I read his autobiography and thought he was talking about Patti Smith, and I thought that was strange. I know nothing of Patty Smyth.

In the mid 1980s, Smyth became friends with Valerie Bertinelli and her then husband, Eddie Van Halen. When David Lee Roth left the band Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen invited Smyth to replace Roth as the band's lead singer. Smyth declined the offer

the reception area in the neonatal intensive care unit where both our kids spent some time is named the john and patty mcenroe space or something like that -- there's a plaque with their names on it -- because i guess they gave a big donation after one of their kids was in there. one of the nurses told us patty was incredibly sweet, but "her husband wasn't."

i always thought patty smyth was a decent singer who never had the right band or material, that VH hookup might've been the ticket.
used to see her & richard pushing the stroller around when i lived in the EV. they looked like something of an odd couple.

I knew she was with John MacEnroe but not that she used to be with Richard Hell!
"Goodbye To You" is a great, great song. I think I like it better than anything Patti Smith ever recorded.

Other than Shaun Murphy taking over lead vocals for Little Feat, has any other band replaced a well-known male singer with a woman?

I'm attempting to imagine a late-80s version Van Halen with Smyth's sub-Benatar bleating out front and Richard Hell writing lyrics.
