No thread on this yet? That show was just a block from where I live, but tickets sold out by the time I tried to get 'em online. Here's reviews of that performance:

Album out November 17th.

Last I checked, there were only leaks of live performances. Anyone heard it yet? Song by song review: http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=140&title=title_349&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

NME seems to dismiss it for not having enough "hummable" Foo Fighters bits. Their least favorite song sounds like it'll be my favorite:

"Seven and a half minutes of impenetrable riffing. You'll skip this one."

Sounds awesome to me!

It's all very well, but why have so many Kyuss spin off projects if they're all gonna sound like various plotpoints between sounding like Kyuss and sounding like QOTSA?

dog latin, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

Uh, I don't think you can really call it a Kyuss spin-off at this point.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

I know, I can't believe it's been 11 years since the first QOTSA album! So anyone heard the album yet?

Listening to the album now. Not really feeling it. Homme's been coasting since Kyuss broke up, and most of the songs on here are lazy one-riff slogs. With a better drummer, Jones could have really added a ferocious groove, but Grohl is a club-footed caveman behind the kit (and not in a good way), so that possibility goes out the window. The low quality of the actual music won't stop the fellatio-fest in what's left of the "rock press," though.

man even if you don't like qotsa/eodm, "coasting" doesn't seem like the word for it.

listened to this on luisterpaal today, it's got some great moments and sounds but none of the songs cohere into anything solid. still a fun listen.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 November 2009 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

i wasnt enthralled after 1 listen but 3 or 4 songs sounded like they might be worth playing again.

I heard the album through crappy individual streams on crappy work computer speakers last week and it didn't click. Will get the CD and hopefully it'll sound better on the twin bulbous Opus towers.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

I would say Groh is a club-footed caveman in a good way. I could understand how one might crave something different, but it's just not what Homme is after. If you miss Kyuss and wondered what they'd sound like going in another direction, you might like the last few Colour Haze albums.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

earlier colour haze albums you mean

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

No, those are okay, but too derivative for my tastes. I'm saying the later ones delve in territory that one could imagine Kyuss COULD have gone in, not already pioneered.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

fair enough. I just meant colour haze moved away from kyuss worship on the last album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

On my first listen now, really liking this. Course I'm pretty much a sucker for Homme at this point. The second half of "Warsaw..." is killing me right now.

if you like having your FACE ROCKED OFF even the teensiest bit you owe it to yourself to see these guys live. fucking killer, and it's a hoot and a holler just to watch JPJ having himself a ball.

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Friday, 20 November 2009 08:16 (fifteen years ago)

was @ a party tonite and some kids (like 19) arrived late and announced that they had just seen them crooked vultures. one said it was the best thing he'd ever seen in his life, his eyes glazed with an almost incomprehensible wonder. "and then he busted out a keytar"

contenderizer, Sunday, 22 November 2009 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

"New Fang" sounded like a bore when I first heard it, but it turned into something awesome around the 3rd or 4th listen.. I'm expecting to enjoy the rest of the album in the same way.

billstevejim, Sunday, 22 November 2009 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

they f'n rocked it. everything roger said and then some. just got back from flying into Seattle for the show at the Paramount. face-melting. wormed my way up to about ten rows back from JPJ. It made up for the sting of not getting tix to their Chicago show. and yes, JP looks like he is having an absolute blast doing this right now. so cool. I was drinking at the Virginia Inn on Friday night after I got into town and later on Josh came in there for a while (i guess he had sat in with some band at the Moore earlier....) I didn't bug him tho.

anyway, super show, super trip

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 05:27 (fifteen years ago)

cruddy blurry shot of John Paul motherfucking Jones ... much as I hate the trend of holding up phones and cameras during shows (some jagbag near me had his up the whole time ... watching the show through his VIEWFINDER instead of looking at the stage), I just had to snap a pic of JPJ .. but Blackberry's curve cam is pretty sad

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 05:31 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah and Grohl's head is the white blob in the bottom-right

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 05:31 (fifteen years ago)

really glad you went. really glad you dug. JPJ is the new brett favre! having so much fun! like a kid out there! etc etc and oh yes btw melting faces WITH KEYTAR.

when he does his little piano bit at the end of "spinning inn daffodils" everyone in the crowd is like "awwwww"

I just drove down from SF to LA today blasting this and the record gets better and better every time through. Love the Zep and Cream and Queens moments but it's all beside the point, which is 75 minutes of pummeling riff rock.

oh look JPJ brings you BASS FROM FUTURE

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 23 November 2009 05:52 (fifteen years ago)

the funniest thing about the trip is that I actually had not listened to any of the record other than "New Fang", cuz I kinda wanted to be surprised and feel what it have been like had I made into that Chicago show back in August. So then I decide to go record shopping Saturday afternoon and i hit Silver Platters in Queen Anne and JUST as I walk in the door they drop the needle on the record instore. So i end up hearing the whole thing while I buy mint copies of Savoy Brown's 'Raw Sienna' and the 2nd Hello People album.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:20 (fifteen years ago)

the keytar was awesome, btw, it's just a jokey song. who the fuck is "contenderizer" anyway? to the NB i guess..

