Mitch Ryder, narrowly from the Chi-Lites. Sure Little Latin Lupe Lou isn't the best song here, but can't help but want to rep for Mitch.

Impossible! Any one of these:

He Stopped Lovin' Her Today
I Wish It Would Rain
Edge of Seventeen
Have You Seen Her

lihaperäpukamat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

Voting "Peppermint Twist." A close call; gets the edge because I'm actually surprised to see it here, for some reason.

Next six, more or less this order:
Shirley and Co, Chi-Lites, Dudley, Ryder, Spinners, Gladys.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

"Ain't Too Proud To Beg" over "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)".

Euler, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

Some great choices here: 2 Temps, Elvis, Jackie, EWF, Chi-Lites, Five Satins, Dave Dudley, Joey Dee, Gladys, Spinners, Solomon, Nicks and the wild Shirley & Co. But this belongs to George Jones.

jetfan, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

Beg over Little Sister.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeesh, I misread that as "Bend over little sister" for a split-second!

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

Great selection up there, but "Shame Shame Shame" up there with "Rock Your Baby" and "I Feel Love" as a track I'll happily play a half-dozen times running, one of the great K-Tel smashes of all time, unstoppable and untoppable.

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

"Have You Seen Her" is such a perfect song.

How is the band's name pronounced? My friend says it "shy lights."

Pretty good group, but one of the easiest choices yet for me: "The Mountain's High," which sat somewhere on Billboard's Top 100 the week I was born. I'll be surprised if it gets a second vote, but one of my favorite songs ever. Some runners-up: "I Wish It Would Rain", Marvin Gaye (I'm sick of a lot of great Motown hits, but not those two), Blue Jays, and Joey Dee. And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to return to thoughts of how much Carly Simon loved having sex.

Shirley and Co. for me.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

James Brown - Night Train, over george jones and mitch ryder. marsh really liked putting two versions of the same song next to each other, eh?

damn, it's a total toss up between marvin gaye and the five satins. five satins win because of the sax solo.

1956 Five Satins In the still of the night
1965 Marvin Gaye Ain't that peculiar
1966 Sam and Dave You don't know like I know
1975 Shirley and Company Shame shame shame
1966 Temptations Ain't too proud to beg
1968 Temptations I wish it would rain
1952 Jimmy Forrest Night train
1956 Drifters Your promise to be mine
1980 George Jones He stopped lovin' her today
1971 Chi-lites Have you seen her

those backing vocals! shoo-dooit-shooby-do...

amateurist, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

that sax solo is basically the sourcepoint for the first julee cruise album, people.

amateurist, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Totally missed "Your Promise to Be Mine"--not as well known as the early-'60s hits, but one of the Drifters' greatest. I think it's still Clyde McPhatter singing, but I'm not sure.

clemenza, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

I'm still listening my way through these. These polls have been a great source for YouTube searches.

o. nate, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

The YouTube video of this is pretty great: Joey Dee and the Starlighters Peppermint twist

o. nate, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

When I was in high school, the theater group I did performed a play in which an intrepid explorer is stranded on an island that worships the Temptations. We learned an elaborate bit of choreography for Ain't To Proud To Beg, which looks enough like real dancing that sometimes I break it out at parties (oh, box step, what can't you do?). The guy who wrote that play grew up to write for Lost and Charmed.

word.

the not-fun one (Ioannis), Saturday, 7 November 2009 09:34 (fifteen years ago)

'Edge of Seventeen'. I'd never heard it before, but there was a Fleetwood Mac evening on BBC4 last night and this was on. I did not know it was the root of 'Bootylicious' either. I was loving it.

the not-fun one (Ioannis), Sunday, 8 November 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

Hmm...well, I THINK I voted, but I do have a history of forgetting! So I'll take the blame, blame, blame.

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Sunday, 8 November 2009 09:47 (fifteen years ago)

Same, same, same: I sometimes forget to actually vote in these things (and I can't recall if I did so here or not).

sw00ds, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe we ALL forgot and two lurkers voted instead?

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for it twice so....
