pretty much all the early westbound funkadelic albums. free your mind is the funkiest. the reason maggot gets voted for in so many polls is cos it allows people like mojo critics to tokenistically include funkadelic but without actually including their funkiest work (which for my money would be the one nation album). the guitar hero stuff makes it easier for them to give it a thumbs up. not seen the other poll results yet.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 5 November 2009 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

The likes of mojo actually usually include One Nation as the token funkadelic album fyi.
btw tuomas im a prince fan.
also if you find comments about prince fans insulting, its not anymore insulting than your usual comments about rock and indie and so forth.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 12:40 (sixteen years ago)

Errrrrrr, but don't you find it a tad ironic that you were all, "Oh noes, non-funk fans are just going to vote for Prince in this poll", only for a busload of rock fans to show up on your 70s funk poll and vote "Maggot Brain"?

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 November 2009 12:47 (sixteen years ago)

that's life i guess. but that poll didn't have anyone posting "maggot brain easy im not going to bother looking at the rest of the poll" comments. Even if the results probably end up the same.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

I think that says more about the overall strength of 70s funk as opposed to 80s funk, tbh

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 November 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

anyway that poll had albums that got lots of votes, will be interested to see if that happens here.
I think I might give that Material album a vote as i love it and chances are noone else will. then again zapp and cameo deserve votes too. Love the ulmer albums but i dont think i'll vote for them.
I was disappointed by The Time albums when i heard them years ago, i think it's "time" i gave them another listen.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 12:56 (sixteen years ago)

I think that says more about the overall strength of 70s funk as opposed to 80s funk, tbh

aye 70s definitely stronger, no arguments there.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 12:56 (sixteen years ago)

also if you find comments about prince fans insulting, its not anymore insulting than your usual comments about rock and indie and so forth.

But I've never said I think rock fans are dumb and always vote for Metallica in any poll they appear in. I've only said that I don't like/understand rock music, that's quite different from assuming how fans of a certain artist supposedly behave. I think it's perfectly okay to criticize certain types of music, but making strawman arguments about the listeners of that music is kinda condescending.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

But I've never said I think rock fans are dumb

And I've never said "Prince fans are dumb". So what is your point?
Please point me to where I supposedly said that.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

Very fond of Chic, EWF, Funkadelic, In Our Lifetime (still the most underrated Gaye album), Pointer Sisters (girly electro-funk better than Mary Jane Girls or whoever),

I yanked that sucker hard, and work it did. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

Pfunkboy, you do have a habit of always assuming that everyone else will act as predictably as yourself.

swagless price (The Reverend), Friday, 6 November 2009 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

alfred otm on basically every count, though I Want You may be about as underrated

cough syrup in coke cans (Eric H.), Friday, 6 November 2009 05:39 (sixteen years ago)

Damn, I didn't even see In Our Lifetime, I might have voted for that

swagless price (The Reverend), Friday, 6 November 2009 09:59 (sixteen years ago)

Rodney, I don't know what you're on about. Tuomas accused me of calling prince fans "dumb" and I'm asking him to show me where I said that. Otherwise he should retract it if he cant.

One of these:

Prince Controversy (1981)
Stevie Wonder Hotter Than July (1980)
Marvin Gaye In Our Lifetime (1981)
Funkadelic The Electric Spanking of War Babies (1981)
Zapp Zapp (1980)
P-Funk All Stars Urban Dancefloor Guerillas (1983)
Change Miracles (1981) <--- "Paradise"!!
The Pointer Sisters Break Out (1983)
Earth, Wind & Fire Raise! (1981)

cough syrup in coke cans (Eric H.), Monday, 9 November 2009 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

Leaning toward Pointer Sisters because "Baby Come And Get It" is really heated and funkous.

Can I vote for Maggot Brain on this poll to counterbalance some of the nasty things being said about it, as well as silly assumptions about people who enjoy it?

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:12 (sixteen years ago)

not surprised at the top 2 but i suppose its no surprise the other albums only got 1-3 votes each either.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

I voted Rick James after a brief examination of the list. Surprised it didn't do so well, but I guess you can't argue with Prince.

Neil S, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 13:19 (sixteen years ago)

I'm surprised that Controversy won! Definitely not disappointed, because it is Prince's funkiest album IMO, but usually people tend to rate Dirty Mind above it (I don't).

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

really? i don't think it's that funky aside from the title track & 'let's work', dirty mind has way more jams.

btw i would have had to seriously consider voting for 'cameosis' if it was on there.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm. Guess it's time to get Dirty Mind. (This poll made me dig out Controversy).

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

controversy is my fave prince album actually.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Never got the affection for Computer Games. The next year's You Shouldn't-Nuf Bit Fish is the real comeback.
