Was just thinking about what an inauspicious name "Weather Report" is.

There's a band here in Denver called Houses, which always strikes me as dullsville.

band NAMES would help, instead of just posting random pictures of artists that half the people here won't recognise?

Not exactly bland, but band name with food in it = jam rock = avoid.

Bay-L.A. Bar Talk (Hurting 2), Saturday, 7 November 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

I always liked the story (perhaps apocryphal) about how The Cars decided on their name. They had a list of different names that they ran by their friends and The Cars was the one that people hated the most. Better than Milkwood at least...

The Band, The Music, Stereophonics, Hard-Fi, etc. - basically anything that alludes to the fact that you are a band and that you play music. I don't think it's something - as a band - you really have to point out to people

toofattoskate, Saturday, 7 November 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

Normal people names are boring.

James Brown
Ian Brown
Chris Brown
Alex Turner
Bob Mould

The Hold-Steady

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 8 November 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

there's some HC challoping/willful misreading happening on this here thread.

Waterboys is an odd one because we don't have waterboys in the UK afaik so when I was a kid this didn't sound like a banal name.
Midlake? don't think so
Caribou no because they are big angry aminals that can stomp humans to death
Marcy Playground doesn't sound like a bland name cos playgrounds are cool
Third Eye Blind is kind of a we-will-be-a-shit-goth-metal-band name rather than a blando name
Pixies could be bland and cutesy but in the fairy stories i read as a kid pixies tended to be evil little bastards
Not all people's names automatically connote bland and half of stan's list aren't dullsville names afaiac

anyhoo, carry on

The Pastels
The Field Mice

these two definitely...so beige. same with kings of convenience.

there's an estonian pop star who just goes by hannah. you can't really get away with going surnameless if you have a name as bland as hannah.

sugababes is an obvious one here!

hannah isn't a bad name. it's just not really a one-name pop star moniker.

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm just joking altho hannah spearritt was a definite influence on my decision

neither of them go by just "hannah"

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

our hannah has got surprise birthday tickets for hannah montana next month. i agree that it sucks as a single name pop star btw

Death to False Meta (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 8 November 2009 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

true. and as much as i love her, cassie - like, especially when your full name is cassie ventura.

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

again I think cassie sounds kind of alright to britishes ears - it's not a common enough name over here to be banal?

Haha Alex in NYC, I've always had this irrational idea that most bands with numbers in their names will inevitably suck.

Turangalila, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

Front 1 to 241 all sucked, yeah.

Deliquescing (Derelict), Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

I've just recently realized that Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Be Bop Deluxe were pretty weird, camp operations. With those names, I'd long pegged them as by-the-books seventies choogle, along the lines of Rick Derringer or Mountain.