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:22 (fifteen years ago)

it's me. what's up?

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 23 November 2009 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

who are you? who name did you used to use? just so I can contextualize a dude that would come on a thread and hate on some 19 year olds that had a good time at a great rock show, that's all

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:25 (fifteen years ago)

fwiw I heard an implied "and this was awesome" at the end of that story. no hate.

JPJ also melted face with MANDOLIN tbh

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 23 November 2009 06:26 (fifteen years ago)

ah, you might be otm Roger, if so I apologize contender! there's has been so much knee-jerk hate over this group, i dunno

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:30 (fifteen years ago)

much more than the mandolin tho, roger, what was up with that SIX STRING bass? lol

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

and yeah the piano bit was beautiful but somewhat ruined by everybody going "yeeeaaAAAHHHH!!!" before he had even finished ... kind of overwhelming the sound when what he was playing was actually quite beautiful

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:32 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ the oakland crowd being more polite and restrained

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 23 November 2009 06:37 (fifteen years ago)

and yeah the thing is this is in no way a "supergroup" - this is just a flat out killer act and the record is, um, really good.

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 23 November 2009 06:38 (fifteen years ago)

peace stormy, no sneer intended, tho i can see how one might have come across. i mean, i was kinda weirded out by their enthusiasm being a jaded old fuck and all, but in a good way. made me want to be totally drop-kicked through the goalposts of life by a band.

oh wait - baroness!

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 23 November 2009 06:41 (fifteen years ago)

really? that's funny about Oaktown, yeah the Seattlites were pretty drunk and loud

actually, other thing i noted about the show was there was such an amazing buzz in the air afterwards. no encore, after that long jam during "warsaw", then the curtain comes down, Roy Orbison's "It's Over" plays, and everyone has a smile on their face ... total loud whooping and hollering and high-fiving. Normally after even a GREAT band, there is just sort of that post-show murmur as everyone files out after the encore. with occasional yells and so-forth. But with the lack of encore i think everyone was just so fired up and happy, such an electric atmosphere walking out of the theater...

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:41 (fifteen years ago)

xp -- contender, are you a Seattlite?

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:42 (fifteen years ago)

after the kids & you guys, i'm gently kicking myself in my own ass for skipping this show - sounds fantastic. record hasn't grabbed me yet.

and i've been posting as contenderizer for quite some time, tho in an on-again/off-again adjunct capacity

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 23 November 2009 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

oh and yeah i'm a seattle person. belltown, baby!

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 23 November 2009 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

nice, I stayed at the Moore. spent the morning Saturday walking through Belltown. Olympic Sculpture park (fucking incredible), then up to Queen Anne.

went to the King Khan and BBQ show at Chop Suey after the Vultures show ... they were pretty great too! but left a little early, then went to Hopvine. drank Boundary Bays, ran into K1m Thay1l there, lol.

pretty much the perfect weekend

although it rained the entire weekend, but that doesn't bother me, i love rain

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:53 (fifteen years ago)

of course, the youtubes are already up ...

Stormy Davis, Monday, 23 November 2009 06:55 (fifteen years ago)

FUCK i totally spaced on king khan & bbq. fuck fuck fuckity crumbs! was planning on doing that and everything, then got sidetracked by a party out in the northend boonies and forgot all about everything. gah. guess it's just as well that i saved a few bucks (he told himself bitterly)

and yeah the sculpture garden is a great thing to have at yr doorstep. good for wandering on a sunny day, esp up past the north end where it trails off into beaches etc. and the richard serra is spectacular.

was a good weekend for rain yeah.

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 23 November 2009 07:14 (fifteen years ago)

oh btw this record is really really good. 75 minutes of bludgeoning riff rock that gets better every time and is somehow even better for not taking itself too seriously.

Their Austin City Limits performance aired a week or so ago, and I finally watched it tonight on the DVR with the headphones on. Nice! http://video.pbs.org/video/1397479116/

oh wow, tanks for that, Fastnbulbous, Austin City Limits is a normal staple of my Friday nights (as well as Bill Moyers) but my DirectTV box has been fried so I haven't been watching TV for the last couple months ... Thanks for that link!!
